Images of Australia 49/100 The Tree of Knowledge.

The Tree of Knowledge, located in the small outback town of Barcaldine, has an iconic place in Australian history.

In the 1870's shearers had to sign a contract to gain employment, but an excess of workers meant that owners were able to decrease the wage of shearers. In 1891, shearers began to go on strike, and this action quickly spread. Strike camps were set up and the tree became a meeting place for the strikers. Violence increased, some shearing sheds were burnt down and the Police took firm action. The strike leaders were arrested and sentenced to prison, lack of food, funds and bad weather caused the strike to be abandoned. Thus, over the years the tree became a symbol of a 'fair go, and fair wages for a fair days work'.

The tree itself is ghost gum and over the years suffered from insect attacks, termites and fungal diseases. Before its final death a small number of trees were grafted from it to keep the tradition alive. The tree itself was preserved and the current memorial built around it.

Editing the photograph as I have, was an attempt to portray both the historical and the current setting of the tree.

Taken from across Hoyt Lake during our bike ride to Delaware Park.

It feels like a brand new day, and I'm pleased to be in it. I am so happy for our country.

Edit: Here is my take on the tone of the campaign and my hopes for our approach moving forward.

London, England

The Natural History Museum in London is a museum exhibiting a vast range of specimens from various segments of natural history. It is one of three major museums on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, the others being the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Natural History Museum's main frontage, however, is on Cromwell Road.

The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, palaeontology and zoology. The museum is a world-renowned centre of research specialising in taxonomy, identification and conservation. Given the age of the institution, many of the collections have great historical as well as scientific value, such as specimens collected by Charles Darwin.

The museum is particularly famous for its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons and ornate architecture—sometimes dubbed a cathedral of nature—both exemplified by the large Diplodocus cast which dominates the vaulted central hall.

The history column is the essential part of a fountain on the Josef-Görres-Platz in the old town of Koblenz. It was presented to the city by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1992 for the 2000th anniversary celebrations. However, it was only completed and handed over to the city on June 1, 2000. The fountain with historical column was created by the sculptor Jürgen Weber. The column, which is 10.59 meters high, weighs 3.6 tons and costs DM 1.25 million, tells the moving 2000-year history of the city of Koblenz in ten images from Roman times to the present day. From 1884 until it was removed shortly after World War II, the Goeben Monument stood on the same site in honor of the Prussian General August Karl von Goeben.

The following events are shown in rows from bottom to top:

Row one: Roman fort settlement. A boat loaded with wine barrels symbolizes the Roman settlement from the 1st to the 5th century.

Row Two: Crown Estates and Conference. Venue Franconian royal court between the 6th and 9th centuries.

Row Three: From the Reich to Electoral Trier. The figures symbolize the affiliation of Koblenz to the Archdiocese of Trier in the 10th to 12th centuries.

Row Four: Crusades / Slave Trade Koblenz in the 12th and 13th centuries, the age of the Crusades.

Row Five: A thriving urban community. Figures with horses represent the thriving city of craftsmen, merchants and ecclesiastical dignitaries from the 13th to the 16th centuries.

Row Six: Thirty Years' War / Witch Mania. The silhouette of the city at the time of the Thirty Years' War and the witch hunt.

Row Seven: French Revolution. Reminiscence of the warlike events during and after the French Revolution around 1800.

Row Eight: Prussian Era. Representation of a mighty fortress and thus Prussian Koblenz in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Row Nine: Destruction 1944. Destroyed Koblenz after the air raids of 1944 in World War II.

Row Ten: A future-oriented cit. Symbolizes the rebuild and future-oriented city of today. (Wikipedia) Koblenz, Germany

I have only the second set of books which is a shame.

Built by farmer John P. Cable in 1867, Cable Mill gristmill is located along the Cade's Cove loop drive in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee. Thanks to National Park Service renovation and maintenance, the mill operates today much as it did nearly 150 years ago, and corn meal ground at the mill can be purchased at the Cade's Cove Visitor Center seasonally.

I posted a shot of this mill from a different perspective earlier, shown in the first comment below. Today's view looks down the flume that carries water to the mill.

This pre- Celtic monument dates back to at least 5,000 BC and some of the stones placed in Astronomical alignment weigh up to 25 tons. Many had to be moved from at least 100 miles away in Wales. An amazing feat of engineering. A new theory is that it also represented a union of almost all Celtic tribes south of Scotland and it makes sense as it would take the work of thousands of people over 100 plus years to build. The side was actually once almost 10 times bigger with an edifice even 5 times larger. Before there were stones the pagans used lodge which may carbon date back as far as 10,000 BC. Easy to reach as day trip from London or via Salisbury, a lovely village town 30 minutes away.

"Of the moral effects of the monuments themselves, standing as they do in the depths of a tropical forest, silent and solemn, strange in design, excellent in sculpture, rich in ornament, differing from the works of any other people, their uses and purposes, their whole history entirely unknown, with hieroglyphics explaining all, but perfectly unintelligible, I shall not pretend to convey any idea. Often the imagination was pained in gazing at them. The tone which pervades the ruins is that of deep solemnity. An imaginative mind might be infected with superstitious feelings."- 1843-John Lloyd Stephens

The ruins of St. John's Episcopal Church in the town of Glen Allan, Washington County, Mississippi, USA. This church was built in the 1850s using slave labor. During the American Civil War, locals removed the stained glass windows to use the lead for bullets. The structure was wrecked by a tornado in 1904, and the ruins now sit among graves of the Greenfield Cemetery. I would dare to say that there are in this photo the two main sites which are visited by any tourist coming for the first time in Shanghai: the Yu Garden (Yuyuan)at the foreground, and the skyline of Pudong at the background, as you can see it from Puxi side. A good synthesis of what Shanghai history is!

Dead Horse Point, Utah

We are looking down from Dead Horse Point upon a gooseneck of the Colorado River while storm clouds pass by in the distance.

We're also looking at roughly 100 million years of geological history. The sandstone at the edge of the Colorado River was laid down during the Pennsylvanian period, perhaps 275 million years ago, while the Navajo sandstone capping the Island in the Sky area in the distance to our right was deposited during the Jurassic period about 175 million years ago. Subsequent sedimentary deposits have been eroded away during the uplift of the Colorado Plateau.

It may be a bit difficult to imagine that USSC #148 at one point operated in the Florida Keys and all along the rest of FECs network, but today (01/30/22), after a significant restoration effort was completed, the glory of the ol' 4-6-2 Pacific lives again, just this time it's on the ex-ACL on what is now SCFE mainline along the southwest shores of Lake Okeechobee.
