Haagse Harry statue to be unveiled
Haagse Harry is the popular Dutch comic book series created by Marnix Rueb in which the main character speaks a phonetic Hague dialect. Marnix Rueb, the creator and mastermind behind the Haagse Harry comic book figure, died in October 2014.
With his local Hague dialect and a particular sense of humour, Haagse Harry became the most famous ‘Haganees’ in the Netherlands. He gives a tough but fair running commentary on everything happening in The Hague.
The Hague Culture Award
The more than 3,000 kilogram* statue was financed by Rueb’s heirs with the prize money from The Hague Culture Award. Marnix Rueb won the award posthumously in April 2015 for his complete oeuvre.
The artist Bouke Schuemie was responsible for designing the statue and Keramiekatelier Struktuur68 carried out the design.
*It turned ot to be about 5000 kilo

Haagse Harry is een Nederlandse stripreeks, getekend door Marnix Rueb. De serie debuteerde in 1991 en draait rond een inwoner van Den Haag die fonetisch Haags dialect praat.
Haagse Harry woont, zoals zijn naam al aangeeft, in Den Haag. Hij is werkloos, grof in de mond, maar heeft uiteindelijk een hart van goud. Wel is hij regelmatig agressief als relsupporter van ADO Den Haag.
Bouke Schuemie, kunstenaar en oude vriend van Rueb, maakte een 3D-versie van de stripfiguur compleet met opgestoken middelvinger (op zijn rug). Rob Daenen van keramiekwerkplaats Struktuur 68 heeft dit ontwerp vervolgens uitgewerkt in klei.

The Ciy Hall (1995) was one of the devices used to rejuvenate the Den Haag inner city. It’s nick name is Ice palace (IJspaleis) and the front part of the dashing atrium on display here is the core of the building. All the public functions of the municipality are positioned here.
The building (designed by Richard Meier) was controversial. During a design competition it won over the more mundane design of OMA (Rem Koolhaas). After the opening the late Haagse Harry the self proclaimed cartoon vox populi of Den Haag said about it:
'Die amtenare zitte in 'n glanzend wit palès van vieâhhondartmijoen te besluìte dat 'r gein cente zèn om mèn krotwauning te reinauvere! Mindâh stadhuìs; meâh huìze in de stad!'
Important in the political process that lead to the decision to realize the Ciy Hall was alderman (wethouder) Adri Duivesteijn who later had to resign because of a conflict in the PvdA (labour party) about the financial risk management of the project. He wrote "Het Haagse stadhuis, bouwen in een slangenkuil" (The The Hague City Hall - building in a snake pit) about the building project, an interesting read. What Jan Shaeffer was in the Dutch political arena to affordable public housing, Adri Duivesteijn was to architecture and urban development of The Hague and Almere.

After the restaurant we popped in to the Escher museum. And on the way back to the station entered City Hall to check if there were Escheresque things to be captured. They seemed to be not really there. But you never know, it's all in the mind and its shifting expectations ;-)

Het standbeeld van Haagse Harry aan de Grote Markt, heeft een Kerstmanoutfit van mantel en muts gekregen.

Haagse Harry is een Nederlandse stripreeks, getekend door Marnix Rueb. De serie debuteerde in 1991 en draait rond een inwoner van Den Haag die fonetisch Haags dialect praat.
Het standbeeld van Haagse Harry is ontworpen door kunstenaar Bouke Schuemie en geboetseerd door Rob Daenen. Het is een eerbetoon aan de creatie van illustrator Marnix Rueb (1955-2014).
Rueb bedacht het stripfiguur na een tijdje in de Schilderswijk te hebben gewoond. Harry is een werkeloze Hagenees met een dikke buik en een matje in zijn nek. Hij draagt altijd een trainingspak met witte gympen en dwaalt lekker door de straat rond terwijl hij commentaar geeft in het Haags op alles en iedereen. Begin jaren ’90 kreeg Rueb veel bekendheid met zijn stripkarakter door zijn fonetische spelling die hij voor het plat-Haagse dialect ontwikkelde. Dit is ook terug te vinden op het T-shirt van het standbeeld met de tekst: ‘’kap nâh!! Lekkâh belangrèk’’, wat zich vertaalt naar ‘’kap nou!! Lekker belangrijk.’’ Hij heeft in totaal 5 albums gemaakt over Haagsche Harry.

Tijdens de nabewerking zag ik dat op de voorste bank een lange tekst in het Arabisch te lezen was.
Jan Hoogland/ heeft deze tekst voor mij vertaald. Waarvoor mijn hartelijke dank.
Hier staat naar alle waarschijnlijkheid: "Nu leven in Nederland is als de dood, en alle Arabieren zijn rotzakken"

Stond ik daar het nieuwe standbeeld van Haagse Harry te bewonderen komen ineens René Bom, nachtburgemeester, en onze minister president Mark Rutte aangelopen.
Samen gingen ze op de foto het Haagse Harry.

De Volharding heeft jaren lang leeggestaan maar wordt nu opgeknapt. Er gaan geruchten dat er op de begane grond en in de kelder horeca gevestigd gaat worden. Men is hier op tegen lees ik op sociale media. Het zou niet duurzaam zijn.
Maar wat is er wel duurzaam aan de Grote Markt?
Grote Markt Den Haag. Gebouw 'De Volharding', ontworpen door J.W.E.(Jan) Buijs in 1927. Stijl: Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. De laatste restauratie vond plaats in 1988. Het gebouw was het hoofdkantoor van de Coöperatie 'De Volharding'. Door het gebruik van glas en glazen bouwstenen was 'De Volharding' één van de eerste voorbeelden van glas- en lichtarchitectuur. Het gebouw kwam in 1988 in handen van Randstad Uitzendbureau.

Een Haags Icoon, de stripheld Haagse Harry, die vanmiddag geplaatst is op de Grote Markt in Den Haag wordt officieel onthuld door Nachburgemeester Rene Bom.
Enjoy this rather exclusive look at this marvel of architecture. Of course, you're not allowed to take pictures inside this building. I wonder why? I was told that the architect doesn't allow photographs taken here. Then again, there are many things that aren't allowed these days. The question is: what's he got to hide? I rather liked this.
