These guys were moving faster than my shutter speed would allow, hence the slight blur. I didn't want to raise my ISO much because I knew I was underexposing all of these shots (to get the lowest noise with the highest possible shutter speed).
This is a trick you can do when setting the camera and speedlight to rear curtain sync, also known as dragging the shutter. For this shot, I took a meter reading, focused while zoomed out, pressed the shutter release, zoomed quickly (while the shutter is open) and at the end of the exposure, the speedlight flashed just before closing the shutter. Takes some practice but if you do it correctly, it works well. Longer exposures or subjects lit with ambient streetlights can lead to ghost images. So practice makes perfect.
I consider this one of my favorites from 2011. I have never shot fireworks before and was asked last minute by the agency to photograph them. So I had to quickly figure out the best way to do it while the girl from the agency was standing over my shoulder asking me how they were turning out. It was stressful and I had to ask her to just let me take the shots and I would show her the results. Despite that, it was a good challenge and I'm thrilled with the results.
