Hagia Sophia or Ayasofia in Istanbul needs no introduction. It is the greatest example (both in size and importance) of Byzantine architecture. Completed in 537 CE, it has been world's largest cathedral for almost a thousand years. After the fall of Byzantine Empire, it was a mosque for another almost 500 years. It offers a wealth of historical details and is just plain awe-inspiring
In Berlin ist es grad grau, kalt und nass. Da hab ich mal in den alten Urlaubsfotos gekramt und die Hagia Sofia im Abendrot gefunden. Da wurde es mir doch gleich ganz sonnig ums Herz.....

Hagia Sophia, Turkish Ayasofya, Latin Sancta Sophia, also called Church of the Holy Wisdom or Church of the Divine Wisdom, cathedral built at Constantinople (now , Istanbul Turkey ) the 6th century ce (532–537) under the direction of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I. By general consensus, it is the most important Byzantine structure and one of the world’s great monuments.
For more than a millennium it was the Cathedral of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
After the Turkish conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Mehmed II had it repurposed as a mosque. In 1934 Turkish Pres. Kemal Atatürk secularized the building, and in 1935 it was made into a museum.
Art historians consider the building’s beautiful mosaics to be the main source of knowledge about the state of mosaic art in the time shortly after the end of the Iconoclastic Controversy in the 8th and 9th centuries. The Hagia Sophia is a component of a UNESCO World Heritage site called the Historic Areas of Istanbul , which includes that city’s other major historic buildings and locations.
The Paleo – Christian temple of Hagia Sophia is one of the most impressive Byzantine churches of Thessaloniki. Located in the center of the city as well, it is a very beautiful “Domed Basilica” style temple with an imposing architecture, beautiful wall paintings and elaborate mosaics.
Having a 1600 years old history, it can easily be considered one of the most important religious sites in Macedonia.
The temple of Agia Sofia is one of several city’s monuments included as a World Heritage Site on the UNESCO list, in 1988. Thessaloniki is considered one of the most important destinations in the world when it comes to Paleo christian Byzantine temples.

The mystical city Istanbul hosted many civilizations since centuries, of which Byzantium and Ottoman Empires were both the most famous ones. The city today carries the characteristics of these two different cultures and surely Hagia Sophia is a perfect synthesis where one can observe both Ottoman and Byzantium effects under one great dome.
Hagia Sophia is a great architectural beauty and an important monument both for Byzantine and for Ottoman Empires. Once a church, later a mosque, and now a museum at the Turkish Republic, Hagia Sophia has always been the precious of its time..
"Hagia Sophia is a former Greek Orthodox Christian patriarchal basilica, later an imperial mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its construction in 537 until 1453, it served as an Orthodox cathedral and seat of the Patriarch of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Empire. The building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1931. It was then secularized and opened as a museum on 1 February 1935"
"Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have "changed the history of architecture". It remained the world's largest cathedral for nearly a thousand years, until Seville Cathedral was completed in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and was the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site, the previous two having both been destroyed by rioters. It was designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles."

The Hagia Sophia, built in 537 AD as a Byzantine cathedral, was the world’s largest church for nearly 1,000 years. After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, it was converted into a mosque, adding Islamic features. In 1935, Turkey’s secular government turned it into a museum to symbolize religious coexistence. In 2020, it was controversially reconverted into a mosque, though it remains open to visitors, reflecting Istanbul’s layered religious and cultural history.
Hagia Sophia former church (360–1453) erected by the Eastern Roman Empire. Completed in AD 537 it stayed the world's largest interior space and dome until the construction of Saint Peter in Rome.
