I was brainstorming (it was a small little storm) how crafters who do not embroider could make a softie like Jimmy Doggie (leader of the pack) for the Softies for Mirabel campaign.

Some experimentation with fabric markers yielded pretty decent results. Well, my daughters love them so I figure at least other children might enjoy them. Also, they are perfect for babies because there is nothing to come apart, choke, endanger the child.

Take some prewashed heavy-weight white woven fabric (not knit). Very lightly, with a deft hand, draw a design. You could trace one from a copy-right free image too. Again, very very lightly, with small strokes fill in colour. The markers I was using really wanted to bleed badly.

Once your art is completed, sandwich it face side down against some cute contrasting fabric. The two "bad" sides should be facing out. Pin, trim to appropriate size. I added a little ribbon pull. The ribbon is looped down so it is sandwiched in between the two right sides. Sew together by hand or with machine. Leave an inch and a half (or so) opening. All around the curved edges make little cuts in the fabric up to but not through the seam. This makes it turn more smoothly.

Grab your little ribbon handle and turn the softie right side out. Stuff with fiber fill. I used the softer clumpier kind. Pin the opening closed. Sew closed using a whip stitch.

Voila! A softie ready for little hands!
