Millions of ice crystals glint down from 3 to 5 mile high cirrostratus haze to form the 22º halo. The sharp inner edge is red tinged. Beyond, the halo fades gradually away. The sky Inside is dark because no crystals can glint there.

Tanzanite - a variety of the mineral zoisite. Happy Macro Monday! 😊
The tanzanite stone shown here was given to me by a good friend who purchased it as a loose stone during his travels abroad. I had it custom set into this 1” long white gold and diamond pendant by Lucas at ‘Creations Lucas’ in Ottawa.
Zoisite: “Zoisite is a silicate of calcium and aluminum with the composition Ca2Al3(Si3O7)(SiO4)(O,OH)2.” [1].
Tanzanite: “From deep in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania comes tanzanite, a gemstone with only a single known source that has become one of the most intriguing and desirable precious gemstones of modern times. It is a variety of the mineral zoisite and varies from blue, to violet, or purple in colour. Described as ‘a geological phenomenon’, tanzanite is 1,000 times more rare than diamonds” [2].
“In 1967 a Masai tribesman discovered a unique variety of the mineral zoisite at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, east Africa,” explains Melvyn Kirtley, chief gemologist at Tiffany & Co.“ The find was momentous. It was the first transparent blue gemstone discovered in hundreds of years, and represented a whole new species of gemstone” [3].
Originally only available in either Tanzania or Tiffany’s, (in 1968 they were the first jeweller to introduce tanzanite), Tanzanite jewellery is extremely valuable and coveted, both for the gem’s rarity, as well as its beauty” [2]. “Although only discovered in the late 1960s, it has quickly established itself as one of the premier gemstones in the world” [4].

This is my son next to a 22° halo, also known as a sundog. Colours have been brought up to create more interest. HSS!
Thanks to all who commented and faved and helped it onto Explore.
This was untitled when I first posted it, but I came across this Einstein quote and liked it.
"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning." Albert Einstein

Fine hexagonal ice particles suspended in the frigid air over the lake refract sunlight and produce prismatic "sun dogs" on either side of the rising sun in this view.

Double rainbow in the countryside in Iceland. A collage of three images. Many have asked me of the different shades within the arcs, and to make it short, here's the explanation
Tvöfaldur regnbogi í Hvítársíðu 2005. Samsett úr þremur römmum.
Ég nota þessa mynd á blogginu mínu á mbl.is
Closeup of a BBO crystal inside a resonant build-up ring cavity for frequency doubling 461 nm blue light into the ultraviolet. One can see the intense blue beam inside the cavity because of Rayleigh scattering of the light by air, the same reason the sky is blue, really.
Really, which questions are those? I cannot think of any.
The church of Google begs to differ.

This weeks theme in 52 weeks of 2014 is "Square".
My idea was to shoot the Inverse square law for light. I might have a little too much ambient to really show the fall of of intensity by distance.
I am also introducing two new tool in my box, the PowerShot S120 that is replacing my failing S95 and the EF 50 1.4 that is replacing my broken EF 50 1.8.
The top shot is taken with the PowerShot and the bottom with the EF 50 1.4 on the EOS 6D.
Handcrafted to the very little detail this modern ring was handmade using an old technique called : wax casting. It's a heavy, statement sterling silver piece that requires attention!
I was always amazed by moon craters..see here for photos : hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/solar/mooncrater.html
It was oxidized and handpolished.

1-The famous but seldom seen "green flash" or "emerald flash" which occurs just before the last part of the sun disappears from view at sunset is caused by the same atmospheric refraction and scattering effects which produce the red sunset.
hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/atmos/redsun.html
2-Green flashes and green rays are optical phenomena that occur shortly after sunset or before sunrise, when a green spot is visible, usually for no more than a second or two, above the sun, or it may resemble a green ray shooting up from the sunset point. Green flashes are a group of phenomena stemming from different causes, and some are more common than others.[1] Green flashes may be observed from any altitude (even from an aircraft). They usually are seen at an unobstructed horizon, such as over the ocean, but are possible over cloud tops and mountain tops as well.

Travel light and get close to nature.

I was also thinking about naming this photo "Rods and Cones".
As the amount of light decreases during the evening, the cones photoreceptor cells in our eyes stop functioning and we loose perception of color. The rods are very sensitive to low levels of light and are responsible for our night vision.

As much as I enjoy using the camera to extend one's vision, the photos that I see taken at night in full blazing color just don't sit right from a documentary point of view.
The camera has only 1 sensor that detects color at all light levels. I had to desaturate this image quite a bit to show the feeling of the evening campsite.

The sun dog is the light patch of refracted light one third into the picture from the left. I suspect there is another to the right, just on the very edge of the shot and I missed seeing it.
Here is a nice explanation hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/atmos/halo22.html
The banked curve with friction is usually the problem which washes out the borderline intoductory physics students. Cars, bikes, whatever--simultaneous equations with the careful decomposition of forces is too much.
Hyperphysics has a description of the solution.

“After sleeping through a hundred million centuries we have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with color, bountiful with life. Within decades we must close our eyes again. Isn’t it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up in it? This is how I answer when I am asked—as I am surprisingly often—why I bother to get up in the mornings.”

A foggy night at Stadarsveit county, Snaefellsnes peninsula. A nightshot wich shows my brocken spectre – a shadow in the fog at the center bottom of the photo.
Taken from the rooftop at Hotel Budir towards east, the lit-up sky to the left is a light pollution coming from Stykkisholmur town.

There it was, hanging out in the sky over Panera Bread. It started out as a full halo and then went to half. One minute it was there, and then it was gone.

The Global Human Built-up And Settlement Extent (HBASE) Dataset from Landsat, part of the Global High Resolution Urban Data from Landsat collection, is a global map of HBASE derived from the Global Land Survey (GLS) Landsat dataset for the target year 2010. The HBASE dataset consists of two layers: 1) the HBASE mask; and 2) the pixel-wise probability of HBASE. These layers are co-registered to the same spatial extent at a common 30m spatial resolution. The spatial extent covers the entire globe except Antarctica and some small islands. This dataset is one of the first global, 30m datasets of urban extent to be derived from the GLS data for 2010 and is a companion dataset to the Global Man-made Impervious Surface (GMIS) dataset.
Attune University is a leader in the field of professional education and courses. It's now coming up with a series of new courses in open source technology on the self paced basis with new inclusions like Liferay portlet development, JBOSS technologies, Apache server related technologies, Apache Cloud, PHP framework, testing, Mobile app development including Android and many more. The Global Man-made Impervious Surface (GMIS) Dataset From Landsat, part of the Global High Resolution Urban Data from Landsat collection, consists of global estimates of fractional impervious cover derived from the Global Land Survey (GLS) Landsat dataset for the target year 2010. The GMIS dataset consists of two components: 1) global percent of impervious cover; and 2) per-pixel associated uncertainty for the global impervious cover. These layers are co-registered to the same spatial extent at a common 30m spatial resolution. The spatial extent covers the entire globe except Antarctica and some small islands. This dataset is one of the first global, 30m datasets of man-made impervious cover to be derived from the GLS data for 2010 and is a companion dataset to the Global Human Built-up And Settlement Extent (HBASE) dataset.

View along the exit direction. You can actually see the laser beam for two reasons: dust and Rayleigh scattering. The beam inside of the laser cavity is perhaps 100 or more times as intense as the beam upon exit: it actually forms a weak dipole force trap for dust particles in the air which sparkle. In addition to the glowing dust, Rayleigh scattering off of air molecules is observed: because the beam is polarized vertically, it is more visible when viewed from the side than when viewed from the top.
