Gurudongmar Lake (also known as Gurudogmar Lake) is one of the highest lakes in the world located at an altitude of 17,100 feet (5,148 m). It lies on the North side of the Khangchengyao Range in a high plateau area contiguous to the Tibetan Plateau. The stream emerging from the lake is one of the source-streams of the Tista River.

The lake is highly revered by the Sikkimese and Buddhists and the waters are supposed to have curative properties.

Due to the extremely inhospitable terrain and the difficulties associated with reaching the place, the lake sees only a handful of visitors each year. Access is strictly controlled at the Army checkpost at Giagong. Due to the altitude, there is a scarcity of oxygen.

I was puffing and panting there..... struggling to walk or talk! Man! what a wonderful place it was :)

The roads to most beautiful and untouched places are harder and adventurous, but it's all worth the effort once you are there.

This place was on my top priority list when visiting #Sikkim. Believe me the actual site was not less than heaven. Just couldn't imagine that the place like this even exist on this planet, though one has to take it really easy to move around and spend some time due to lack of oxygen. But was lucky enough to spend some 1 hour in the lap of untouched beauty moving around, looking and exploring and yeah capturing it too as had never imagined a place as beautiful did exist.

At 5210 meters (17100 feet) Gurudongmar is one of the highest lakes in the world. Now, in late spring, it is a bowl full of water in the middle of a high desert within 5 km of the Chinese Tibetan border. Looking south west, as in this photo, one sees the Kanchenjunga range.

Stories which relate this lake to Padmasambhava and his rituals of tantric buddhism also say that part of the lake never freezes in winter. This is just a story. The clear and still water is sweet, which means that the lake could freeze.

The last grass and wildflowers straggle away about 200 meters below the lake. Around the lake one sees only a faint covering of moss and lichen: apparently because of the lack of oxygen. Soon after this photo was taken I had a touch of hypoxia and had to retreat about 300 meters down to recover. However, there are birds: sparrows and two more species which I didn't have the time to identify. What food chain leads up to them?
