A short get-away to British Columbia earlier this summer started my love affair with these beautiful birds. This photo shows their summer breeding plumage. They have become my favorite to photograph and I love their haunting calls. You can listen to them below.

Dry lightning over neighbors house.

This tree is across from our parking spot at our condo and when the light is right it looks kind of spooky! A small cypress tree with strangled fig. I used a mono preset on Lightroom to create the mood and textures.

Hauntingly lit, the Castle of the Trakai Island in Lithuania still holds its glory.

Nothing has a more haunting call. Especially when you are alone, near the ground watching Marsh wrens and then suddenly out of nowhere behind you - Mwhahahahaha. Before I could turn around this Rail popped out in front of me responding to the other call. This is the best view of a Rail I ever had. I was in full camo at the time which I think was a critical requirement to getting this shot.

Many locals have made claims they say that you can hear the rumbling sounds of a train nearing, the steam whistle howling, and the screeching of wheels as if the train is grinding to a halt, but nothing ever appears, nothing is there at all, except for the haunting chill of the night.

The sight of a Red Kite, or two, or three, gently soaring over our countryside is now, once more, a familiar thing. The reintroduction of this species to Britain must rate as one of the conservation success stories of the modern era.

Once a common bird over much of the country, even haunting the litter-ridden and filthy streets of our cities, Red Kites were seen as disease-carrying vermin and bounties were paid for their carcasses. The population retreated, finding a final refuge in the valleys of central Wales. A handful of breeding pairs hung on. In 1989, six birds were released at a site in Scotland and a further four birds were released in the Chilterns.

Red Kites are extremely long-winged and long-tailed and very large, with slightly larger bodies and very much longer wings than a Buzzard. They are predominantly rufous red, with dark wing tips and pale outer wings. The head is pale, with older birds developing almost white heads, and the long, red tail is deeply forked and used as a stabiliser in flight, twisting back and forth – a characteristic clue to the Red Kite’s identity, even with only distant views.

Red Kites are found across much of northern Europe and into Iberia in the south west and Russia in the east. Only populations from the western part of the range are resident, those from further east are migratory and one of the challenges for the reintroduction programme was to source birds from a non-migratory population to ensure a similar lifestyle to the previous British kites. Most of the Chilterns birds were sourced from the sedentary and common Spanish population for this reason, although birds for the later, more northerly reintroductions have often been sourced from the thriving Swedish migrant population (Courtesy Hawk & Owl Trust).

The Raseborg castle ruins, situated on a rock by Raseborg stream, are the remainders of a castle that was probably built in the 14th century, when the rock was still surrounded by water.

Battles were fought between Swedish and Danish forces and even pirates over control of the castle in the Middle Ages.

This is a early photo I came across on my laptop while browsing my pictures. I have always thought there was something hauntingly beautiful about it so hence I wrote a caption to capture the eerie feel of it. Well this is the way I feel when I look at this picture and hope others can see it to. Everybody is unique and feel differently so maybe it is just me that thinks this picture has a eerie atmosphere...lol...this was taken on the rocks at the bottom of our garden on Ballywhiskin Beach
