Next to the restaurant that I always had my meal whenever I visited Gujarkhan is this mobile cobbler. The interesting part of this capture is that while having your shoes repaired or polished, you can order your cup of tea ( Chay) and socializing with the cobbler. I guess it's the same concept as going to the bars in the western countries and chat with the bartender. Note how cold Pakistan is at this time of the year ( February) by the way they wrapped themselves up with warm clothes

I am sure this machine is imported from China, but this mode of public transport is commonly used in small cities around Pakistan. Light, efficient and 'double cabin', it is the most economical transportation and always on shared basis.

If you drive along the GT Road towards Lahore from Islamabad and passing by this town of Gujarkhan, you can see the colourful wedding decoration outlets along the road. Most of the decoration is to decorate the wedding car. October to December every year are wedding season months. It's the occassion that I can see everywhere in Pakistan at the moment.

(Taken from Zulfiqar Ali Kalhoro article), Some 25 kilometres west of Gujar Khan and over the Sui Cheemian perennial river sits the ancient Sangni Fort. This fort, used for keeping prisoners, is believed to have been built by the Mughals and later occupied by the Dogras of Kashmir and the Sikhs.
There are many such forts and fortresses in the Potohar region, which include the Rohtas, Attock, Pharwala, Rawat, Giri. However, the Sangni Fort, perched on a picturesque location overlooking two rivulets, is most spectacular.
It is built over a hill from where one has a panoramic view of several villages, particularly the Sui Cheemian, Dhok Las, etc. The Dhole Las Village is noted for a 17th century necropolis. These graves are constructed of Kanjur stone and possibly belong to some of the soldiers of the Mughal period who were stationed at the fort. Similar graves can also be seen in the Takkal Village with dilapidated funerary enclosure, which possibly belongs to a Mughal administrator of Sangni and neighbouring villages.
The main entrance gate of the fort opens to the east from where one can see as far as the Takkal Village, steps lead to the inside of the fort.
The fort has four bastions of almost equal diameter with stairways reaching the top of the bastions which were used for guarding the fort and its surrounding area.

Located inside the fort is a shrine of Abdul Hakeem. He is believed to have come from Arabia via Iran to preach in the area.
According to Rasheed of Dhoke Las, Abdul Hakeem came to Sangni during the Dogra rule. At that time, this area was under the jurisdiction of Azad Jammu Kashmir. When Abdul Hakeem came to Sangni to preach, he was not allowed in by Dogra soldiers. He was forced to leave the area and stay at the Chakrali Village, where many of the people became his disciples. He made Chakrali his permanent seat of preaching, from where his name spread to villages all over the Potohar region, until he died in Chakrali and was buried there.
According to Raja Aslam of Sui Cheemian, 50 years after the death of Abdul Hakeem, some people had seen the saint in their dreams, in which he ordered his disciples to take his mortal remains to the Sangni Fort. Accordingly, his mortal remains were taken for reburial to Sangni Sharif, where, today, his mausoleum stands at the centre of the fort. Soon, Sangni became to be known as Sangni Sharif.

A fabulous specimen of Potohar architecture, the tomb is said to have been built by his disciples.
It has three arched entrances from all directions. The tomb is constructed of marble. The hemispherical dome rests on the square building, the corners of which are decorated with four minarets.
The drum on which the dome rests is adorned with glazed titles. Close to the shrine is situated a mosque, which was also built by disciples of Abdul Hakeem.
The walls of the corridor are decorated with modern ceramics. The interior of the tomb is decorated with glasswork. The glazed tiles and glasswork are essential elements of the modern tomb architecture in Potohar. Almost in every village and town where there are shrines, one is bound to find these two forms of decoration on them.

The shrine of Abdul Hakeem attracts hundreds of people every Thursday and Friday. Newly married couples invariably visit the shrine to get the blessings of the saint. People also slaughter animals at the shrine in the hope of getting their wishes fulfilled and as a form of thanksgiving to the saint.
The devotees also take a bath in the spring which is situated west of the fort and is believed to have been a miracle of the saint.
Local people believe that there was no spring in Sangni until water came out from the earth where Abdul Hakeem was buried at the Sangni Fort. The spring never dries. Of the people taking a bath in it, some have illnesses that they hope the water will rid them of; water therapy is still a common practice at various shrines across Potohar.
Like the shrine, the fortress has also been maintained by the devotees of Abdul Hakeem.
There are ways of moving from one end to another in Pakistan. Public transport is very popular in Pakistan and there are many types of them. I only managed to cover some of the public transports type in my photostream and this is one of them. It is called 'QingQi' and I believe it is imported from China. It is a convenient way of moving inside a city in Pakistan and fare is extremely low. It's on shared basis.

Met Humayoun today who stays at Gujarkhan, Pakistan - asking me to take few shots of him to send to his wife( Pakistani British) who is residing in UK. Eventually Humayoun will be going to UK, but for now he is still appealing for the UK Visa to meet and live with his wife in UK. I just pray that he will succeed in getting the Visa to be together with his wife again.
Humayoun is a very great of friend. Friendly, honest, generous and kind-hearted.

It's just crosses my mind today..Pakistan , the country that I spent 3 years working in. Just wanna share my thought today with everyone by posting a good friend's photo. I hope Humayoun already has his Visa to be with his British Pakistani wife in UK.

The last time I heard from Humayoun was in December 2008. He already succeeded in obtaining his Visa to UK and now living with his wife ( Pakistani British) in UK. The process of obtaining Visa separated him from his wife about a year or so.
I hope Humayoun is happy now living with his wife in UK.

Kashif from Gujarkhan has been a long time friend since the early year of my working in Pakistan. I met hin a day before the Eid in Gujarkhan and managed to get this shot.
Chicken Boti is another favourite in Pakistani dishes. Marinated with spices and no fat on the chicken, the chicken is barbecued. It usuaally eaten with Roti ( bread) or naan , salad and yougurt.

The grave of Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider in Dhok Sawar Muhammad Hussain near Mandra, Punjab, Pakistan. Sawar Muhammad Hussain has the distinction of being the first (and only) Sepoy (the first rank of soldier in Pakistan Army) to be awarded Nishan-e-Haider for his gallantry.
The month was Ramadan and it was a Sunday afternoon at Rawalpindi. In Officers’ Mess, we two were dozing off the afternoon effects of Ramadan fast. We had Sawar Muhammad Hussain in mind but no clue as to the whereabouts of his resting place, less the reference of Gujar Khan. Something urged us out (what was that I don’t know), the Third One joined from Chaklala Garrison (the sole reason for adding on the company was that the Third One had a good resolution camera) and we were on road. Catching the trail from a seasoned Patwari from Gujar Khan, following the remote routes into the rural heart of Potohar, refuelling our car from an unorthodox gas station with quite an unorthodox filling mechanism, we eventually knocked at the doorsteps of Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed around Iftar. What followed the Fateha at the tomb was yet another unorthodox Iftar sitting on the roadside. It was some soul searching, had some memories to linger on and it officially added the Third One in the group. Welcome to the party…. “KABOOM KABOOM!!!, TIGER TIGER!!!”
Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed - Battle Account
Muhammad Hussain was born in Dhok Pir Bakhsh, Rawalpindi on 18 January, 1929. He was recruited in Pakistan Army on September 3, 1966, trained as a driver in the Armoured Corps and got posted to 20 Lancers as Sawar (a rank equivalent of Sepoy in Armoured Corps). During 1971 India Pakistan War, 20 Lancers was engaged on the (then) West Pakistan front in the area of Zafarwal-Shakargarh. Though a driver by military trade, Sawar Muhammad Hussain never missed an opportunity of taking over an automatic and returning fire on the enemy, on occasions risking his life. 5 December 1971 was spent by him in transporting the ammunition to the forward troops in the heat of the battle. On 8 and 9 December, he voluntarily joined four different Fighting Patrols on some challenging and risky tasks. On 10 December 1971, Sawar Muhammad Hussain was the first one to spot enemy digging on the parameter minefield near Village “Harar Khurd” and informed the Second in Command of his regiment about the situation. He then took initiative and became the front man in guiding the fire of the available anti-tank guns. This swift action resulted in destruction of 16 enemy tanks. On same day, around 4:00 PM, when Sawar Muhammad Hussain was directing the fire of one of his detachment’s Jeep Mounted Recoilless Rifle, he was hit by an enemy tank’s machine gun fire in his chest and embraced shahadat at the battlefield. Due to his unmatched valour and total disregard to personal safety right under the nose of enemy, he was posthumously awarded “Nishan-e-Haider”, the highest gallantry award of Pakistan Armed Forces. Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed’s native village, Dhok Pir Bakhsh was renamed “Dhok Sawar Muhammad Hussain” after him.

After travelling about 2.5 kilometers on Jatli-Devi road you come across the board with inscription and directions “Yadgar Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider”.
Butt family i s originated from Kashmir, Pakistan. When I lived in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan - I met and noticed that most people from the Butt families are very good looking. This might be a generalization, but I guess it is true.
