Our only remaining choice is whether we carry on business as usual and face catastrophic societal breakdown, (from sustained food shortages and/or energy outages, for example), or whether we consciously effect an energy descent in parallel with the rapid expansion of local food production. - Rupert Read

A joyous Christmas to you and yours! This is one of my favorite photos of the beautiful Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. As you can see, it was taken before the heartbreaking fire in 2019. I haven’t been back since due to the pandemic, but have a trip planned for next fall. My fingers are crossed….

One of the heartbreaking things about visiting Donna Nook is no matter how often you keep returning to a pup and no mother is there, you do not know (unless you go back the next day) whether he/she will be reunited with his/her mother or not. Many cows fall asleep nearby in a pool of water, keeping an eye on their pup, or they disappear for 6 hours but do return. The absolutely heartrending thing is that not all of them return.

According to the wardens, this is usually because the mother senses something wrong with the pup or some daft eejit goes and touches the pup, or it smells of dog, which guarantees maternal rejection. The more inexperienced the mother, the more likely she will reject the pup if she is concerned.

This little one's mother was nowhere to be seen and despite coming back again and again, we didnt see her. Without food, they die within 3 to 4 days.

Every time we visit, there are always one or two pups who I worry about. Brings a tear to my eye knowing there is nothing that can be done. Good old humans eh?

Quillanelle the Hedgehog photographed at British Wildlife centre, UK.

Heartbreakingly, the wonderful Hedgehog is now vulnerable to extinction in the UK. This is due to people using pesticides and rat poison, a loss of habitat and hedgerow removal and garden injuries from strimmers and burning leaves. For some obscure reason, when rescued, people tend to give them milk which can kill them.

I am definitely feeling the winter blahs - the snow is gone and everything is sodden and soggy outside. Can't listen to the news of the world - I'm feeling surrounded by chaos at home and abroad. Desperately wish that we could somehow share our over abundance of rain with Australia to snuff out those horrendous, heartbreaking fires. Time to daydeam of spring!

the spring would not be so pleasant."

Not what you'd expect to see walking along Cullen Beach, but there he was chirruping away. He kept waddling around and falling in those huge (for him) footprints, then struggled to get out again, all the while calling for mummy. Ordinarily I leave nature to sort itself out, but it was heartbreaking to watch and we couldn't just leave him there all on his own with an incoming tide so intervened and did eventually successfully reunite him with his family.

Yesterday was a horrendous milestone as the death count of Covid-19 victims surpassed 100,000 in the US. Really hard to imagine this grim number as representing individual lives - people like you or me: artists, teachers, scientists, engineers, mothers, daughters, fathers, sons ... who have been lost. Heartbreaking and difficult to comprehend such a large number and climbing. I need to give tribute to them with flowers - I don't know of anything else I can do, knowing that nothing will fill the gaping hole of their loss.

I truly believe everything happens for a reason...

A week ago I had absolutely expected to open the new summer Florence. We were literally days away from it's preview. Unfortunately due to extenuating circumstances it was not meant to be. It's heartbreaking seeing a project not come to fruition and I'm saddened to see its end.

At this point I'm not sure what will happen with Florence~Perhaps in the fall there will be a reopening. Time will tell...

In the meantime, a lesson learnt is that I have wonderful friends on game. I've always known, but this past week in general the support shown and help rebuilding a lovely retreat has been both touching and greatly appreciated.

I'm going to regroup for a few~enjoy Florence as it is at the moment and step back for a little bit. I'm looking ahead, but in the meantime will enjoy the view from my SL deck and let my imagination run wild...

I hope to see you all back at Florence soon.

Mating season is a violent time for Grey seals. Photographed at Donna Nook.

No more heartbreaking images like this. I just wanted to share.

A Robin taken almost this time last year..Even though occasionally digging for worms they are still happy to receive seeds from my pocket and keep close by on a walk - especially in the cold weather. This is actually taken just on the side of a pathway which is what oof grey area is and the Robin kept me company much of the time I walked this pathway.

I am desperately sorry to see all the beautiful birds having to be culled due to Avian flu and the scenes of Swans suffering from it are heartbreaking but I have no idea if it affects the smaller wild birds too ?

The Dark Angel

They flow down her cheeks like a river, and roll off the end of her chin. She gently brushes the tears away with the back of her hand. She looks out into the graveyard that is her home, that is her life. Her head and shoulders bow as if she can no longer hold up the weight of her world any longer.

In the darkness between the trees, sitting on a broken crypt is The Dark Angel. Her once silent tears, have turned to shuddering sobs. The heartbreaking sound fills the darkened mists of the graveyard, and even the creatures of the night are silent, as The Dark Angel cries...

...she cries until there are no more tears left to shed. As the southern breeze brushes her hair, she rises from the crypt and slowly walks through the dead trees, a tiny jar grasped tightly in her small hands. She walks deep into the cemetery, past broken and forgotten headstones, to a lonely mausoleum. She takes the tiny jar, that holds the last piece of her broken heart, and hides it deep inside the small crypt. She slowly peers into the darkness of the night, and satisfied her heart is finally safe, flies away...

DISTANT and poor light, but a real joy to see and capture this beauty in our corner of Kent. AN ATTRACTIVE well-marked species, the turtle dove has the same proportions of a collared dove but is appreciably smaller.. Seen at Grove Ferry near Thanet Kent, with its chest puffed out uttering a range of cooing calls.

JUST HAD TO POST, despite the poor quality, as it could be years before another chance comes my way.

THANK YOU for your visit and friendship, hope you are all enjoying the sunshine, keep that smile on your face and love in your heart for everyone, God bless..............................Tomx

So after heartbreakingly loosing 5 years worth of work thanks to the shitty design of eternal hard drives, coupled with me being so concerned with other things to afford cloud computing or yet another EHD, I decided I will slowly have to retrace my steps over time and replace my work with new stuff in the same categories. It will probably take me most of the year to be honest.

Thus above is another new one for "Where the Wild Lights Are", which from the bonnet of my best friends new car, name Eddie, and it's a metallic electric blue Volkswagen T-Cross, and he's a beauty! Expect more to come.

I hope everyone is well and so as always, thank you!

This sweet baby red squirrel is about half the size of it's siblings. It would have fit in the palm of my hand. It's head is shaped different as are the eyes. As I got closer I saw it has a defected tooth that is reaching towards it's nose. It was preventing it from eating the corn in it's hands. I tried to catch it but it kept going up high in the tree. It seemed fine as far as behaviour but I don't see how it could eat properly with that tooth which needs to be ground down. I only saw it for two days and haven't seen it again. Life is always difficult where the wild things live. So adorable but heartbreaking.

My already broken heart is now black as coal too.

It's high enough to reach the sky

It's wide enough to embrace the sea

This is how my heart is getting dyed

with your scents

Like this, love you, love you, love you, I love you

It’s warm, just thinking of you makes me happy

Just the thought of embracing you makes me smile

You who dyed my world

If you are a flower in the garden

If you are a cloud in the sky

I want to decorate everything inside of you beautifully

with my own colors

Like this, love you, love you, love you, I love you

It’s warm, just thinking of you makes me happy

Just the thought of embracing you makes me smile

You who dyed my world

You became my hope, you became my joy

Wherever I go, I think of you

When will my heartbreaking love be visible to you or reach you again?

I want to give it all

I love you, love you, I love you

It’s warm, just thinking of you makes me happy

Words that I love you can't express all of my feelings

my heart is full

Like this, love you, love you, love you, I love you

It’s warm, just thinking of you makes me happy

Just the thought of embracing you makes me smile

You who dyed my world

I want to live in a garden like you

I realise this is a very stark image - I chose it partly because it matches the tones of the video, but it also reflects my own feelings. This is also a tribute to my dear father who endured 5 years of treatment without hope of remission or recovery.

Not everything in life is nice and pretty, and I am amazed at his bravery and his willingness to carry on and be there for everyone - and in the end, though we were all powerless to help him with the illness, the care and love of those around him became the only thing that held any meaning and joy as all those things that once brought color to his life, were slowly let go. Miss you dad.

My Bob has had a rough week... last Thursday we had to rush him to the emergency vet because he was staining to make.... he was yowling all over the house, staining while he was walking.... the vet said his bladder was full and he had a blockage.... after flushing him out in both areas, we took him home... a few days and he still acted strange... constantly going in and out of the box and nothing... but then he did make and what a relief...

On Monday I took him to our vet and she did a lot of tests, even a urine culture.... thank goodness his levels are not bad and he's acting like his old self.... he is 17 years old!

She put him on an antibiotic for a week and I'm hoping that will also help him feel better.

It's so scary and heartbreaking when you know they don't feel well and they can't tell you what is wrong...

Thank God he is doing better... so we want to wish everyone a Happy Caturday and enjoy the rest of the weekend!!

Happy Caturday

This special Caturday, our group is celebrating memories of the wonderful cats that have shared their lives with us.

Eddie was possibly the most beautiful cat I have ever known. He came here quite suddenly, climbing the apple tree outside the kitchen window so he could be noticed. One look at his amazing beauty was all it took to steal our hearts.

We fed Eddie every morning and evening for a couple of years. He would not allow us to approach him and remained very aloof and standoffish.

I remember the last time I ever saw this wonderful cat. He stopped and looked back over his shoulder at me. I was able to capture this in a photo. Heartbreakingly, we never saw him again or knew what happened to him.

I've been away from Flickr for a while as it's 'that time of year' at work and I also hadn't really used the camera for a while. But the terrible happenings over the last week or so in Ukraine, combined with rising gas and electricity prices, never-ending Winter and the misery of Covid uncertainty still hanging around, made me want to get the camera out and create something nice. Spring flowers always make me feel hopeful, even when the world is in such a mess.

Thinking today of our fellow humans in Ukraine. Utterly heartbreaking that this situation can still occur in 2022.

Sending prayers and all positive vibes and thoughts for your recovery after the heartbreaking shooting you experienced. Wishing you strength and courage.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️

we’re all doing our best in this complicated, heartbreaking, and wondrous world. some days are better than others. we make mistakes; we meet our edge. and we begin again and again.

This old Wisconsin round barn was in pretty dilipidated shape until recently when a new roof was installed. Too often these marvels of rural architecture are left to their own devices, and the results are heartbreaking. More work still needs to be done to this old beauty, but now it has time, and can be enjoyed by a new generation....

Round barns gained a short lived popularity in the late 1800's and early 1900's because of their perceived efficiency. But the high cost of construction was a obstacle to them becoming popular...

"How rough the morning was. So white, so cool against the gentle violet of the night; So harshly and simply for the richly dressed dreams. As impregnably clear as glassplitter on the naked skin, when he was still soft and vulnerable under the sheets. So heartbreaking light when you had to die. " ― Lilach Mer, The seventh swan.

Walking the streets and stone paths one last time. Beautiful and heartbreaking. Thank you Mitzy, your love was evident in every prim.

Elan Valley, Powys, Wales, UK

I didn't have any intention of ever posting this shot. I took it back in May on a whim as I liked the way the sunlight was shining through the trees. It's a shot my favourite woodland.

We visited the Elan Valley a couple of weeks ago and had intended to stop of there on our way to the Harfod Estate. The road was closed.... I assumed for repairs as it's a bit iffy in places. I have since found out that the road was closed in order to clear the woodland following the identification of Larch Disease. I know it has to happen but it doesn't make it any easier. I'm devastated that this beautiful woodland will be lost. The Elan Valley Estate have committed to replacing it with a mix of conifer and broad leaf trees but this will take time.

UPDATE: So, I visited the Elan Valley last weekend (6/2/22) following the re-opening of the road that passes by this woodland. Whilst it was heartbreaking to see the stumps of the once majestic Douglas Firs, I'm pleased to report that this particular piece of woodland is still intact. The felling stopped approx 50m to the right of this shot.

Farewell to my favourite woodland.

we're in a global pandemic. life is heartbreaking, precious, and very real. nature, though, moves forward undeterred. spring follows winter. plants grow from the ground. tiny flowers bloom. our tender hearts begin to open with gratitude.

This isn't just a song...

27 years passed from its release, and today, when a month passed since the beginning of this horrible war it's heartbreaking to hear it.

Michael Jackson - Earth Song (Official Video)

A moody day looking at North Cascade National Park's Diablo Lake. For some reason there weren't many folks here, enjoying the light rain. The silence was delightfully deafening.

Seems we photographers can no longer head out in July or August for good landscape shots in the Pacific NW. The air is unhealthy and smothers the scenic views with all the continual, chronic summer wildfires. For those who love experiencing nature's gifts this is heartbreaking.

Speaking of silence, that's how this planetary crisis is being addressed by those in power. Regardless of your take on climate change the facts and damage are undeniably right in front of us. It is agonizing witnessing this tragedy grow worse with each year.......We photographers get it, may the rest wake up and address it soon.

Stepping off my soapbox now. Enjoy your Wednesday!

The Absaroka Mountains form a spectacular background for Montana Rail Link’s Livingston Local as it claws its way up the east side of Bozeman Pass on its way west to work customers on the other side of the mountain. The two former Rio Grande GP35’s are no strangers to mountain climbing and have the short train of mixed freight well in hand as they have for the many years they have been assigned to this job.

Yesterday’s heartbreaking news about the inevitable end of this treasured regional railroad has had me reminiscing on the day spent chasing this job during the first of two trips I have made to shoot the MRL. An abundance of photogenic trains, classic signal hardware, and spectacular western scenery made for a vacation-like experience comparable to nothing else.

My submission for the the group 😃Smile on Saturday😊 and the theme is Fancy Fabrics. Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois suffered extreme storms in the middle of the night and it’s not over yet. 1 tornado traveled 200 miles It went from Arkansas to Kentucky. The destruction is devastating and heartbreaking. It took an Amazon warehouse out. Please pray for the bereaved families and the and all the people affected by this natural disaster. 🙏. I will not be very active today for personal reasons. Thank you for your visit, faves and comments. Most of all thank you for saying a prayer for the states that these storms have destroyed.

It's unbelievable .. and heartbreaking ... and it makes me sad and anxious and very angry at the same time ...

“Life is amazing. And then it's awful. And then it's amazing again. And in between the amazing and the awful, it's ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That's just living a heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life. And it's breathtakingly beautiful.” - L.R. Knost

There is a heartbreaking and infuriating story behind this artwork. This work is in memory of poor Sheba, a gorgeous tiger who lost her life. Long story but locals are spitting mad that she had to be put down, and her owner is absolutely heartbroken. She was directly a victim of the main problem that plagues South Africa: the ANC government. As i said, long story but i wanted to make something in her memory.

A classic afternoon view, clearly showing the scars in the landscape left behind by storm Vaia in 2018. The stark contrast between the remaining lush forest and the huge patches of completely barren land is heartbreaking

Astute music lovers will recognise the title as a line from Jim Croce's magnificent song, "Time in a Bottle". It is 50 years since Jim's moment in time came to an end in a fiery plane crash on September 20, 1973. Fifty years! The news of Jim's death made a big impression on me, because it seemed such a loss of a truly rare songwriting talent.

In this original video released just months before Jim's death he holds his beloved son and swings him around joyfully. Time is short. These moments are priceless. But we hardly know them as such at the time. The lyrics in that context are heartbreakingly beautiful and true. www.youtube.com/watch?v=95g2Fi1aJDs

So what does this have to do with my picture? Well I hope you can see that I have processed it for atmosphere (like an old faded slide). All we have here is a kind of nostalgic moment and we are alone. A moment frozen in time. But what's around the corner of the lighthouse? Does that small view of the sea remind us that we are on a voyage across time? And like that beautiful scene at the end of The Lord of the Rings, does sailing into the West eventually bring us to fairer shores? We hope so.

No matter how much we try to bottle time, the reality is our sands of time are running out. But imagine for just a moment if in fact every single moment in time is not only being bottled, but preserved for all Eternity. Wouldn't that be special?

Pathways through the wheat

unmistakeable

I've taken this route so many times I could walk it with my eyes shut

but wait

there are others ahead

and to the sides

that aren't so well defined

they've also been walked through

though the lines aren't so clear and the wheat remains intact

but the echoes remain

some still resonate

with traces that stir feelings

like long forgotten dreams of past times

often heartbreaking

sometimes blissful

journeying ahead

always ahead

until at last

the karmic seeds

are burnt

and dispersed
