Amsterdamsche Vishandel Anno 1938. Open since the early part of last century, Amsterdamsche Vishandel Anno 1938 is a fine example of a friendly old-school Amsterdam fish shop. Everything is vintage about this place, and it is the perfect place to stop in for some Dutch specialties like herring or crispy fried kibbeling.

I keep so busy making amateur anybody-can-participate music and art that I seldom find time to consume great art done by highly trained people. This evening friends arm-twisted me into going to hear Handel's Messiah at Emory University. As soon as I saw the splendid organ, my fingers itched for the sketchbook in my purse. Sometimes you can both appreciate art and make art at the same time.

The chorus and orchestra were wider than what is shown here, but I ran out of both paper and patience. This was Messiah as orchestrated by Mozart for more instruments than were used during Handel's lifetime. (So we learned from the program notes.)

A little ironic that the instrument that dominates my sketch is the one instrument in the hall that wasn't used during the performance.

Although these suites were written for the harpsichord, I find there is only so much I'm able to take of the metalic plucking of the strings of the instrument compared to hearing them performed on a modern piano.

With us traveled a gentleman named Klaus, who had already undertaken the Nile tour ten times or more. This is not surprising... a combination of a Nile cruise and a beach holiday at the Red Sea is ultimately not so expensive. Furthermore, one is well taken care of, and there is always something interesting to see. Klaus, alongside our experienced tour guide, was a reliable source of information on when and where to pay a little baksheesh to get a bit more comfort. He also possessed extensive knowledge of Egyptian antiquities and took the liberty to explore them on his own, those not included in the offered standard excursions.

The large Nile lock at Esna slows down the entire Nile shipping. Because here the ships have to throttle their speed to line up for the lock passage. A suitable opportunity for daring young fellows to attach themselves to the ship's bollards and be towed along. Then an entertaining spectacle unfolds: the young men offer their wares from below, the tourists shout from above what they want, a plastic bag with the goods flies up and another with the payment goes down. Klaus had told us in advance about this type of trading and said it was very entertaining. I was looking forward to taking some beautiful photos. The men had eyes like hawks: even if only my nose tip protruded over the railing, I was immediately loudly offered a towel.

However, this trade is not only entertaining, but there is always a spark of bitter truth behind it. The ordinary population really has to toil for their livelihood. Inflation is high, and jobs are scarce. Therefore, everyone is looking for additional sources of income. A towel for 10 euros may not be expensive for us, but these 10 euros are far more than what many earn in a day in the countryside.

This is a recording of remarkable insight and sensitivity combined with amazing technical prowess. Ms Smirnova is able to produce colours and nuances which Händel, who only knew these as played on a harpsichord, would enjoy.

This is an impressive performance by someone who divides his time between the jazz and classical repertoire.

The Veerhaven is one of the many port basins in Rotterdam, located between Willemskade and Westerkade in the classic Scheepvaartkwartier. It is located on the north side of the Nieuwe Maas and not far from the Euromast.

The Veerhaven takes its name from the ferry service to Katendrecht on the south side of the Nieuwe Maas, which was established in the 15th century. Until the Willemsbrug came into use in 1878, this was the only connection between the north and south embankment of the Nieuwe Maas. The ferry service from the “Heen en Weer” shipping company operated until 1968 when the metro came in to service.

The Veerhaven was managed by the Royal Rowing and Sailing Association “De Maas” from 1900 to circa 1980 and was also used by the members to moor their yachts, clippers (a.k.a.: de Bruine Vloot) and sail boats. Along the quay are characteristic houses such as the former offices of the Steenkolen Handels Vereniging (SHV) and Van Uden. Also of architectural interest is the De Maas building (1908), built in Jugendstil, designed by architects Barend Hooijkaas jr. And Michiel Brinkman. Almost all buildings around and near the Veerhaven are listed buildings.

Technical stuff

This is a nine shot panorama. Handheld and shot in one continuous row. I used the Fujifilm X-E3 and 16-55mm set at 500ISO, f8.0, ranging between 1/120-1/180 at 16 mils.

Post-production started with selecting 9 photo of the 12 in the series. The initial merge was done using PS CC. This resulted is an almost flawless pano. It needed some fiddling is some small places. You would probably not have seen it; but I will. So,…

After the basics were fine, I entered the Lab Color mode in PS. This is a great tool for balancing the colour toning of sunset shots. I worked channel “a” and “b”. I used a masking filter to focus the effects in certain parts of the image. I furthermore, converted the shot – back again – to the RGBs mode and did some work on the lighting conditions in some parts, the texture and ran it passed a High Pass filter set at 36% opacity. Finally, I added some copyright signs (in PS). The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the fact that my photos were frequently copied. So, don't bother commenting on that.

The original photo is wallpaper size: 16038 x 6148 pixels. This resulted in a file of roughly 1,6 GB. I resized the image for Flickr to 3000 x 1150 pixels.
