Chaz Kieffer, a senior civil engineering major with a minor in global engineering, is interning with Stantec Consulting in Canada, working on an inspection project for the City of Hamilton and enjoying exploring Ontario, including Toronto, Hamilton, and Niagara Falls. When Chaz returns to campus next month, he will continue to serve as a Resident Assistant and play on the Hardrocker soccer team.

Wegens verbouwing van het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen kon het Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede vier jaar geleden een royale keuze laten zien uit de Antwerpse collectie zeventiende-eeuwse schilderkunst. Een feestelijke tentoonstelling was dat, waarin alle kopstukken van de Vlaamse barok vertegenwoordigd waren, maar waarin ook minder bekende schilders konden worden ontdekt. Het opvallendste onbekende werk was een dubbelportret van twee meisjes als de heiligen Agnes en Dorothea. Hun houdingen waren zo informeel en hun blikken zo in zichzelf gekeerd, zo slaperig bijna, dat je niet naar een schilderij leek te kijken maar naar een toevallige still uit het dagelijks leven. ‘Het rechter meisje zou zo in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw geschilderd kunnen zijn’, schreef ik in mijn recensie. De naam bij dit schilderij: Michaelina Wautier (1604-1689). Een vrouwelijke kunstenaar nota bene, daar waren er in de zeventiende eeuw niet zo veel van. Waarom is ze niet bekender? Wat maakte ze nog meer?
Voor zover die vragen te beantwoorden zijn, gebeurt dat nu op de eerste monografische tentoonstelling over Michaelina Wautier in Antwerpen – niet in het Koninklijk Museum, dat nog altijd wordt verbouwd, maar in het Museum aan de Stroom – en in een kloek boek dat bij die tentoonstelling verscheen. Er is weinig over Wautier bekend, maar de auteurs hebben indrukwekkend veel gegevens bijeengebracht die samen toch een beeld geven van de kunstenares en haar milieu.
Ze groeide op in Mons en was later werkzaam in Brussel, waar ze samenwoonde met haar jongere broer Charles, eveneens schilder. De twee hadden connecties met het hof van aartshertog Leopold Wilhelm, die vier schilderijen van Michaelina kocht. Ze werd 85 jaar oud, maar er zijn uit dat lange leven maar zo’n dertig schilderijen overgeleverd.
In het MAS zijn – naast werk van verwante tijdgenoten – 22 werken van Wautier bijeengebracht. Ruim de helft is gesigneerd, de andere schilderijen zijn (veelal recente) toeschrijvingen. En als ik eerlijk ben: het valt tegen. Koppen van figuren zijn vaak onhandig verkort, kleding en plooival is meestal ook niet ruimtelijk. Composities zijn niet stevig. Uitgesproken van kleur zijn de meeste evenmin. Wautier mag dan ‘buitengewoon veelzijdig’ zijn geweest (aldus het museum), ze blonk nergens echt in uit. Haar portretten zijn lang geen Van Dycks, haar Bijbelse en mythologische scènes halen het niet bij die van Rubens of Jordaens, een bloemstilleven is mooi maar niet uitzonderlijk. Het dubbelportret van de twee meisjes dat in 2014 in Enschede te zien was, blijkt ook meteen Wautiers beste werk te zijn.
Een positieve noot tot besluit: haardrachten, daar was ze goed in. Dat zijn steeds de levendigste gedeeltes van haar schilderijen. Johannes de Evangelist heeft een gek geconstrueerd caviahoofd, maar daar is met schwung het kapsel van een hardrocker uit de jaren tachtig omheen gedrapeerd. Het haar van de engel in De annunciatie (1659) is een geschilderde reclame voor volumeshampoo. In portretten zijn de uiteindes van lange lokken ware stilleventjes: wat je bij de kapper soms op de vloer ziet liggen, daar had Michaelina plezier in als ze het op een schouder aantrof. Dat is leuk. Maar dat maakt haar nog niet tot ‘de leading lady van de barok’.
