Evoking a good bit of nostalgia, a 1958 Buick waits at the Wig Wag signal as the Nebraska Zephyr backs into Barn 9 at the Illinois Railway Museum on September 19th, 2021. The passenger cars on the Zephyr date to 1936 and the E5 locomotive dates to 1940, so the Buick is a bit of a baby compared to the railroad equipment.

Hope you're all having a great holiday. I was away from the internet for a while.

One from the archives which I've only just got round to processing! A beautiful morning in The Lake District.

This Woodland Kingfisher (Halcyon senegalensis) was photographed in the wild in the Kruger National Park.

Another shot of the gorgeous lake I happened to see during the coming of sunset while on the Icefields Parkway.

As a sidenote, I just came across the word, halcyon, somewhere recently and I think it's my new favorite word; so many wonderful definitions, and it could be very useful the next time I play Scrabble at the brewery with the fella. ;)

Even though this shot was taken two months ago, it feels like it was just yesterday. CPKC 113 glides past the west signal cantilever at Howland as it heads toward the junction with the Mactier Subdivision. A friend and I had made our way out here with the understanding that these signals would soon be reduced to a pile of scrap - along with all the others from Leaside to Davenport. Despite the bitter sweetness in knowing what was coming, the meetups with others who had a similar goal was the silver lining.

Until it falls down or is demolished, this place will continue to intrigue me. I've photographed it several times but in the last year, it's definitely deteriorated quite significantly. If I could, I'd go inside- but unfortunately that's not possible! Here are some interior images taken by a trespasser with more nerve than I.

"7 Days of Shooting" "Week #12" "One Word" "Black and White Wednesday"

Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae), a member of the Tree Kingfisher sub-family (Halcyoninae), is the world's largest kingfisher. Its cackling territorial chorus is one of the most familiar sounds of the Australian bush.

Although endemic to Australia, the species' scientific name is based on a false claim by French explorer Pierre Sonnerat to have "discovered" the species in New Guinea ("novaeguineae"), where it does not occur. (Sonnerat probably saw a specimen taken by Joseph Banks in eastern Australia on the Endeavour voyage with James Cook in 1770.)

The term "halcyon days" comes from the ancient Greek myth that Alcyone (kingfisher) nested on the sea, which it calmed in order to lay its eggs on a floating nest. Two weeks of calm weather were therefore expected around the winter solstice - hence the "halcyon days" of peace and calm.

Originally tasked with mobile anti-air defense, the Halcyon platform was soon adopted to fit a variety of roles, and now serves as a workhorse of the Federation's mechanized ground forces. Shown here equipped with a long range beam rifle, twin rocket pods and 140mm sabot artillery arm, a two man team can pilot a Halcyon to devastating effect on the battlefield.

More micro mecha to start the year! I learn a little more each time I do one. This one was done in NCS colors, as I've just received the EXCELLENT Lego Space book by Peter and Tim. Great inspiration from you guys, thank you!

The most vivid memories I carry with me are those of the innumerable travel journeys that I have undertaken. In all those special places, I still remember the sight of the light falling on the landscape around, the sounds of gurgling water within the rustling forest, the smell of fresh earth after a rainstorm, and the grandeur of nature's marvelous handiwork. The photographic memories from those halcyon days serve as a reminder to me that there is no dearth of people, places and activities to be amazed by and enjoyed at.

One of those memories was my second trip to the desert southwest, covering the beautiful landscapes and waterscapes of Utah and Arizona. And when I look back at the photos from that trip, I keep coming back to a gorgeous sunset from the cavernous canyon of Horseshoe Bend near Page Arizona. It is one of those gaping holes whose immensity, next to the Grand Canyon, will take some time to sink in. Being my second visit, I took to the time to actually savor the rugged landscape all around before digging in for my camera for those opportunistic shots. Having lugged around a wide lens proved fruitful on this journey as it enabled me to capture that gaping hole!

This is partially what I had envisioned for this particular concept, but all things considered, I'm actually happy with the result. I'll try and revisit it at a later point, but this will do for now. It's inspired by an artist I came across at the Portland Saturday Market like.... ten years ago or so. Lol. I cannot remember the artist's name though, so I apologize. 3

But good news is, my screen is fixed so I can work on photos much easier. Ha. Partially why this is being posted 'late'.

Anyways, it's been a pretty long and exhausting week so I don't have much to say with this one.

Hey Halcyon, what are you looking at? guess we find out tomorrow?
