swallowtail (papilio machaon) during sunset

Several years ago I discovered the first swallowtails on the outskirts of my home. This one sat on a mild, windless Sunday morning on the blossom of a wild carrot close to the path. In a light drizzle it just didn't want to fly away, so I had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful specimen extensively.

Early in the morning, shortly after 6, on a hill in the southern Eifel. The swallowtails kept making their rounds on the wild carrot. On a picture I got her with the setting moon on a picture.

Swallowtails like to gather for sleeping in the immediate vicinity. The more they fight when it comes to the females. Thus, the butterfly on the left was still relatively fresh, while the right already had lost some colors and had injuries to the wings.

Another picture of the swallowtail, which I photographed on the heights of the South Eifel during the sunrise.

The sun rose in the morning mist and was not very bright for a few minutes.

The problem was the butterfly itself, who was constantly wriggling, while always keeping his wings open in this threatening gesture.

The colors and drawing on the butterfly itself I have achieved through a reflector. In addition, the tonal range of the D810, in contrast to previous cameras is gigantic and works when working in Lightroom real wonders.

For a change, another picture from the “Summer of the Swallowtails 2022”.

The beauty had recently hatched and took off a few minutes after the picture was taken.

It's time to bring one of the many swallowtails from the archive into the light again.

Over the years I've seen this car multiple times, but never got a decent shot of it. I like this shot, but would have asked the owner to remove the signs in the windshield if I could have found him. As you can see, it is in mint condition with a very nice white interior.

Last Friday evening just before dusk, I discovered three swallowtails, who had searched in the immediate vicinity of a common sleeping place. About 1/2 meter next to these two specimens sat a third on a single flower.

On the Saturday before sunrise, I was on the spot and was once again able to take many pictures of these beautiful butterflies.

WHO'S RR IS THIS?

You'd never know it from this picture, but its former Seaboard Coast Line rails now under the Family Lines flag. Amtrak's Boston, MA to Catlettsburg, KY train 67, The Hilltopper, is rolling along with a little help from N&W GP9-885 ahead of F40PH-302. At Petersburg, the train will switch onto N&W rails. And how about that jointed rail?

At the moment it is a pleasure to go with the camera in the garden ... everywhere butterflies on lavender and summer lilac (buddleia). To my surprise, a fresh swallowtail of the 2nd generation flew for this year, as always on time for the summer full moon.

Fall River, MA

History of this gorgeous building is below my short reason for the photo.

I have been in contact with someone who graduated from BMC Durfee High School back in 1961. He is currently retired living in Costa Rica and writing a book of stories of his youth while growing up and causing trouble in Fall River during those years. He asked for a photo of the school for a cover of his self-published book. I was never really happy with shots I took of the building years ago and this was the perfect time to get the portrait framed shots of the clock tower that he specifically requested. But while I was there I couldn't help but get one of my over-the-top shots while in my hometown of Fall River. My Dad has stories of he and my grandfather making parts for the telescope that was in the observatory. I've never been inside though. After its restoration it is now used as a probate and family court.

The history:

"The building was built as a donation from Mrs. Mary B. Young to the people of the city of Fall River, in memory of her son Bradford Matthew Chaloner Durfee, who had died at a young age in 1872, leaving a sizable inheritance.

George A. Clough, a Boston architect was chosen to design the building. Ground was broken in August 1883. The first story of the school is constructed of native Fall River Granite, while the stone of the upper portions is from Mason, New Hampshire. The new high school was formally dedicated to the city on June 15, 1887.

The building occupies a commanding position atop a hill in the city's Highlands neighborhood, and is visible from miles around. Even today, the school's sports teams are known as the "Durfee Hilltoppers".

Recent history

In 1978, the city opened a new, much larger high school in the north end, also named "B.M.C. Durfee High School". The old high school remained vacant until the early 1990s when it was taken over by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, for use as a Probate Court House. The restoration was completed in the mid-1990s. The Southeast branch of the Massachusetts Housing Court is located in the building as well."

I've seen '39 coupes many times, but this is the first 2 door sedan I remember seeing. Really cool wheels which are the main giveaway that this car isn't stock and may well be a sleeper. The headlights have been modified and I think I prefer the stock ones. Still, all in all I really love it.

Take II, hand-held panorama hence the minor distortion

This eastbound UP stack train comes over a hill and will now drop downgrade into Cheyenne on 10-29-16.

There might be some debate about this being the most radical car at the show, but there is certainly no doubt that it is the most radical and eye catching paint job. My love for yellow lives on.

Built in 1974, the Marquette Hilltopper is 140' long and has a breath of 38'. Her loaded draft is 11' and she has 4500 horsepower. Took this from the Dayton, Kentucky floodwall. Cincinnati's Riverside Drive makes up the background. The smokestack upper right, was the Cincinnati Water Works Eden Park pumping station.

A small number of passenger await the eastbound Amtrak Hilltopper on the last day of the train operation, Sept. 30, 1979. (Scanned from Kodak Tri-X negative film)
