There are about 80 different species of mangrove trees. All of these trees grow in areas with low-oxygen soil, where slow-moving waters allow fine sediments to accumulate. Mangrove forests only grow at tropical and subtropical latitudes near the equator because they cannot withstand freezing temperatures.

Many mangrove forests can be recognized by their dense tangle of prop roots that make the trees appear to be standing on stilts above the water. This tangle of roots allows the trees to handle the daily rise and fall of tides, which means that most mangroves get flooded at least twice per day.  The roots also slow the movement of tidal waters, causing sediments to settle out of the water and build up the muddy bottom.

Mangrove forests stabilize the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides. The intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fishes and other organisms seeking food and shelter from predators.

This portrait captures the Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis), a master of the skies, in a moment of stillness. Taken at the Avian Reconditioning Center in Apopka, Florida, the image focuses on the bird's striking features, showcasing its sharp red eyes and smooth, gray plumage. The Mississippi Kite, known for its aerial agility and graceful flight, is presented here in a rare, serene moment, allowing us to appreciate its understated beauty up close.

As a photographer, my goal is to not only document but also to convey the essence of the subject. In this case, the calm and focused demeanor of the Mississippi Kite is juxtaposed with the knowledge of its dynamic life in the air. This portrait is a testament to the quiet power and elegance of these raptors, a reminder of the diverse beauty found in the avian world. Capturing such moments is a step towards understanding and appreciating the intricacies of nature.

One of my happy spots. This is why the bicycle is so special. You could drive a car to this place and park, but it would feel so awkward and artificial...I rode 9 miles to arrive quietly and unobtrusively. And yes, I have encountered pheasants here.

Storm drain on Shell Beach.

Finding the dead female pheasant today prompted me to take another picture of this sign, about 1.5 miles from the spot where the bird was hit.

Personalizing the wild creatures seldom seen (out of sight, out of mind) by bringing representatives to people young and old is a good way to build curiosity and public interest and support for wildlife conservation and habitat protection. Some people come out to visit the city property and others are living in care homes or meet the Wildlife Ambassadors shown on this wall when they are learning in school classrooms. The bulletin board next to the staff door and workspace has the names given to the animals living in the care of the Nature Center after suffering injury or other unfortunate circumstance.
