We were so glad to finally get a little closer to a female Rock Ptarmigan perched on a rock when this male flew right in and landed amongest us - - he was concerned if we were moving in on his mate - - but it was photos only of course ! Awesome surprise he was .....

This is the female Rock Ptarmigan that we had spotted and were sneaking up upon when the male (previous picture) came in to see what we were up to. Svalbard Norway - 80 degrees latitude at this stage of our trip - - our 10 day boat trip had started in Longyearbyen (78 degrees latitude).
Robin so loved the Wind when it helped him traverse the arduous journey to his summer home. However, once he finally came to rest after so very many days of travel, he was weary and wished only for stillness and quietude. But the wind loved to blow, and it did; perturbed and addled, Robin loudly chirped cursing the Wind, to which it took great offense and a decidedly deep breath and with a regretful sigh, it blew him away.
I'm just so in love with the "Chad" skin from Clef de Peau on TheMeshProject "Soft" male mesh head. Hehehe. :D

Platanthera hyperborea (Orchidaceae) 196 21
Platanthera hyperborea occurs in Iceland and Greenland and has been reported in Alaska, Manitoba, and Akiminski Island.
This orchid can be extremely variable throughout its range but typically has a short, leafy stem and dense flower spike of small, yellowish-green flowers. The lip has a wider base that tapers to a blunt tip and the cylindrical spur may be the length of the lip or shorter. This orchid can be found in a variety of habitats from shaded woods to sun-lit meadows.

August is always a time of beautiful sunsets and sunrises in the North of Russia. My flickr friend reminded me the name of the mystic country in the north. I guess this name is suitable for the picture...

All marble sculptures in Lower Park of Peterhof are covered in wooden boxes for winter but not the gilded sculptures of Great Cascade.
Having good time on camping trip. No school, no chores, no phones ringing, no emails. Nothing. Just a nice quiet place with my lovely fox Kalli. She ate her roasted sausage and felt asleep just by the campfire. Sweet dreams sweetheart! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

The male Svalbard rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta hyperborea), in the high midnight sun, really late last night ツ
What a wonderful ending of a wonderful week on Svalbard it was!
First I went on a lovely evening cruise (after a day glacier cruise as well), with a three course dinner, at a stunningly calm ocean in abnormally nice and warm weather for Svalbard (the last two days has been the warmest days in a long time, or ever, up there).
On the evening cruise I also randomly met two of my new photography friends that I spent the first days together with, on the photography workshop up there. Fun!
Afterwards, I joined a talented photographer from Northern Norway that I met on a whale safari the day before - enjoyng the stunning weather and photographing little auks and the ptarmigan couple that suddenly were in front of our car, until late at night. The female was also beautiful in the beautiful backlight, so I will show her later on. It was really fun, since I only had photos of a male in fog from the start of the trip..
Now I´m waiting on my last plane back home. What a trip it has been!!

Sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis), ducks including mallards (Ánas platyrhýnchos), and a few snow geese (Chén hyperbórea) begin their cold-weather forage at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. The Chupadera Mountains and, farther back, Italian Peak of the Magdelena Mountains rise above the wetlands of the Rio Grande Valley.
Great Basin bog orchid, Platanthera tescamnis, California, White Mountains, Marble Creek, Hammil Valley drainage, elevation 1660 m (5445 ft).
This species was previously confused with P. sparsiflora and P. hyperborea until its recognition in 2006. It is found mainly in the intermountain region and adjacent areas of the western United States. Here in the White Mountains it tends to be limited to the immediate vicinity of the most dependable long-term water sources.
Also visible here are meadow paintbrush (Castilleja miniata subsp. miniata), wiregrass (Juncus balticus subsp. ater), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis subsp. pratensis), Nevada blue eyed grass (Sisyrinchium halophilum), and seep monkeyflower (Erythranthe guttata).
Snow Bunting is another bird that I managed to photograph in Northumberland but I rarely see them in the Pennines. They winter in relatively small numbers around the coasts of Britain, with very few wintering on inland hills. This is a young male, part of a small flock that were feeding on the beach close to where we were staying. They seemed to be finding plenty to eat, which surprised me as they eat mainly seeds in winter, but the only plant I could see was washed up Kelp (Laminaria hyperborea) which reproduces by spores, not seeds.
