frank chester is an old friend who is an artist, geometrician, scientist.. he is the discoverer of a lawful seven-sided platonic form called the chestahedron.. yesterday, frank hosted the opening of 'new forms technology,' a donated research laboratory in san carlos, california, to begin work on his discoveries about water enhancement as well as applications to medical and other fields. he is someone who cares deeply about the planet and who is actually doing something to fix things without a thought for personal gain. the organization is non-profit. frank has a seed grant, but, hopefully, he will attract the additional funding and volunteers that he needs to carry on this extremely important work.

Nina Starr Braunwald, M.D., was one of the first women to train as a general surgeon at New York's Bellevue Hospital, from 1952 to 1955. A pioneer in the field of heart surgery, she led the team that was the first to replace a human mitral valve (a heart valve which she also designed). She was the first woman to be certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and the first woman to be elected to the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. She is shown adjusting a test chamber holding an artificial heart valve.

This three-dimensional model of a human left heart ventricle was engineered with a nanofiber scaffold seeded with heart cells. It could be used to study diseases, test drugs and develop patient-specific treatments for heart conditions such as arrhythmia.

Yorkshire 3 Peaks. This was taken after I completed all 3 for charity in 8 hours 40 mins. Ironically every peak I got to was encased in cloud and it wasn't until my final descent that the tops became clear!

Starting on the left is Whernside, Pen-y-ghent is in the far distance just left of centre, Ingleborough is next along, the last lump in the set of 3 in the middle and then back to Whernside.

The 3 peaks challenge starts in the village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale (out of sight). Pen-y-ghent is first, a quick climb to the top before a long descent too the viaduct. Then its a long hard slog up Whernside, and this year it was tough again, very draining. The descent from Whernside is short and sharp and is tough on the knees and is very bad in the wet. Finally you cross the road and Old Hill Inn to begin the climb to Ingleborough, which includes a very steep zig zag up one side.

I shot this panorama quickly so apologies for the quality.

Although this is the last photo with my camera took that day, we did make it across all 3 peaks (unfortunately my Dad had to retire due to very bad knee problems). I completed it in 10 hours and 35 minutes, with the rest of our party arriving within another 20 minutes. WELL DONE to everyone who took part - you all did brilliantly despite the weather. We as a team managed to raised £3000 for Heart Research. And some of us are stupid enough to plan to do it again next year!

This is the last true picture that my Canon 300D will ever take as it got very very wet after this. My bag was not waterproof, but neither did it have any way of letting the water out that did get in. I arrived at the bottom of Ingleborough to find the side of the camera sitting in about 2 cms of water. It's not been the same since. Thank goodness my house contents insurance covers accidental damage to personal possessions. Now to decide whether to go for a 400D kit with a grip and cashback or just a 450D kit on its own???

But first we have to get down! Not as easy as it looks. battling against high winds and rain and a very rocking steep uneven path. This descent marked the end for my dad as his knees were knackered he unfortunately couldn't continue on to Ingleborough. But he did very well to get that far. And he'll be back next year with me hopefully!

It's 6:16 am and we head off to join the queue to clock in for the start. Nice cloud cover, reasonably mild, only 25 miles, 10.5 hours and we'll be back here, but in far worse weather conditions. Constant heavy rain & wind.

As expected on the first peak, there was a steady stream of people working their way up.

Do you know the runner(s) ?

The weather up here was awful. Winds of at least 80mph constantly whipped across your face.

As ready as we'll ever be we set off at just before 7am
