Erinnerung an den Schlager der Comedian Harmonists:

Among many things the Harmonists made, was wine. Beneath the brick mechanics building, which houses a variety of shops, is a massive stone-arched wine cellar with its original barrels-one which could hold twelve hundred gallons of one of the Harmonists' famous wines. The cellar is about the same as it was in the 1800s.

Sometimes my cactuses on the windowsill aren't just green. When they're in bloom, I can't resist getting my camera, of course. That way I can enjoy the flowers for longer - without pricking myself.

Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus

steht draußen am Balkon,

hollari, hollari, hollaro.

Was brauch ich rote Rosen,

was brauch ich roten Mohn,

hollari, hollari, hollaro.

Und wenn ein Bösewicht

was Ungezognes spricht,

dann hol ich meinen Kaktus

und der sticht, sticht, sticht.

Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus

steht draußen am Bakon,

hollari, hollari, hollaro.

Kann mir jemand den Artnamen mitteilen? Kann someone tell me the species name?

Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus steht draußen am Balkon,

hollari, hollari, hollaro!

Was brauch' ich rote Rosen, was brauch' ich roten Mohn,

hollari, hollari, hollaro!

Und wenn ein Bösewicht was ungezog'nes spricht,

dann hol' ich meinen Kaktus und der sticht, sticht, sticht.

Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus steht draußen am Balkon,

hollari, hollari, hollaro!

My small green cactus stands outside on the balcony

hollari, hollari, hollaro!

What do need red roses for, why do I need red poppy

hollari, hollari, hollaro!

And when a villain speaks something nasty

I get out my cactus and it stings, stings, stings

My small green cactus stands outside on the balcony

hollari, hollari, hollaro!

The ocean is a mighty harmonist.

I photographed this neighbourhood walkway and fence while visiting the historic town of New Harmony, Indiana. I felt this scene was emblematic of the town in many ways: quiet; beautiful; and restful.

New Harmony is a historic town on the Wabash River in Harmony Township, Posey County, Indiana. It lies 15 miles north of Mount Vernon, the county seat, and is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The town's population was 690 at the 2020 census.

Established by the Harmony Society in 1814 under the leadership of George Rapp, the town was originally known as Harmony (also called Harmonie). In its early years the 20,000-acre (8,100 ha) settlement was the home of Lutherans who had separated from the official church in the Duchy of Württemberg and immigrated to the United States. The Harmonists built a new town in the wilderness, but in 1824 they decided to sell their property and return to Pennsylvania. Robert Owen, a Welsh industrialist and social reformer, purchased the town in 1825 with the intention of creating a new utopian community and renamed it New Harmony. The Owenite social experiment, beautiful in concept but flawed in reality, failed two years after it began.

New Harmony changed American education and scientific research. Town residents established the first public library, a civic drama club, and a public school system open to men and women. Its prominent citizens included Owen's sons: Robert Dale Owen, an Indiana congressman and social reformer who sponsored legislation to create the Smithsonian Institution; David Dale Owen, a noted state and federal geologist; William Owen, a New Harmony businessman; and Richard Owen, Indiana state geologist, Indiana University professor, and first president of Purdue University. The town also served as the second headquarters of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Numerous scientists and educators contributed to New Harmony's intellectual community, including William Maclure, Marie Louise Duclos Fretageot, Thomas Say, Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, Joseph Neef, Frances Wright, and others.

Many of the town's old Harmonist buildings have been restored. These structures, along with others related to the Owenite community, are included in the New Harmony Historic District.

"The ocean is a mighty harmonist." - William Wordsworth

In the course of a lengthy road trip from Western Canada to Southeastern United States, I visited the historic town of New Harmony, where I composed this image.

New Harmony Indiana is a town with a unique history, one it has built on over the years. Established in 1814, it was home, in sequence, to two utopian communities. The Harmonists strove to provide physical, intellectual and spiritual health for their residents. Ten years later, the Owenites succeeded the Harmonists, and attempted to improve humanity through innovations in social theory, educational systems and discoveries in natural science.

Both of these efforts ultimately failed. However the efforts of the utopians was not entiely in vain. The town was left with a rich history, and the world was left with lessons about the wisdom of seeking this particular form of community perfection.

There is an historic area in New Harmony which features settlers' homes from the early 19th century, This image is an example of such a structure.

This is an exhibit of the former Rappite church building of the New Harmony, Indiana, settlement as displayed in the town's Atheneum Visitors Center. John George Rapp, also known as Father Rapp, was the head of a commune, where members shared all things. These German immigrant separatists, members of the Harmony Society, founded their own secluded place from the world–Harmony, Indiana. After the Harmonists failed and the living followers moved away, a secular group of utopians tried their own sociological experiment. This new group called their settlement New Harmony, which is the name that remains to this day. The Rappite church building has long disappeared.

In the course of a lengthy road trip from Western Canada to Southeastern United States, I visited the historic town of New Harmony, where I composed this welcome sign.

Picture: House on the quiet loch

Location: Scotland

A loch (usually Lough as a name element outside Scotland) is a body of water which is either a lake or a sea inlet, which may be also a firth, fjord, estuary or bay. Sea-inlet lochs are often called sea lochs.

This name for a body of water is Gaelic[1] in origin and is applied to most lakes in Scotland and to many sea inlets in the west and north of Scotland. For a list, see List of lochs in Scotland.

As a name element Loch has become Lough for many bodies of water in Ireland and for some in the north of England. However, reference to the latter as lochs or loughs (lower case initial), rather than as lakes, inlets and so on, is unusual. For lists, see List of Irish loughs and List of English loughs.

Although there is no strict size definition, a small loch is often known as a lochan (so spelled also in Scottish Gaelic; in Irish it is spelled lochán).

Perhaps the most famous Scottish loch is Loch Ness, although there are other large examples such as Loch Awe, Loch Lomond and Loch Tay.

Examples of sea lochs in Scotland include Loch Long, Loch Fyne, Loch Linnhe, Loch Eriboll, Loch Tristan, Trisloch.

Scotland has very few natural water bodies actually called 'lakes'. The Lake of Menteith, an Anglicisation of the Scots Laich o Menteith meaning a "low-lying bit of land in Menteith", and applied to the loch there because of the similarity of the sounds of the words laich and lake. The Lake of the Hirsel, Pressmennan Lake and Lake Louise, (In the grounds of Skibo Castle), are other bodies of water in Scotland which are called lakes and all are man-made. Most Scots will be quick to correct anyone who refers to "lochs" as "lakes".

The word "loch" is used as a shibboleth to identify natives of England, because the hard "ch" (IPA: [x]) sound is used in Scotland whereas most English people pronounce the word like "lock".

This set of images is of the historic village of Harmony, PA. Led by George Rapp, leader of the Harmony Society of Lutheran Separatists, a party of German settlers established the town in 1804; in 1815, the town and 6000 acres were sold to the ‘second founder,’ Abraham Ziegler, a Mennonite blacksmith, and it was the Mennonites who shaped the development of the town thereafter.
