ris is a genus of 260β300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. As well as being the scientific name, iris is also very widely used as a common name for all Iris species, though some plants called thus belong to other closely related genera. A common name for some species is 'flags', while the plants of the subgenus Scorpiris are widely known as 'junos', particularly in horticulture. It is a popular garden flower.
The often-segregated, monotypic genera Belamcanda (blackberry lily), Hermodactylus (snake's head iris), and Pardanthopsis (vesper iris) are currently included in Iris.
The genus is widely distributed throughout the north temperate zone. Their habitats are varied, ranging from cold and montane regions to the grassy slopes, meadowlands and riverbanks of the northern hemisphere.
Irises are perennial plants, growing from creeping rhizomes (rhizomatous irises) or, in drier climates, from bulbs (bulbous irises). They have long, erect flowering stems which may be simple or branched, solid or hollow, and flattened or have a circular cross-section. The rhizomatous species usually have 3β10 basal sword-shaped leaves growing in dense clumps. The bulbous species have cylindrical, basal leaves.

Okay... I know this is silly but I have had quite the day and lucky for all of you, I'm going to share! LOL
First of all I was excited at the fact that today is Thursday. Always a good sign that the week is coming to a close... the work week that is. It started out as kind of an annoying morning and I knew because of having a high-maintenance monitor with me all day (I work in cancer research and the monitor's come and make sure all of the data is accurate, etc.) I knew it was going to be a doozie! Anyway! So it ended up being a pretty good day and not nearly as stressful as I had imagined. Funny thing is... I have met this monitor woman only one other time and we have a strictly professional relationship but she decided to hug and kiss me on the cheek as she left. How totally embarassing in front of my co-workers (well you know, my friends!) So my boss just thought it was hilarious and told me to stop making out with my monitors. (on a side-note, I think she may be French-Canadian.. maybe that has something to do with it?) So anyway after that I was off to Payless to return/exchange some shoes that I bought um... in August maybe? Not only did I get to exchange for shoes I love even more, I got more than $3 back :) Woot.
Enough of that. Sorry for the story, just had quite the entertaining day. I hope you all had a great day too!
