The 6th annual BC Mining Week Community Fair provided students from across Vancouver with an educational immersion into the geology and mining. Created by the Mineral Resources Education Program of BC in partnership with the Association for Mineral Exploration BC, the fair was designed to build a better understanding about exploration and mining practices, BC’s mineral resources and the rich mining history of the province. The exhibits were a big hit for Lord Roberts students.
A few times a year, Human Connections organizes GETs (Global Engagement Trips) for student groups, tourists, and other visitors eager to gain a better understanding of the local culture in Nayarit, Mexico. This particular GET group, from Northern Illinois University, participated in a week long program centered around social entrepreneurship, NGO management, and sustainable development.

The ME Labs Team, which consists of Lab Manager Don Wirkner, Engineering Technician Mike Klein, and Design Instruction Engineer Kemal Duran, have received the University of Michigan’s Distinguished Diversity Leaders Award for their work to expand accessibility in the ME Undergraduate Machine Shop. The team fabricated solutions to bring controls for industry standard equipment setups into reach for a wider array of body types and expanded aisleways to allow for greater ease of movement, particularly for those who use assistive mobility devices.
The ME Undergraduate Machine Shop is critical to the department’s educational programs. The shop provides creative, fabrication, and hands-on learning environments for students in ME design courses. Making use of mills, lathes, a water jet cutter, and other machines to transform raw materials into machine parts and intricate mechanisms, students build robot machine players (RMPs) in ME250, motor-driven mechanisms in ME350, and any number of other devices in the department's senior capstone design course, ME450.

Over the Board Online Chess is a product that allows users to play chess with online opponents over Lichess (an online chess website) while sitting at a physical chess board. When the user makes their move on the board, it is streamed over Lichess to their opponent. When the opponent makes a move, their moves are played out automatically on the physical chess board. This product is helpful for those that enjoy the laxity and flexibility of online chess, but prefer having a physical board and clock in front of them. An array of Hall effect sensors under the board detect user moves and an electromagnet on an XY plotter make the opponent moves. The product comes with an integrated clock that displays both player's times, a scoreboard that displays game state, and buttons that allow the user to make a game, accept/offer draws, and resign to enhance the merged experience of online and over the board chess. There is also a mobile app that lets the user pair with the board to setup WiFi connection, Lichess login, and game configurations such as color preference and time control.
The project was a collaboration between Anna Huang, Rajin Nagpal, Braeden Mahnke, and Mandy He.
