See the notes for component details. I picked this LED sign up at Target for $15--50% off because it was in their "Holiday" packaging. So, I'm attempting to use it in a more useful manner than sticking it in my car (which is what it was intended for, funny enough).
You know, like hooking it up to the Internet.
So far, I've mapped the important components (see notes) and traced pinouts IR interface and the unpopulated serial interface. The next step is soldering in a 5-pin header to the serial interface and testing it out with an RS232->TTL cable which should be here soon. Here's hoping I don't blow anything up.

I assembled and soldered it myself. The power connections are certainly working, as it gets a DHCP address and responds to pings when connected. Now to write some test code.
(photographic side note: I was quite surprised at how well this picture came out. It was taken using an N95 in closeup mode, on a white piece of paper, with a power-saving lightbulb in an anglepoise lamp overhead. I sent it to Flickr directly from the phone and brought up the brightness and contrast using Flickr's online editing. lofi all the way.)
I changed an old, 1 euro push-light into a power source for my Arduino! It holds 4 AA batteries. Push it once to switch on, push once again for switching off. Of course it's heavy and extremely bulky, but it's my first 'hardware hack' and I'm immensely pleased with myself :-)

still from the video installation sue. sue is an selfgenerating oscillating image made with a modified color tv. becuase analog tv's became obsolete the modification to produce autogenerative content is the only future for those tv's.
sue is a first object on a ongoing series of autogenerative video objects.
The same Wiznet chipset as the forthcoming Arduino Ethernet, but in the form of a shield that attaches to an existing Arduino.
It took me about five minutes to get a simple HTTP request going using the ethernet software library.
The SD memory slot is reserved for future use. There's no hardware FAT32 filesystem driver, so it's only usable for direct block access right now.

I think we all remember the old NES controllers from our childhood. Matt from TunerTricks fame rewired the Apple Remote Control from my Apple TV to fit within the old controller housing. Nice!

It only ran on 12V through an auto plug, so I pulled out the instant jumpstarter for use while testing.

WAACS design & consultancy, from Rotterdam, invited me over to their out-of-office camping party. They arranged some Zunes from a client of theirs (now who would that be? ;-)) and asked me to have a go at them. This is how far I got in an afternoon.
It became this 'really social' Zune, in white because somehow they forgot that colourscheme (^_^), with an custom iTrip backpack so you can really share the music you're listening to with your friends. Zunes have a FM-receiver, so with this one Zune with a transmitter, everyone can join the party. I mean, you don’t want to be bothered with DRM-stuff and/or three-day-three-play-stuff while you’re out camping? At least I don’t. ^_^
Now, with more time on my hands and my own environment I guess it could have come out a little tighter and such, but considering the circumstances and the time frame, I guess this was pretty much the max I could get out of it.
It was a lovely day.

It got a bit unwieldy with cables going everywhere, so I put it all in a box. Haven't figured out how to make this thing wearable yet, but perhaps trimming that box down and putting it in a belt attachable box? That gigantic screen has got to go, though...

Just about everybody has a phone of some kind. Some are really nice, others are really primitive. Basically, it is a computer in your pocket. On this piece of hardware are a lot of common input and output devices: Keypad, screen, earpiece and microphone, pagermotor, backlight for keyboard, connection to one or more network systems. Some phones have other things that are neat for input and output: camera for video and still photos, flash, speakerphone, even gyroscopes and global positioning systems(gps).
So if everybody has these things, and they are so powerful, why aren’t more people using them to their fullest possibilities?
This would teach us a lot about programming for real devices, and would give us the opportunity to find out how to really own the thing that is sitting in our pockets all day. Would your friends play your game, just because you made it?
