of a floor grid for the heating system in the Japanese Tower, Brussel (Laken)
The Big Picture (aka My Wallpaper)
The Japanese Tower and the Chinese House are located on the estate of the Belgian Royal Residence. They were erected at the behest of King Leopold II for the occasion of the 1900 World's Fair of Paris. The two buildings are constructed in the monumental styles of their respective countries of origin. The structural work was performed by European architects and builders; the decoration was executed by Japanese and Chinese specialists. They have been open to the public since 1913. In 1946 collections of fine Japanese and Chinese pottery and furniture were added to augment the buildings' architectural and decorative appeal.
The school was built as Wood Green County School in 1912 to the designs of Middlesex County Council architect Harry George Crothall. It is baroque in style, and the double cupola is somethin' else.
The main building at North MIddlesex Hospital is directly behind the double cupola.

The big return ...of the stoves... People are waiting on the line to buy cerosene to heat their houses..
the "forgotten" heating system returns to the forefront, as more and more are saying "goodbye" to the radiators, oil central heating due to their high prices, preferring to use again the stoves.
Our gas furnace exhausts out the side of our home with just enough humidity left to start this stalagmite of ice underneath.
Drop by drop it mounts up as the temperatures remain under freezing, which can be for many weeks. The height can get pretty high if left alone. I may try to measure it prior to the first thaw, which at this point, cannot come soon enough for me.
The light was near sunset and set up a nice inner glow in the ice.
This of the electricians working on our new gas heating system. It's got a sophisticated control system that includes a temperature sensor outside. When it's warm out, the system doesn't burn as many BTUs because it takes less to heat the house. When it's frigid, it'll be "cooking with gas," so to speak.

Modern rail car boiler and heating system. It is a German-built car, if I am not mistaken.

Better Homes did the plumbing to install all of the baseboard for the heating system in Broadalbin, NY
Central heating systems, that standby of the saloon bar bore, are a mystery to me. I have only once lived in a house equipped with central heating, and rarely used it because the two main rooms also benefited from gas fires. Bentos Towers was constructed during the vogue for warm air heating and the original system was still in situ when we moved in. It never worked properly and during last winter conked out altogether, leaving us dependant for warmth upon an electric room heater. Fortunately the boiler continued to provide hot water. Because there is a potential danger of gaseous emissions, plumbers must now be specially qualified to work on warm air systems. The qualification must be obtained, and annually renewed, at the plumber's expense, but since few such systems remain he has little hope of a return. Accordingly few plumbers bother with warm air systems and it is almost impossible to keep them maintained in working order.
So central heating it had to be. I would not care to re-live the week-long process of installation, which resulted in the hospitalisation of two people and a computer disaster, along with the more routine forms of domestic disruption. The last part of the process, completed yesterday, was the removal of the old boiler, dating from the construction of the house in the early 70s. The new one, about the size of a small television set, can be fitted to a wall at eye level. "We'll leave the old one out the front", said the plumber. "With any luck someone'll nick it, but if not I've got a man who comes around and picks them up for me". Not long afterwards, and shortly after the photograph was taken, an uncouth-looking individual, approaching with the furtive, predatory tread of an hyaena, knocked at the front door. "He said there'd be a bit of copper", complained the man, "somebody must've 'ad it away". Well, I didn't remember any copper over and above that contained within the apparatus, and the boiler had only been standing in the front garden for an hour or so. He dragged it down the path, not apologising, I fastidiously noted, for a number of gouges left in neighbouring brickwork and, with a collaborator, belaboured the boiler into the back of a van, leaving that twirly lagging from the flue-pipe strewn across the public grass verge.

NEIL KNIGHTSMITH spotted this property in Nottingham that was having some building work done – with the gas/ boiler installation left intact. Hopefully it was a Warning Notice attached to the boiler, especially considering the unsupported, unprotected gas pipe and
unsupported flue. At least the pipework has some insulation!
MICK LINSKY spotted this rather special flue terminal location in Cleckheaton. Surely anyone could see it wasn’t the cleverest possible positioning?
PIXIE ALLEN of Blackpool’s L.A.P.D Gas sent in these photos of a back boiler found by one of their engineers called to investigate a suspected gas leak.
The unit hadn’t been serviced for a while and it was so blocked solid that this black mass of carbon deposits was hanging off the heat exchange.
DAVID WRIGHT was asked to quote for fitting a new boiler in Chorley for a customer who had just moved house and found the existing, long-serving heating system had started to leak. The boiler was in the loft space, supported on the ceiling joist. The loft hatch wasn’t as big as the boiler, so the installation itself must have been quite an achievement.
