Discovered by Mendana in 1595
James Cook, Dominica April 1774: "We were attacked by such Violent Squalls from the high lands, that we were within a few yards of being driven against the rocks. After escaping this danger we anchored in the entrance of the Bay. We had no soon anchored then about 30 or 40 of the Natives came round us in a Doz'n or fourteen canoes to trade."
Georg Forster also on board: "Als wir aber eben drehten, um einzulaufen, sausste ein starker Windstoss über die hohen Berge mit solcher Gewalt herab, dass das Schiff ganz auf die Seite zu liegen kam, die mittlere Bramstange verloren ging und wir selbst mit genauer Noth der Gefahr entkamen, an der südlichen Spitze des Havens zu stranden."

Hiva Oa is een eiland in de Stille Oceaan dat deel uitmaakt van de Marquesaseilanden (Frans-Polynesië). Hiva Oa is op één na het grootste eiland in deze archipel. De hoofdstad heet Atuona. Toerisme is er een belangrijke bron van inkomsten.
Zowel de Franse schilder Paul Gauguin als de Belgische zanger Jacques Brel brachten het laatste deel van hun leven op het eiland door. Beiden liggen er, enkele voetstappen van elkaar verwijderd, begraven. Op het eiland bevindt zich een museum dat voor een deel gewijd is aan Gauguin en een ander deel aan Brel.
Hiva Oa is the second largest island in the Marquesas Islands, in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. It is the largest island of the Southern Marquesas group. According to local religion, the gods created the islands as their home.
The island was the final home of French painter Paul Gauguin and Belgian singer Jacques Brel, both of whom are buried in Calvary Cemetery, overlooking Atuona.

This is from the lookout point in Nuku Hiva. Right before you reach Hatihe’u, there is a reconstruction of an ancient village. There are heiaus, huts, petroglyphs, ovens, and all kinds of things. There’s a kings chair and a courtyard for Hula.

Tahuata is het kleinste bewoonde eiland van de Marquesaseilanden, Frans-Polynesië. Het ligt 4 kilometer ten zuiden van het eiland Hiva Oa. Het hoogste punt van het eiland is Mount Amatea die 1050 meter hoog is.

Tahuata is the smallest of the inhabited Marquesas Islands, in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. It is located 4 km to the south of the western end of Hiva Oa, across the Canal du Bordelais, called Ha‘ava in Marquesan.
