Watched this owl hunting the northern Minnesota bog at dusk. It flew to five different perches over half an hour. This footage is from the closest perch.

Been keeping an eye out for one of these for many years every time I visited the western mountain states. Worth the wait. Found the nest, but it was in the shadow of the canyon wall and the river bank. Went back the next day hoping there was a window between the sun rising above the canyon wall, but before losing it behind the river bank, and it all worked out.
A duel for a prime perch. Only one species of hummingbird regularly occurs in the Chicago region, but in Costa Rica, we saw and photographed 18 species of a possible 50. A few more are below.

This secretive little guy was darting around the floor of a stand of sequoias. A spot of light made it through.
At Greene Valley Forest Preserve. Hoping to see an owl when I saw some movement in this hollowed out tree. Waited quite a while and some heads started popping out.
Very low light. ISO 1600, 1/30 second, 600mm, monopod, cropped quite a bit.

Took a trip with my Dad up to Sax Zim Bog in the far north woods of Minnesota. Our first day we had overnight temperatures of -35F (not talking wind chill here). We were looking for birds when this guy popped up right next to us. It scurried around for about 10 minutes giving quite a show. Seven new birds on this first trip to this region.

This is the moment of the "diamond ring" effect as totality is ending and the sun begins to emerge once again from behind the moon.
I took this photo hand held with my wildlife photography equipment and was surprised it was able to capture several prominences and Bailey's beads. An interesting two minutes to learn the settings needed for eclipse photography - no second chances and every second needed.
Cooper's Hawk - backyard at last light. He had something when I spotted him. By the time I grabbed my camera and stalked up to him he was done and ready to fly off. No saturation bump on this...straight from the camera other than crop from original vertical.
