Burrowing Owl

The Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) is a small, long-legged owl found throughout open landscapes of North and South America. Burrowing owls can be found in grasslands, rangelands, agricultural areas, deserts, or any other open dry area with low vegetation. They nest and roost in burrows, such as those excavated by prairie dogs. Unlike most owls, burrowing owls are often active during the day, although they tend to avoid the midday heat. Like many other kinds of owls, though, burrowing owls do most of their hunting from dusk until dawn, when they can use their night vision and hearing to their advantage. Living in open grasslands as opposed to forests, the burrowing owl has developed longer legs that enable it to sprint, as well as fly, when hunting.

Burrowing owls have bright eyes; their beaks can be dark yellow or gray depending on the subspecies. They lack ear tufts and have a flattened facial disc. The owls have prominent white eyebrows and a white "chin" patch which they expand and display during certain behaviors, such as a bobbing of the head when agitated.

interesting sandstone forms in the lower Antelope Slot Canyon outside of Page Arizona, What do you see?

This is called a slot canyon, a narrow rift in the sandstone which can be 35' deep and at times almost too narrow to walk through. Other area's the canyon widens out to 20 ~30 feet. The sandstone swirls are formed by flooding water and wind currents over many many years. The Canyon featured is called "Lower Antelope Canyon" and Lower and Upper are both located just 5 miles east of Page Arizona

Kinderdijk, Netherlands.

This sunrise last October at Kinderdijk was certainly one of my most intense experiences. We arrived long before dawn, and the whole scenery was covered in mist and the windmills were hardly visible. No one was around to disturb the eerie atmosphere.

Two Remodelado's on the iconic Route 28 exit the narrowest section of the route in Alfama, Lisbon, Portugal. Route 28 is one of the most famous tram routes in the world taking in the twisty turny and very hilly single lane streets of the famous Alfama neighbourhood. Some sections of this part of the route are so narrow pedestrians have to seek shelter in doorways and you can knock on peoples doors as you go past in a tram!

Having got back from Belem we still had most of the afternoon free so we went for a ride on one of the red tour guided trams, complete with onboard commentary. This shot was taken from our tram while waiting at the traffic lights that govern this single line stretch as these two 28s made their way back onto the double line section. Being the most popular route on the Lisbon Tram network, 28s often travel in pairs to cater for the sheer amount of tourists that use the route. Unless you get to the starting point early, expect a long queue and a long wait before you can get on one.

Guide Falls on the Guide River, North West Tasmania.

A very attractive waterfall that is a leisurely amble from the car park and is surrounded by lawns and numerous picnic spaces.

The geology here is remarkable. During the Tertiary period, hot, fast moving basalt flowed down a gravel-floored river valley, pooled and cooled relatively slowly. That left a flow around 4m thick in places with strong columnar formations. Subsequent erosion of the gravel from beneath the lava flow resulted in the collapse of the basalt in great, van-sized blocks like so much 'lego'.

The Guide follows that weakness in the surface today.
