NATIVE URBAN - Bloemendaal Hoodie

One of my favorite birds and I was lucky to catch them both swimming together. Both have their hoods relaxed which gives them a different appearance, but they are beautiful birds!

Taken 29 March 2017 at Huntley Meadows Park, Virginia

Hooded Plover (Thinornis cucullatus) Endangered

A couple of bird images from a visit to Point Addis on this day in 2018.

Robbery Lake, Golden Gate Park, SF

The first Hooded crow (Corvus cornix) that I have seen in Hampshire. Slightly sharpened with Topaz as the eye was soft.

A birder I met said it was only the second he had ever seen in Hampshire.

According to the RSPB "Hooded crows can be found in N and W Scotland, N Ireland and on the Isle of Man, where it replaces the carrion crow. Outside the breeding season it is found across the breeding range and is also found, but scarce in E Scotland and even rarer down the eastern side of England. Most of the winter visitors come from Scandinavia."

A new species for this kid, the Hooded crow. Also known as a Hoodie, Scald Crow and if taken in Scotland, it is considered to be a Scottish crow…In Ireland, it is an Irish crow. Like the crows found in the US, these guys are very camera shy. Point anything in their direction and they are gone! In this case, I was taking photos near the edge of a 100-150’ cliff when he suddenly appeared from somewhere below. I believe he was totally surprised to see me standing there, camera already pointing in his direction. A second later he utilized gravity and the 30+ mile per hour winds to jump off the cliff and disappear, his exit perfectly matched his entrance.

The animal kingdoms version of magic…now you see me, now you don’t!

Male Hooded Merganser shows off his best stuff as he tries to impress the lady. As he rears back, he gets off a kindof vibrating "froglike croak". They were a little less predictable this season than last - I think I only got one really good session with this behavior, on a cold overcast morning. What a kick to watch them, and how lucky am I.

Art Deco-style jaywalker deterrent...spotted in Matlock Bath earlier this year also the front end of the preceding Selfie image.

Zuiko 45mm f1.2

Looks like it could use a rechrome. Lots of pits. Hot August Niles car show.

I don't usually shoot the whole car, preferring to focus on the details.

Niles, California.

Looks like he has a pine cone stuck in his head

Hooded Crow or Hoodie (Corvus cornix).

Lots of cloud cover when I took this shot and of course, the female does not have as dramatic colouring as the male. Her hood will expand out similar shape to the male's she was busy fishing at the time and flattened it prior to a dive.

Corvids are one of my favourite species always full of character and mischief and none more so than this little beauty the hoodie.

Such a shame to hear that the RSPB of all people are culling their English counterparts. Whilst I understand the need to protect endangered species, in this case the Curlew, the use of traps outlawed in many other countries is not acceptable. The RSPB should concentrate on rebalancing nature by providing natural habitat for nesting birds and reintroducing and protecting the crows natural predators.

Many thanks to all those who take the time to comment on my photos. It is truly appreciated.

The drawstring on my favorite winter wear. A cotton, lined, zipper front hooded sweatshirt. I can use it as outer wear or as a layer under a windproof shell. I used my 75mm square template to frame this shot. I stacked a dozen images to get detail in the string and shirt. HMM and thanks for all of your faves, views and comments.
