Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib

Another attempt at the motion panning. Tried this shot during the annual Nihangs' procession in Amritsar, India. During this event the Nihangs show their martial art and horse riding skills after a religious procession is taken out. All the Nihangs who take part in the procession then gather in a ground where they exhibit their skills with weapons and on horse backs. In this shot this young Nihang is attempting a very difficult maneuver by standing on top of the two running horses.

.....“Hola Mohalla” is a festival which was started by Guru Gobind Singh in the 17th Century, as a day for Sikhs to practise their military exercises and hold mock battles. These days, Sikhs celebrate by watching and partaking in martial arts parades, led by the nishan sahibs of the Gurdwaras. These are then followed by poetry readings and music.....

Gurudwara Ghari Sahib- marks the site of the fortress like double storeyed house, with a high compound wall around it and only one entrance from the north, which was used by Guru Gobind Singh as a temporary citadel in the unequal battle on 7 December 1705.

This picture was taken at Takhat Sachkhand Hazoor Sahib where Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maraj left for sachkand.

If you download this picture to your computer and zoom it you will see Guru Maraj's kalgi.

A very rare picture to get in such high quality

GURDWARA TARI SAHIB is situated on a low mound to the west of Gurdwara Katalgarh. When Guru Gobind Singh decided to leave the Garhi at Chamkaur during the night of 18? December 1705, three Sikhs, Bhai Daya Singh, Bhai Dharam Singh and Bhai Man Singh, came out with him, too. They proceeded each in a different direction, agreeing to meet later at a common spot guided by the position of certain stars. Since he did not wish to leave unannounced, Guru Gobind Singh, upon reaching the mound where now stands Gurdwara Tari (literally, a clap) Sahib, clapped and shouted: "Here goes the Pir of Hind (the saint of India)!" From their different points the three Sikhs also raised shouts. This baffled the besieging host, and Guru Gobind Singh and the Sikhs were soon gone out of harm's way. The Gurdwara on the mound marks the site from where Guru Gobind Singh had proclaimed his departure by hand clapping.

The Gurudwara Sahib was under construction in March of 2005.

Gurudwara Machiwara Sahib- After leaving Chamkaur, Guru Gobind Singh Ji made his way alone on foot to this place. Here, exhausted with not even shoes on his feet Guru Ji rested the night

Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib- After the heroic death of two elder sons of Guru Gobind Singh, in the battle of Chamkaur, on December22, 1704 his two younger sons, namely, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh were done to death, by being bricked alive in the fort of Sirhind on December 28, 1704 by the order of the tyrant Nawab Wazir Khan. Mata Gujri, grandmother of the two Sahibzadas expired due to the shock of brutal murder of her two grand children.

Hola Mohalla or Hola Mahalla or simply Hola is a Sikh festival that takes place on the first of the lunar month of Chet which usually falls in March. This, by a tradition estabished by Guru Gobind Singh, follows the Hindu festival of Holi by one day; Hola is the masculine form of the feminine sounding Holi.

The word "Mohalla" is derived from the Arabic root hal (alighting, descending) and is a Punjabi word that implies an organized procession in the form of an army column. But unlike Holi, when people playfully sprinkle colored powder, dry or mixed in water, on each other, the Guru made Hola Mohalla an occasion for the Sikhs to demonstrate their martial skills in simulated battles.

Together the words "Hola Mohalla" stands for "mock fight". During this festival, processions are organised in the form of army type columns accompanied by war-drums and standard-bearers and proceeding to a given spot or moving in state from one gurdwara to another. The custom originated in the time of Guru Gobind Singh who held the first such mock fight event at Anandpur in February 1701.

Gurudwara Burj Mata Gujri (Thanda Burj)- It was at the site of Gurudwara Burj Mata Gujri that the two younger sons, Fateh Singh and Zorawar Singh of Guru Gobind Singh and his mother were kept in confinement by Wazir Khan, the fort was known as `THANDA BURJ' which was considered a cool place during the summer. But it was a punishment for Guru's sons and his mother to keep them here in extreme winter. It was at this place that Mata Gujri collapsed on hearing the news of the martyrdom of her grandsons. Later on, Gurdwara Mata Gujri was constructed at this place.

I found this painting of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of Sikhs, in Arts gallery, Chandigarh. Five Sikhs are also seen in the painting. The flag is different to present day's Sikh flag...

This painting was painted around the 19th century which shows Guru Gobind Singh Ji on a journey with Panj Singhs.

One of the Singhs is an Akaali Nihung wearing blue baana.

What's interesting to note is what is displayed on the flag the Nihung Singh is carrying.

It is not a Khanda as we know associate Sikhism to but instead a Kataar (a punch dagger), Kirpan (sword) and either a Dhaal (Sheld) or possibly a chakkar (throwing disc)

Gurdwara Charan Kanwal at Machhiwara marks the site of the garden where Guru Gobind Singh had a sip of water and a spell of brief sleep. It was here that his three devotees Bhai Mani Singh, Bhai Daya Singh and Bhai Dharam Singh joined him. The sacred shrine commemorating the historical event, has a beautiful building, worthy of the holy tradition. An annual congregation fair is held in December, corresponding to 9th & 10th of Poh, the days of Guruji stay at Machiwara.

Another shrine popularly called Gurdwara Chubara Sahib is located at Machhiwara. Here at the house of Masand Gulaba where the Guru spent the night. The place is known as 'Gulaba da Chubara'.

It is here that the Guru sang the shabad "Mitra Pyare Nu". The Gurdwara is supplied water from the same well believed to be the one from which garden was watered during those days. An annual congregation fair is held in December, corresponding to 9th & 10th of Poh, the days of Guruji stay at Machiwara.
