A handful of improvised night shots as I was walking to my book group a few days ago. Had come straight from work, so didn't have tripod - these were done sitting camera on railings or street bollards etc to steady it. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't, but hey, it's digital, so not like we waste film if it doesn't work, so why not try?

to live each moment, each instant, absent fear, to know the waste land, and yet to dance, feel the rhythm, hum the melody of a brighter morning, see the sun, sing the light, the other side. the stars remember ... shantih shantih shantih.

(acknowledging the poet, mr. t. s. eliot - title and final 'shantih shantih shantih' from his brilliant 'the waste land', edited by and dedicated to mr. ezra pound.)

A handful of BCRail cowl have been paying back CN horsepower hours to Norfolk Southern, bringing some uncommon power to the area. Here BCOL 4610 leads NS train 227 into Harrisburg with that distinctive red-white-and-blue paint and a bell out front.

UP YBE51 rolls up on Rockford, formerly the second largest city in Illinois and the town that brought you Cheap Trick, with a pair of GP15s running push-pull. In the background is the East Rockford depot, built 1907, and one of a handful of depots that the C&NW built across Rockford.

I have chosen a handful of narcissi mainly for their intoxicating fragrance.

Tazetta Daffodils soleil d'or, yellow flowers with small orange rounded cups...

These bunch-flowered Narcissi have up to 20 or more flowers arising from each flower stem and the crown being much less than half as long as the tepals, plus the crown isn't wrinkled or "crisped."

When the buds first open, as you can see, the petals and the cups are a lemon yellow or orange...

Dwarf daffodils, the stems, bound with a ribbon, finished with a bow... in full glory

Have a great day and thank you, M, (*_*)

A handful of years ago this was a cute little house in a three sided bowl surrounded by hills. It didn't take long for this to become a ruin. Actually watched this Kentucky farmhouse decay over the years.

Of the handful of signals left north of Flint, there are a few that are hard to get good light on, partially because of the window of light, and also because of the typical lack of trains that run at that time. The signals at Elms Rd. at 13.7/13.8 fall into that category for northbound moves. Coming north with a large transformer load for Midland Cogeneration, X145 splits the signals that are on borrowed time with the only active SD50.

The Osky Job headed South across one of the handful of wooden trestles on the Oskaloosa Branch.

The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a species of tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus common throughout Europe and Asia. The red squirrel is an arboreal, primarily herbivorous rodent.

In Great Britain, Ireland, and in Italy numbers have decreased drastically in recent years. This decline is associated with the introduction by humans of the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) from North America. However, the population in Scotland is stabilising due to conservation efforts, awareness and the increasing population of the pine marten, a European predator that selectively controls grey squirrels.

The red squirrel has a typical head-and-body length of 19 to 23 cm (7+1⁄2 to 9 in), a tail length of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in), and a mass of 250 to 340 g (9 to 12 oz). Males and females are the same size. The red squirrel is somewhat smaller than the eastern grey squirrel which has a head-and-body length of 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 in) and weighs between 400 and 800 g (14 oz and 1 lb 12 oz).

The long tail helps the squirrel to balance and steer when jumping from tree to tree and running along branches and may keep the animal warm during sleep.

The red squirrel, like most tree squirrels, has sharp curved claws to help it to climb and descend broad tree trunks, thin branches, and even house walls. Its strong hind legs let it leap gaps between trees. The red squirrel also can swim.

The coat of the red squirrel varies in colour with time of year and location. There are several coat colour morphs ranging from black to red. Red coats are most common in Great Britain; in other parts of Europe and Asia different coat colours coexist within populations, much like hair colour in some human populations.

The underside of the squirrel is always white-cream in colour. The red squirrel sheds its coat twice a year, switching from a thinner summer coat to a thicker, darker winter coat with noticeably larger ear-tufts (a prominent distinguishing feature of this species) between August and November. A lighter, redder overall coat colour, along with the ear-tufts (in adults) and smaller size, distinguish the Eurasian red squirrel from the American eastern grey squirrel.

The red colour is for camouflage when seen against the bark of pine trees.

Red squirrels occupy boreal, coniferous woods in northern Europe and Siberia, preferring Scots pine, Norway spruce and Siberian pine. In western and southern Europe they are found in broad-leaved woods where the mixture of tree and shrub species provides a better year-round source of food. In most of the British Isles and in Italy, broad-leaved woodlands are now less suitable due to the better competitive feeding strategy of introduced grey squirrels.

A handful of railfans catch a pair of CSX GEs hustling an empty extra grain train west along the B&A at Springfield Union Station in some of the last light of the day. Unfortunately there were no Amtrak or CT Rail commuters in the station to greet it. You take what you can get...

#5 October 2017: A month in 31 pictures

Revisiting a pic I did a few years ago for this one. Last time I made a heart shaped filter but didn't have time to faff around with that today. My husband very kindly volunteered his services as the hand model...well, he agreed to do it...it's the same thing isn't it? ;)

A short drive north from me, Fingal Bay is a favourite place to visit.

Most of Fingal Bay is included in the Tomaree National Park, which includes forested areas, coastal scrubland, beaches and most of the Fingal headland. Fingal Island can be seen on the horizon here.

The water is pristine and clear, the most gorgeous shades of turquoise, aquamarine and blue. The sand, a pale yellow to white.

And on this morning, just a handful of people.

I stood on the shore and it was truly idyllic. Silent, except for the breaking of the gentle waves and expansive views along the beach and out to sea.

How lucky we are, to be able to experience and enjoy these extraordinary gifts of nature.

A handful of Sandhill Cranes were the only ones visible at this early hour. We were thrilled to spot one soaring past our car window. Whether they're striding gracefully across a dewy meadow or painting the sky with their thousands, Sandhill Cranes possess a captivating elegance. These magnificent birds congregate in vast flocks, their distinctive, rolling calls echoing through the air.

a whole new ballgame.

Colour re-edit of an old shot from May 2017. Enjoy!

This Osprey dove in the river and ended up with a good bath and a light snack.

ᴇᴅɪᴛɪᴏɴ ᴏɴᴇ.

I found a handful of feathers as I walked around the lake at the Tasmanian Arboretum the other day (while I ate my lunch and tried to get a good shot of a black swan - which I didn't manage to do).

Anyway, seeing as Eileen is curious to know .. ;-)... yes, this was taken on my dining room table. There were areound a dozen feathers together on a small white dish, and the background you can see is a fluffy white 'end' on one of the feathers.

I left a 'message' space to add a pic of them all (before I cropped) when I got a minute, and then forgot to do it... now done. It's from a totally different angle, but it shows how going 'macro' can change things. Oh... and photoshop and a bit of colour saturation, of course.. :-)

Thank you all for your visits, and the lovely comments and invitations!!

This is our little cousin, Elliott, enjoying his own miniature cake last weekend for his 1st birthday. I love his expression as he gets a handful of that frosting in his fingers.

This is the first time this beautiful bird has made it to Santa Clara county and only one of a handful of times it has appeared in Northern California.

A breeding adult. Only seen a handful of these birds this season, suspect the drought was the cause of their absence.

Went strawberry eating - er I mean - picking - this one was almost the size of my Oscar's hand.

Another one from the archives since I've totally lost my photography mojo lately. I've hardly taken any photos in months and barely even a handful with the new Nikon Z5 camera that I got at Christmas, I honestly just don't feel motivated. Partly the weather hasn't been nice enough with the weekends regularly being rainy or lacking any decent light until more recently. Now the sunnier weather has finally made an appearance but still I don't feel like pulling out the camera or going through the frustration of trying to figure out the Z5. With spring flowers popping up everywhere, I'm feeling a sense of pressure and anxiety to get out there and get back to photography and I'm surprised and embarrassed to admit, it's becoming more like dread and obligation. I never expected to feel this way about photography but lately, along with most other things, it just fills me with anxiety, frustration, and a lack of self-worth. I seem to feel like that about everything these days.

Sunrise over Aberdeen Harbour with the Orkney - Shetland Ferry and a handful of Oil & Gas supply vessels moored up.

A handful of units led by Union Pacific SD70AH No. 8846 eases down the grade at East Portal, Colorado with the snow capped continental divide in the background on May 12, 2015.

So I lied earlier. I can't help snapping pics of this bridge. It's a bit of an addiction I think.

It was iPhone week over here. I might have a handful of shots on my SLR but I haven't even downloaded them. Not too mention it has been fun to play with all those cool apps.

Slow shutter app for this one.

Bit of a mass upload to be tucked behind this one :)

I only took a handful of P&LE pictures when they were around because I focused more on quantity on roads like Conrail. Back then, I thought it was insane to "waste" time on the P&LE or B&LE when I was in the Pittsburgh area. I did manage to ride the last P&LE commuter train along with my dad and a good friend of ours (and great photographer), Jim Marcus, that passed away several years ago. The day we rode it, he pointed out that there was a great shot off the telephone pole at the station at Beaver PA. My dad climbed it for a shot of the commuter train, but I never got to try it. When I was looking through a Malinoski box, low and behold...he was up on that very pole for a freight! I guess this is real "pole hugger" shot.! If only we could go back in time.....

With a handful of cars for the CSX interchange, Madison Railroad's GP8 navigates the connection between their former PRR (original Madison Railroad, one of Indiana's first railroads) line and the Ohio & Mississippi crossing (later B&O) at North Vernon, Indiana.

The crossing has been modernized in recent years with OWL diamonds installed and the hand-thrown semaphore removed and replaced with a complete interlocking.

I have a handful of what I think are amazing shots of my favorite mountain from here, I opted for the tight shot for now. this was taken as I was leaving and before I got to the climb down the mountain was gone, it's just that fast up there.

The moniker Summerland came to be in 1886 when Major Edward

S.Ingraham noted how beautiful the flowers were here on the Eastern meadow in the summer months, I was too late for the blooms, but (dang) the peaks were amazing. :-)

I am concerned about the weather, but I'm thinking of retrying Summerland to Ohanapecosh Park in the morning if anyone is interested in going. We are running out of time for the year here. (working this weekend again)

A handful of factors lead to CN 568 departing Kitchener 3 hours later than normal, and in November this is really not what you want to happen. There was about an hour left of daylight when they passed Baden here, and with work at Alpine Solutions we could kiss goodbye to any more daylight shots on this chase.

This is 'Old Neptune' Public House in Whitstable, Kent. It is one of only a handful of pubs to be found on the beaches of Britain.

Like much of Whitstable beach, the site of the Old Neptune was probably occupied by a boatyard workshop which was washed away in Estuary storms and gales.....

In 1853 the Old Neptune Beer House suffered serious structural damage when an exceptionally high tide combined with a northerly gale washed away her foundations. Another great storm in 1883 resulted in the wrecking of several vessels awaiting repair along the shore. The Neptune, although spared this time was used as a temporary morgue to receive bodies of those killed in the storm.

Finally in 1897 the old wooden building was completely washed away by another great storm.. The Old Neptune was rebuilt using timber reclaimed from the original structure and several other cottages that had also been destroyed.

Although the building has warped and twisted over the years, the timber structure seems to accommodate movement as can be seen in the window frames and sloping floors.....

Thanks for visiting.. ..

Cosa sono i millenni? Una manciata di tempo. Polvere in confronto a un unico sguardo dell’eternità.

Hermann Hesse

I promise that you'll never find another like me

I know that I'm a handful, baby, uh

I know I never think before I jump

And you're the kind of guy the ladies want

(And there's a lot of cool chicks out there)

I know that I went psycho on the phone

I never leave well enough alone

And trouble's gonna follow where I go

(And there's a lot of cool chicks out there)

But one of these things is not like the others

Like a rainbow with all of the colors

Baby doll, when it comes to a lover

I promise that you'll never find another like

Me-e-e, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

I'm the only one of me

Baby, that's the fun of me

Eeh-eeh-eeh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

You're the only one of you

Baby, that's the fun of you

And I promise that nobody's gonna love you like me-e-e

I know I tend to make it about me

I know you never get just what you see

But I will never bore you, baby

(And there's a lot of lame guys out there)

And when we had that fight out in the rain

You ran after me and called my name

I never wanna see you walk away

(And there's a lot of lame guys out there)

'Cause one of these things is not like the others

Livin' in winter, I am your summer

Baby doll, when it comes to a lover

I promise that you'll never find another like

Me-e-e, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

I'm the only one of me

Let me keep you company

Eeh-eeh-eeh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

You're the only one of you

Baby, that's the fun of you

And I promise that nobody's gonna love you like me-e-e

I'm the only one of me (I'm the only one of me)

A handful of Chestnut Teal drakes stirred the stillness of the dark pond, splashing with flair just out of reach of the afternoon light. I waited, hoping for that iconic fleeting shimmer of iridescent wing, but they kept mostly to the shadows. This was one of the best glimpses they offered me.
