Hoarding for the Apple Store Taipei 101

Beazley Designs of the Year 2018

(September 2018 until January 2019)

Yang Shiyi

Unlike what we usually see on the hoarding around a soon-to-be-opened store, Yang Shiyi’s design for Taiwan’s first-ever Apple Store, in Taipei, doesn’t rely on the company’s products or branding. Instead, he created a seventy-five-metre-wide artwork that spanned the entirety of the storefront. Using the technique of Chinese paper-cutting – an ancient artform dating back centuries – with craft knives, Yang cut out an elaborate image of a banyan tree filled with creatures such as black bears, leopard cats and owls. The design suggests that the store is not just a place to sell products but also a space for people to congregate, interact and exchange ideas.

The exhibition displayed 87 of the most innovative designs across fashion, architecture, digital, transport, product and graphic design from the past 12 months, as nominated by design experts from around the world.

Getting a bespoke jacket with working sleeve buttons is one thing - that they are individually handstitched is something many people overlook. Here you can see the "ugly face" of hand stitching on the back off this custom jacket's button holes (the other side is much better looking)

Here you can see the start of a hat, created by overlapping weaves of palm straw. The beginning is just simple strands, which can take from three days to three weeks to become a finished hat, depending on the complexity of the weave.

More striped stockings. This hand spun yarn is made from commercial roving. The lighter color is 'marled'--meaning two different colors spun together.

La vita umana è come un pendolo che oscilla incessantemente fra noia e dolore, con intervalli fugaci, e per di più illusori, di piacere e gioia

I like to hot wax my hands in the winter. It makes them so nice and soft but during the hot waxing my hand looks a little freaky.
