The Himba are indigenous people living in Kaokoland in northern Namibia. They are semi-nomadic and are considered the last (semi-) nomadic people of Namibia. Himba women are famous for covering themselves with otjize paste, a cosmetic mixture of butterfat and ochre pigment, to cleanse the skin over long periods due to water scarcity and protect themselves from the extremely hot and dry climate of the Kaokoland. The cosmetic mixture, often perfumed with the aromatic resin of the omuzumba shrub, gives their skin and hair plaits a distinctive orange or red-tinge characteristic, as well as texture and style. Otjize is considered a highly desirable aesthetic beauty cosmetic, symbolizing earth's rich red color and blood the essence of life, and is consistent with the Himba ideal of beauty. Hairstyle and jewelry play a significant role, it indicates age and social status within their community.

The original was black and white, but I found that I wanted to have a shot that was more than just black and white. I found another shot where she was looking at the camera the same way and copied the eyes into this photograph. He lips were a nude color, so I just colored them red in photoshop. That ended up taking me a lot longer than I had anticipated, it was hard making it look like lipstick!

Selection of African Art on display at the African Union Conference Centre, Addis Ababa, all poorly labeled! There are labels identifying which member nation donated the work but nothing about the artist nor information about his/her background. There is a signature T. William(?) in the bottom right corner which Google doesn't seem to know anything about either.
