Hmmm !! j'ai entendu qu'il y avait du Sake !!!? Donnes le moi !

Hmmm!! I heard there's Sake!!!? Give it to me!

I heard the alarm calls of birds and squirrels while hiking through some dense forest. I was near a creek bed and looked upstream, where I saw a shape that didn't quite match the rest of the landscape. I zoomed in and saw this one eyed bobcat sitting on a rock. Bobcats have been extremely active lately. This is my third sighting in the past three weeks. All in different locations.

I first heard of the Dancing Aspens a few years ago. I'm not typically into visiting spots other photographers favor, but I felt drawn to see this grove of trees since I live only a few hours away.

Everyone I know that has gone has always guarded their location. After reading some blogs and getting some riddle-esque tips from friends, I had a pretty good idea of where they were. Since it was autumn and the leaves would be golden, we headed up to where I thought they would be and quickly found the grove!

There was another photographer there when we arrived. I let him get his shots before I took too many of my own using my classic lenses, my Canon FD 24mm f/1.4 L, Noct-Nikkor, and some ultrawide photos with the modern Sony 4/16-35.

We spent about an hour enjoying the changing light as the clouds passed overhead and taking photos before heading out to find a campsite.

The 18th century salt tax office is now abandoned. As far as I heard the city council wants to let it rot, because there's dry rot somewhere. Unsure though if it counts as lost place. It's in the center of the city.

When I heard high winds were expected in Rocky Mountain National Park, I deiced there was a good chance for clear ice and blowing snow. It was difficult trying to walk on the ice and get a sharp image with the insane wind, and the snow blowing up the back of my shirt made things really cold, but the light was amazing so it was 100% worth it. Great fun!!!

I've heard it referred to informally as "The Arc" but it doesn't come up formally as such.

Music, design, photography, boating and having a good time were his life passions. Overwhelming generosity, and unconditional love for familyand friends defined his life. He is survived by his devoted wife, Val (Savary) and four children.

I heard a commotion of magpies and only then noticed their target.

He was so far away I'm surprised the D500 locked on... especially since he was below the tree line. We get a reasonably clear view of the distant neighbourhood as he's almost nearer to them houses than to me!

This is a tight crop... wish he could have been nearer. But he's quite elusive!

If you listened carefully you may have heard some gnashing of teeth as I was writing this... I don't really like the name for our plant, 'Dorotheanthus'. Martin Heinrich Gustav Schwantes (1881-1960) who coined this word (1927) no doubt much loved his mother Dorothea Schwantes née Meyer (1849-?), but I think his ear was off when he made up 'Dorotheanthus'. Yet there we are: it is our plant's official name.

But we are still allowed, too, to use its synonym: Mesembryanthemum, coined by Johann Jakob Dillenius (1684-1749) in 1719 and adopted by great Carolus Linnaeus. Give it to considerate Dillenius to have sought not to overly confuse his botanical colleagues. Earlier in 1684, Jacob Breyne (1637-1697) had used the word 'Mesembrianthemum', which he derived from the Greek words for noon and for flower. But between 1684 and 1719 more of this kind of plant had been found, some of which did not flower at midday. Hence Dillenius - seeking to leave more or less intact Breyne's designation - changed only a single letter in the latter's name: the 'i' for a 'y'; it now meant - again with Greek derivation - 'a flower with its pistil ('embryo') in the middle'. Now, that's the kind of inventivity I really like.

I've Never Heard That Sound Either, But I'm Sure It's Nothing To Worry About

I had read and heard about how Cathedral Rock outside of Sedona lights up under the right circumstances, and while there are many, many images of this iconic landmark, I had never been there and was anxious to shoot this location. We had been to Sedona a couple of days earlier, but it was overcast, cold and rainy with no hope of a sunset. In fact, that evening on our way back to Williams, it snowed heavily. A couple of days later, the sun was out, and with temperatures in the 70's we headed back. After scouting locations for a shoot in the afternoon, I headed back towards evening hoping to get the clouds and light. The park where I stopped and this particular location are very popular, and people came and went throughout the couple of hours I was here, snapping selfies and taking in the magnificent view. As I waited for the right moment, a couple from Michigan came by and we enjoyed pleasant conversation as we passed the time. As always it was the "is it going to happen or not" as clouds came and went and the rocks drifted in light and shadow. We waited and waited and I felt the time had passed for the shot I was after. I decided it was time to head back to town and find a place for dinner. I had my gear stowed and I was walking away when the clouds parted and the rocks lit up. I quickly got my gear back out and started to shoot. This happened again - putting everything away only to get things back out. In the end it was a great light show and I am glad I stayed. Ah, patience - so rewarding yet so difficult!

I first heard about this legendary lens in 2006, just as I was really getting serious doing photography. I was 20 and it was way out of my price range, and why would anyone want an old manual focus lens? The allure of this special lens and the way it renders the light the passes through it is just something special. I’ve kept my eye on the pricing of this lens since then. I’ve read countless blogs about how it is so special...I just couldn’t ever convince myself to pull the trigger and buy one.

Then one day this July I was reading a blog post about this lens, one I’d read 100 times before and I thought I’d check the prices. On eBay they were all going for what I was expecting and I thought to myself I’d check KEH Camera a very reputable used gear seller. To my surprise, they had one in stock. It was about ¼ less than what they were going for on eBay and KEH rated this one as “bargain” quality.

If you’ve ever bought from KEH you’ll know that their ratings are VERY generous. I thought I’d take the chance and if it was in poorer condition I’d send it back with their generous return policy. The lens arrived, glass in perfect condition, and a single scrape on the metal lens barrel, other than that it was in perfect condition.

So I kept it, and have just fallen in love with this lens. I’m so glad it lived up to all the hype and I love the images I’ve taken with it so far. I look forward to the ones I haven’t taken yet. This is one of those lenses I’ll never sell or part with.

Have you heard this Parable?

Shortcuts through rough times may lead to shortcomings later down the road. Let's learn to ask God what we are supposed to learn from a rough situation...instead of asking God to remove that thing entirely.

Whatever your cross,

whatever your pain,

there will always be sunshine,

after the rain ....

Perhaps you may stumble,

perhaps even fall,

But God's always ready,

To answer your call ...

He knows every heartache,

sees every tear,

A word from His lips,

can calm every fear ...

Your sorrows may linger,

throughout the night,

But suddenly vanish,

in dawn's early light ...

The Savior is waiting,

somewhere above,

To give you His grace,

and send you His love ..

Whatever your cross,

whatever your pain,

"God always sends rainbows ....

after the rain ... "

To get out of difficulty, one must usually go through it!

A look down the Pine River on Breakwater Falls. The low water level meant I could get out onto rocks that are normally in the fast flow.

Simple compositions work best I recently heard and to be honest they were not wrong! These fields of Seinfoin really have added a few images to my portfolio after this session and this for me is another belter. There are, in fact two deer in this image, one fairly obvious, the other less so (I didn't even realise it was there until i edited it).

Wiltshire has many areas of these gently rolling fields and minimal compositions are fairly easy to come by but hard to photograph right. The light in this session was THE best I have ever had in landscape photography andreally does make this particular comp for me.

I am nearly at the end of my epic near 3 week continuous work sterak and really looking forward to my day off on Monday......with temperature forecasts of 34 degrees......yay, great.....

“And so, another year begins.” Said Sky to his friends.

“Another year? What are you on about, Sky?” Asked Bertie.

“We have just started another year, Bertie.”

“Have we? I didn’t realise we had an old one. Who told you about this?”

“I heard the man say it, Bertie. He said have a happy new year to quite a few hoomans and even the odd bear so I understand.” Explained Sky.

“Interesting, I do wonder what a year is and how he lost the last one and where it went.” Said Barnaby looking confused.

“Me too, Barnaby, shall we look for it and see if we can find it?” Asked Bertie.

“No, I don’t think I will if you don’t mind. You see, I wouldn’t know what it was if I did find it and anyway, what would a bear do with it if one did have it in one’s paw or were even sitting on it? Rather careless of the man to lose the old one though.” Said Barnaby.

“I can understand what you are saying, Barnaby, I don’t think I’ll look either. Posh, do you know what a year is and what it looks like?”

“I almost know, Bertie, for it is a hooman thing. It is a space or period of time.” Explained Posh Bear.

“How did the man lose a space or period of time? It all seems very strange to me. One could lose a jar of honey, well I suppose that might be possible, but a space or period of time… that sounds strange to me.” Said Sky shaking his head in amazement.

“No, you do not understand, hoomans, allot a period, about 365 sleeps, and call it a year and once that space or period of time has passed, they start again. That is called a new year. They count each year as it arrives.” Explained Posh Bear.

“Posh, is 365 more than ten? If so, I am not taking any noticed as it becomes confusing for my bear brain.” Said Barnaby while looking at Sky for confirmation that he was asking a sensible question.

“I agree with Barnaby, I have never found any reason to count to more than ten.” Said Sky.

“What if you have more than ten items that you want to count, Sky?” Asked Posh Bear.

“Simple, I just count to ten and then begin again. So, I might have ten and two or three. Really Posh, I thought you could have worked that out yourself.” Said Sky shaking his head in dismay.

“Well, hoomans do not count like that, Sky. They count beyond ten, so this is year 2024, which is a lot of tens.” Explained Posh Bear.

“Posh, do you know where the man put the year he has lost?” Asked Bertie.

“I said, Bertie, the man didn’t lose the year. It came to an end and so they begin again? Last year was 2023 and so now this year is 2024.” Said Posh Bear wishing he hadn’t got involved in this conversation.

“Well, I’m still not going to look for this lost period or space of time, I didn’t lose it, and so it is not my fault it has gone.” Snapped Bertie.

“I agree with Bertie, I am not looking for it either.” Said Sky.

“Me neither, but I might if I knew what it looked like.” Added Barnaby.

“Anyone bear for honey?” Asked Posh Bear trying to change the subject.

“Good idea, Posh. It is as well we take more care of our honey than the man takes of his period or space of time or we would never have any honey at all.” Said Barnaby.

“Quite right, Barnaby. Come on, let us share a jar of Posh’s honey. You are very kind, Posh, thank you so much for we were wondering how we would get some honey, as we are all out, until it arrives later today.” Said Sky smiling happily.

After striking out looking for Amtrak 606 I heard CSXT on the radio so before calling it a day I swung over to the runaround by the west (railroad north) end of the Middleboro Subdivision where I found CSXT local L007 switching on the south end of the runaround by MP 0.7 with three GP40-2s. After doing a bit of switching they will shove north to Currier and call for permission from Amtrak's NHV Line dispatcher for permission out on to the Corridor on Main 4 to shove down to East Junction to work a few customers.

The Middleboro Sub is strange in that it is owned by MassDOT and dispatched and maintained by Mass Coastal, but CSX still operates it and serves the customers as the direct corporate successor of CR, PC, NH, and all the way back to the Old Colony. In fact this particular segment of line was built in 1871 by OCRR predecessor New Bedford and Taunton Railroad.

While everyone knows of the recent MassDOT rail purchases from CSXT that were consummated in 2010, 2012, and 2015 dramatically changing the freight rail scene in eastern Mass this route is a bit more interesting. The state actually acquired this line way back in Dec 1982, but Conrail and successor CSXT operated, dispatched and maintained it for another three more decades. The state spent money to rehab the line shortly after purchase that permitted the return of seasonal passenger service and to that end, from 1986 to 1996 Amtrak's Cape Codder left the corridor at Attleboro and traveled this route to Hyannis on weekends in the summer. After that ended the line fell into disrepair and in 2015 MassDOT assigned maintenance and dispatching responsibilities to Mass Coastal. However, CSXT is still the exclusive holder of freight rights on the line and consequently Mass Coastal crews can only operate maintenance trains here.

Dude, where's my boomer?

After an unsuccessful morning the day before, we finally got a BNSF freighter from our lofty perch upon one of Glacier National Park's many hills, just before our descent back to the road we heard the dispatcher talk about the BNSF geometry train. In all our commotion, we never mentioned to Mr. Andy Reel'bauer that we were returning to the road.

Once back down, 3912 pops its head around the curve and pulls up to the stick in the background. Inspector Gadget sat there for a while! However, in none of that time did Andy ever make it back down, so we assumed he had either a) found some reels to watch or b) injured himself. Both highly likely options, so we sat yelling up the hill like madmen. After a while, it was pretty stressful and saddening to think he may never scroll again, but the train takes off all at once, and he appears at the bottom of the hill. Luckily, in one piece and not at all concerned that we thought he might have died on a mountain. We got our shot, Andy got to scroll. The world was at peace!.. You know, except for all the conflict happening.

I once heard it said that, "With age comes perspective." That is so true.

Regarding the railroad, I would like to take some creative license and modify this wise proverb to state, "With seniority comes perspective. "

When the word " seniority" is mentioned on the railroad, it generally applies to the number of jobs and the quality of jobs that an employee can work due to their date of hire. Just one day on the seniority roster can mean the difference between an employee holding days or nights, choice of rest days, etc.

In my opinion, seniority is an invaluable asset for an employer as well. With it comes experience, insight, and knowledge acquired by an employee performing a job day by day, year after year.

Ask any railroader and they will say the same. The art of railroading is something that cannot be learned from a book. Each day on the locomotive, in the tower, in the shops, or out in the yard is like a day in the classroom, an education.

Every day is unique. As an engineer, each train handles differently as no two trains are the same. As a conductor, no two switch lists are the same or performed under the same conditions. The same applies to every craft of the railroad, including MofW, C&S, Mechanical, Dispatching, etc.

In March of this year, I celebrated 30 years of service. Three decades at the throttle working for two Class One carriers, Conrail and Norfolk Southern. It is hard for me to believe that time has passed by so quickly.

Much has changed on the rails since I hired in 1994. Some change for the better, a larger portion for the worse. As technology increases, change is expected and inevitable. From my experiences on the railroad, it has not been favorable for the crews in T&E.

That being said, I could allow PSR, the constant electronic monitoring, and daily incompetence to taint my perspective on my beloved job. But I refuse. I will not allow them to infect the joy I get from running a locomotive.

God blessed me with the opportunity to live out a childhood dream by working on the railroad as a locomotive engineer. While my job has changed considerably, I still climb up on a locomotive and cross the Division at a mile per minute. Wind in my hair and hand on the horn!

My final two years of running trains will be upon me before I realize. I plan on savoring my time at the throttle on every trip, smiling mile after mile, crossing after crossing.

Life is too short!

Everybody has heard of Zermatt, Switzerland. It is a tourist mecca and a skier paradise. It is always crowded and busy. The only way to get there is by train, and all food and other products are shipped by rail. No gasoline-driven vehicles are allowed in town; it has been that way for many years. When I was first there in the 1960s in winter, we got around by walking or riding on a sleigh. Today, one gets around by walking or riding a whole host of tiny battery-powered vehicles. All commercial deliveries are made in tiny battery trucks.

The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn will get you to Zermatt, and the Gornergrat Bahn (GGB) will take you from Zermatt up to Gonergrat at 10,132 feet. the GGB is a three-phase system, so there are two overhead wires.

In this scene, taken from our hotel veranda, a GGB train is heading up from Zermatt to the snowy, cloudy summit of the Gornergrat.––photo by Joe McMillan, September 23, 2024, in a light rain.

I heard loud call from birds while on a trail and when I went to check it out, I came upon another birder. She pointed out to me this barred owl was being harassed by a pair of Coopers Hawks with calls and jumping around the owl's resting spot. The harassing went on for over an hour but the owl didn't budge. This gave me amble time to photograph the owl and the hawks. In this shot the owl was looking at one of the hawk on the lower left of the image.

Dave: Hey, guys, what are you doing?

Agnes: We want back in.

Dave: But I just came outside with you.

Eva: I don't see how that's relevant. Right now we want back in.

Dave: Well, I was thinking that we could hang out on the deck and read for a bit.

Bruno: I'm not a big reader. Plus I heard there are cookies inside.

Dave: Of course there are cookies. It's our kitchen.

Agnes: And there's something else. Karen is standing by the cookie jar.

Eva: Yes she is. And she has thumbs so she can operate the cookie jar.

Dave: Have you ever considered that she may be standing by the cookie jar doing something unrelated to the cookie jar?

Bruno: I never considered that.

Agnes: That seems unlikely.

Eva: You might have a point there -- but why would I ever take that chance?

Dave: Alright. We can go back in. But, if we do what are the odds of you wanting to come right back out?

Bruno: Pretty high. Sometimes we get fed cookies outside.

The crew wanting to go back into the kitchen. I was looking for a different shot as often in the evening Eva does 3 foot vertical jumps to tell me that she wants a bedtime biscuit after her last bathroom trip of the night. But, apparently I was trying for that too early in the evening so this is all that she would give me.

Heard the first screaming cicadas of the season last Friday (dog day cicadas, Neotibicen spp.), and then had this one show up on my porch stairs that night. Always a little miffed when I go around to check all the bug lights I set up in the yard and then the best stuff is just at the porch light :-)
