"Shon Papri" is what it is called locally. When we were kids, we would see such local vendors walking on the streets and sell such items but they have almost become extinct these days.
The only decent Shon Papri you get is from the indian sweet giant "Haldirams".

Further upstream, on the river-side of a flood wall, was a labyrinth of tiny streets of dwellings part unmortared brick, part canvas, each street end having a water pump and pristine little shrine. Always the smell of sewerage. The water pumps were the centres of the communities, children splashing each other, clothes being washed, hooded crows and dogs vying for ownership . Each time I reached the river I had grown a tail of children, all delighted and nervous, parents smiling proudly, men looking darkly suspiciously. Everyone was respectful towards me but I didn’t linger. I was invading and who knows what their mixed feelings might be. The atmosphere was strangely peaceful. I felt no stress, bitterness or desperation in these slum dwellers. There was no mocking or jeering. They had made homes and lived together utterly simply in a world removed from the filthy tents I’d passed, from the busy Dickensian streets of Old Delhi, let alone from Gurgaon with its “unstoppable Indians”.
I made my way back to the street and called a rickshaw because by then my presence was well known and so many people had come out to stare at me; I needed to extract myself. I was driven along a perfectly reasonable street except that concrete storm water pipes had been left here and there, all of them now with a curtain of rags at each end, someone’s home. The same crazy old man again offered to be my guide.
Safely back near Chandni Chowk, I gladly paid the old rickshaw rider what he asked for. At least that money would somehow percolate into his community. Upstairs in Haldiram’s restaurant with its shiny perfectly clean floor tiles, glass and chromium, bright pictures of masala dosas and ice-cream sundaes, families with kids dressed in primary colours and sequins, trendy teenagers dressed off-the-peg, I felt shaken, somehow chastened by the experiences of the day. Strange as this may sound, I felt I had visited an ancient place. Seeing or not seeing the temple was irrelevant. The insect eyes of the dancing deities made more sense to me now: our lives are governed by un- human mechanisms. It simply doesn’t seem so, except in India.

Susan's cousin, Dr. Tom Philipose( extreem left) brought a group of 16 friends, many of them senior citizens and tour guides themselves in Washington on a tour of India, 10 days in Kerala and 9 days in and around Delhi. This gave me a chance to enact my life's fantasy of being guide to an enlightened group of tourist visiting India. Unfortunately, my job keeps me on my toes and I had to beg leave for two crucial days. But on the whole, this was an unforgettable experience. Here is the group at the McDonald's at Mathura. Susan is on extreme right. Though they were thrilled to see the Mac and the big Yellow M, they loved Haldiram's most. In the coming days I'd be posting a few shots from this trip.
Chole Bhature has achieved the distinction of being the signature Delhi dish. No matter how good the skills, no one below north India can recreate the perfect masala of chole and texture of bhaturas that you get here. Even mass market chains like Haldiram's and Bikanerwala have perfected it.

this is one of the yummiest deshi sweet..in Bengali it is called jilipi.....the spiral filled with sugar syrup..this pic was taken in Haldiram,Ballygaung on 13th november,08..
As almost everyone in our group was strictly vegetarian, we limited our meals to this Haldirams outlet. Haldirams is a famous Delhi based sweets and snacks store, and this is their Calcutta branch. Apart from those oh so delicious Bengali sweets and other confections, they also sold some heavy snacks, perfect for a light meal. (May 2009)
