Castello d'Agogna - Il gufo alla finestra
Castello d'Agogna è un comune italiano di 1054 abitanti della provincia di Pavia in Lombardia. Si trova nella Lomellina settentrionale, a breve distanza da Mortara, alla sinistra del fiume Agogna.
Castello d'Agogna appartenne nel medioevo all'abbazia di Santa Croce di Mortara; nel 1387 venne infeudato ad Antonio Porro, conte di Pollenzo e signore di Robbio, ma ritornò probabilmente poco dopo allo Stato e forse non fu più infeudato, se non nel XVIII secolo, quando i Tarsis ebbero il titolo di Conti di Castel d'Agogna.
Nel 1713 passò con tutta la Lomellina sotto i Savoia, e nel 1859 entrò a far parte della provincia di Pavia.

'Il gufo delle nevi (Bubo scandiacus), noto anche col nome di civetta delle nevi, è la più grande specie di uccello nella regione artica, misura da 63 a 73 cm di lunghezza e ha un’apertura alare media di 170 cm.
Questi uccelli rapaci diurni sono grandi, bianchi e dalla testa rotonda, con gli occhi gialli e il becco nero, corto, forte e tagliente.'
'Per lo più diurno, solitario (forma coppie stabili solo durante il periodo riproduttivo), territoriale. Compie spostamenti stagionali irregolari. Le dimensioni dei territori, difesi dai maschi, variano a seconda dell’abbondanza della preda: se scarseggia, le coppie sono ampiamente distanziate, diversamente, in ricchezza di cibo, possono convivere anche cinque coppie in un’area di 250 ettari. Durante l'inverno, le femmine stabiliscono i territori, che difendono fino all’arrivo della primavera, quando volano a nord. Gli spostamenti stagionali sono imprevedibili in quanto legati all’abbondanza di prede e al clima.'
Creatura magica e ancestrale, in quasi tutte le culture antiche il Gufo é considerato una creatura magica figlia della notte, in cui si muove e vola.
Con la sua straordinaria capacità di vedere nel buio rappresenta in tanti miti la profezia e la chiaroveggenza.
Secondo la leggenda il terribile Gengis Khan doveva la sua fortuna ad un gufo.
Il grande condottiero rischiava di essere colto di sorpresa durante uno spostamento con il suo esercito, ma venne avvisato da un gufo che lo fece nascindere in un vicino bosco.
Per questo motivo il gufo era un animale sacro per i Tartari e veniva rappresentato sui vessilli del re.

Pulsatrix perspicillata, gufo dagli occhiali. Scatto ottenuto nei pressi di un torrente in Costa Rica (Zona Alajuela). Mi sono aiutato incastrando la lente in una biforcazione. Era molto scuro e sono rimasto molto sorpreso, controllando gli Exif, di vedere che il tempo di scatto di 1/50 ha originato questo scatto. Con i nuovi sensori, comunque non troppo differenti da quelli della D800, non mi azzarderei ad utilizzare un tempo di questo tipo....

I called the New Orleans area home for five years from 2000 to 2005 and was fortunate to leave only one month before Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. I have lots of great memories from this very special city but far too few rail photos as I was busy working for the NS and then UP and didn't shoot much at all in those pre digital days. In fact I lived 1/2 mile from this exact spot for five years but can count the number of times I shot from here on two hands. Sad I know....
At least on this visit back five years later, and now equipped with a digital SLR, I made a point to go back to a few of my old haunts to capture what I could....and of course have some more of that famous New Orleans cuisine.
Standing on top of the Ochsner Medical Center garage in the Elmwood neighborhood on the east bank of the river an NS C40-9W leads an unidentified Union Pacific manifest train dropping down the 1.25% grade toward East Bridge Junction near NOPB milepost 11 on the massive 4.4 mile long double track structure that rises 153 ft above the Mississippi River. This was probably the QLINSB which was one of two daily trains we built and ran directly to the NS daily. Both came out of Livinia and one carried a run through block for Norris Yard in Birmingham hence the 'B' suffix. Or perhaps it could have been the QLINSL also from Livonia but with an 'L' suffix to denote the Linwood block for Spencer Yard. The two trains became NS 394 and 172 respectively if my memory serves but its been a long time so I'm not sure if these symbols were accurate when this photo was taken.
Built between 1932 and 1935 it was named for the 'Kingfish' the popular and controversial former governor who was a sitting United States Senator when he was assassinated on the steps of the Louisiana state capitol in Baton Rouge just over three months before the first train lead by T&NO (Southern Pacific) Pacific number 616 crossed the span. When I took this photo the bridge was in the process of a 7 year four phase project to widen the highway portion from two steep, narrow (9 ft) and terrifying lanes on each side to three wide (11 ft) lanes with 8 ft shoulders. Four four years I commuted back and fourth across that bridge and drove countless dog catch crews back and fourth from the yard and every single time my heart stopped for just a moment crossing it....I've not been back since and sure would like to take a drive over it and see how much better it is now! Amazingly the highway expansion project was engineered by the same firm that designed it originally eight decades earlier, Modjeski and Masters.
