Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant on the SDGs to the President of Nigeria, Mr. Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator and chair of UNDG, Mr. Roberto Oliveira, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Timor-Leste and Dr. Alaa Murabit, UN SDG Advocate.
‘The SDGs in Action: Eradicating Poverty and Promoting Inclusive Prosperity in a Changing World,’ a high level side event organized by the UN Development Group, in conjunction with the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2017), discussed how countries at various stages of development, including those faced with complex situations such as violent conflict and fragility are accelerating efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The theme of the HLPF, ‘Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world’ challenges the UN and Member States to hold true to the 2030 Agenda pledge to leave no one behind and to reach the furthest behind first.
Mr. Achim Steiner, UNDG Chair and UNDP Administrator highlighted on the need to pursue an integrated approach versus “cherry-picking” priority areas, where the UN can help identify synergies and trade-offs in different country contexts to determine interventions that yield benefits across several SDGs.
“The critical importance of leaving no one behind and reaching the furthest behind first: here the UN can help countries better understand and address inequalities in all their forms”.

13 July 2017 - New York - Mr. Achim Steiner, Administrator, UNDP. Agenda 2030 pledges to leave no one behind and to strive reaching the furthest left behind first. While the past two decades saw an impressive progress in scaling up global HIV responses, these gains must be sustained and there is still a need to reach those who have been left behind. Very often inadequate laws and policies criminalize and perpetuate stigma, discrimination and violence against people living with HIV and other key populations, fail to consider the realities and rights of adolescents, women, girls and other vulnerable populations, or hamper access to affordable quality medicines.
The Global Commission on HIV and the Law, an independent body of eminent leaders convened by UNDP on behalf of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS, released its report in 2012. Since its release, UNDP – in collaboration with governments, civil society, and UN partners - has worked in 88 countries to support Member States in the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations. Taking stock of these follow up efforts is an important opportunity to assess progress and challenges and identify opportunities and partnerships to scale-up human rights programming to end AIDS, TB and malaria and combat other diseases, as envisioned by SDG3 and other health-related targets, while ensuring that no one is left behind. © UNDP / Freya Morales

Findings from the 2019 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) demonstrate more clearly than ever that labeling countries – or even households – as rich and poor is an oversimplification.
The new data sheds light on disparities in how people experience poverty, revealing vast inequalities among countries and among the poor themselves.

New York, 17 July 2017 - Mr. Roberto Oliveira, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Timor-Leste.
