Patience rewarded - 61306 LNER B1 'Mayflower' and 35018 Southern Railway Merchant Navy Class 'British India Line' double head the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express as they cross Ribblehead Viaduct at sunset on 2 February 2019.
A snow covered Batty Moss illuminated by the setting sun adds to the wonderful sense of occasion and drama of this unique scene as both locomotives gently steam their way southbound on the return leg to London from Carlisle with a subtle exhaust emanating from both engines.
I've been after this shot for over 5 years and it requires the perfect combination of factors to bring the scene together; I believe the last time this occurred was in January 2012. Usually only one or two of the handful of runs that the Winter CME makes per year places the return leg of the train at Ribblehead at, or close to sunset. As the chances of a decent sunset are not particularly high this time of year, coupled with the tendency of the late running of the train, makes the odds heavily stacked against the shot coming together. Last week, however, the shot was definitely 'on' and finally my patience and determination were rewarded with some super lighting across the scene and the added bonus of a snow clad Batty Moss.

Drastically honored here! I wish I shot smaller, to fit it in better, but .... (shrug, grin, jump up and down in excitement

The spot at the end of my road has become a little overgrown now... LMS Stanier Jubilee Class 4-6-0 45596 "Bahamas" and LNER Thompson B1 Class 4-6-0 61306 "Mayflower" pair up to lead the Steam Dreams excursion to Cornwall, seen between Earley and Reading.
This giant bison jumped the fence ... what a job that must be ... watched about 100 of them jump in this same spot. This big guy looked to be taking a header but he was just fine.

Just trying to fix the header and reloaded this photo so there is not need to comment on it once again.

A last foray with the seed heads. It's getting tedious and too time consuming... haha..
Went for a double header as my original idea proved irksome. Same lighting set up as yesterday with the on camera YN560IV set to 1/8 @ 24mm gelled Rogue Dusky Pink. The off camera speedlight was set to 1/128 @ 24mm, gridded and gelled Oklahoma Yellow. I discovered by obscuring the onboard flash with the hand held I could introduce the black into the frame which I quite liked.
I have also used a Raynox DCR-250 in this set up so unlike yesterday this has had no crop whatsoever. My first time using the Raynox and by crikey it makes the DoF narrow! So this isn't as sharp as I'd like it or I have completely missed my focus point!! Probably the latter :)
Set up shot in the comments below :)
