It sure is fun to get parts like this for the Hotrod,I was impressed with the quality of the Callies rods. One of the big selling points for me was that they are "stroker" clearanced,I am still using the stock stroke for a 400 but did not want to use a small base circle cam if I could help it,and that gave me some extra rod to cam lobe clearance for the cam grind I was planning.

Big end bore sizing out of round, and repeatability was also a selling point,I had the caps on and off,torqued/retorqued many times to blue print bearing clearances and the dimensional repeatability was as advertised. I also went with a little longer rod yet[6.000"] from my last 406[5.700"] to help the rod/stroke ratio. The stock 400 rod is a short 5.565".Rod Ratio={Connecting rod length, center to center}/crankshaft stroke. Their has been alot of "claims" that rod length moves the HP/TQ curve around that I am not convinced of,what I am convinced of is that the long rod with the same stroke will dwell the piston near TDC longer, creating less piston rock at TDC and BDC for better ring control, less thrust on the cylinder wall, and it makes the combustion chamber appear smaller to the incoming air/fuel charge, because of this less cam overlap is needed to properly fill the chamber. The total weight of the H beam rod is 612 grams.

Sky is the Limit
Yang Yang, South Korea. 2008
Sky is the limit is a domestic space sample, propulsed 20 meters above the ground, a tea room projected in a state of weightlessness, over the troubled horizon. The building’s body is nothing more than a fragile skeleton. Its thin arachnoid structure sets under tension a vertical void. A bicephalous head over this fleshless body is composed of two entities. Two captive voids of strictly similar dimensions provide two opposing experiences.

I'm still not giving up on the Q-jet yet{OK,it's more about money than carb.style}.It took alot of disassembling, drilling, and reassembling to get it to work with the new combo[for the idle circuit after cam break-in] but I finally got a clean idle and throttle response is awesome almost like fuel injection. It has 10" of vacuum at idle[1100RPM] with the XS282S solid lifter cam.Maybe a silly thought, but the small primarys in the Q-jet may help the eng. stay away from detonation[like a restrictor plate engine]?not sure of that but it makes for good throttle response. The spacers do make the carb. sit tall, that also added some plenum volume that the old combo seemed to respond well to,along with keeping the heat away from the carb.,and a smooth transition from the spread bore to the square bore pattern. Some of the Q-jet info.I got from books by Cliff Ruggles and Doug Roe,and alot of my own{and dad's} past experiance, the two books are the best I have found on this carburetor.
Back where it belongs. The power steering pump is not mounted yet in this photo because the block did not have the bosses drilled and tapped to mount it.I did not notice this on the stand or at the start of the build, too late it's all together,[WTF!!!]where's the fun???,so I used the pump bracket for a template and drilled/tapped the bolt bosses with the eng.in the car,I was not in a good mood abought that to say the least, but it all worked out and no water sprays out when the engine is running.

This is after a long day of getting the eng. back in the car, running and Cam break-in done. It's always fun to hear a new engine come to life for the first time, this was no exception,I had the oil system primed on the stand and stabbed the dist. and set the same advance I used with the old combo by the damper marks, primed the fuel system and hit the starter, the eng. fired and had oil pressure immediately, and I set the throttle at 2000 RPM for cam break-in,with various settings other than idle for 20 minutes. My old mufflers were shot when I pulled the old engine, but still sounded ok and was driveable, this engine sounded like it had open headers on it,the engine has ALOT of exhaust pressure at the pipes,I live in a very quiet neighborhood[I am the exception] and I am sure it was heard for blocks around, some of the neighbors came over to see what the heck I was doing now, they were OK with it though. It WILL have new mufflers before I drive it.
