Built during the Ming dynasty, the Jinshanling section is one of the most picturesque sections of the Great Wall. This image was taken at West Five Window Tower looking east at the wall as the sun set, lighting up this incredible structure.

I'm calling it the "main entrance," but it may be the *only* entrance.

The Eastern State Penitentiary, also known as ESP, is a former American prison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world. EPS was operational from 1829 through 1971. Print Size 13x19 inches.

"Another settlement needs your help, I'll mark it on your map."

I love the building mode in Fallout 4 (see also my video on YT) and always wanted to translate this into Lego. I started with the shack in the middle and a fence. Then I decided the fence should go all the way around and everything should be modular, and things escalated quickly. After almost a year the MOC is finished.

This build is fully modular based on 8x8 dimensions, and 4x8 for the border. The sections are connected with pins for easy rearrangement. All items are replica's from the game, except for the concrete barrier and wooden spiked barrier. To prevent a boring build, there are no duplicate structures (only the small wooden fences as the game only has a few). For this reason I added the bus as a 'fence'. The bus is 7 studs wide and has many round shapes which was quite challenging.

The build contains 3708 parts.

Debateable about the subject itself, but loved the colours and wanted to make a very clean and sharp image that had an abundance of colour.

Show me the prisoner whose life has gone stale

Alcatraz Island, Calif., February 2015.

..... Being a witch myself, I couldn't let her dangle from that tree forever, could I?

So I transformed the knight into a pig and helped the girl down.

Loraine told me she was banned from the kingdom for being a witch.

Apparently only men can practice magic.

Now something like that really pisses me off.

Me and Loraine went to a nearby guard tower to have some fun.

She pulled out some girly magic wand and started to wave in all directions.

Almost poked my eye out too! What an excuse for a witch!

No wonder she got banned .....

There is a lone cattle car that sits on the tracks in the main entrance of Auschwitz-Birkenau as a reminder of the the train loads of people that were brought here to be murdered.

Stairway up to the Guard Tower in Quebec City. Soldiers lived in these towers during the war between the English and the French.

After Germany sparked World War II by invading Poland in September 1939, the Schutzstaffel (SS) converted Auschwitz I, an army barracks, into a prisoner-of-war camp for Polish political prisoners.[4] The first inmates, German criminals brought to the camp in May 1940 as functionaries, established the camp's reputation for sadism. Prisoners were beaten, tortured, and executed for the most trivial reasons. The first gassings—of Soviet and Polish prisoners—took place in block 11 of Auschwitz I around August 1941.

A medieval looking guard tower at the Old Montana Prison.

Joliet Correctional Center aka Joliet Prison or Collins Street Prison. I'd love to get inside with a camera now that it's empty.

Joliet, Illinois

From the tower at the main gate we see to the right the building that houses administrative offices. The top portion with the dormers and skylights is broken into several large meeting rooms, some set aside for religious services. Extending out the back is an auditorium. The building directly across holds occupational training facilities and the cafeteria. The chimney belongs to the power plant, which is adjacent but outside of the wire. I have labeled my photos "abandoned," but in fact several of the buildings and the athletic fields have been used since 2019 by the Hudson Sports Complex.

In 1936 there were several of these guard towers in various locations around Alcatraz penitentiary. The officers who manned these towers were armed with both rifles and handguns. All the towers were equipped with spotlights to aid in night time operations. As an additional security precaution, the correctional officers on duty were locked in the towers. Working on "The Rock" doesn't seem like it was a very pleasant job.

Ok, enough playing with the new cam & being sidetracked by bokeh.... back to my old cam & our trip to San Francisco in June.

Alcatraz. The Rock. 22 acre island prison, in San Francisco Bay, from1933-1963. Lead image taken through a window in what would have been the common room. An inmate's view of freedom?

The prison closed in 1963. In 1969, native american activists occupied Alcatraz & after a 19 month stand-off successfully gained significant indian rights. Taken over by the National Park Service in 1972, Alcatraz reopened as an ecological reserve, bird sanctuary & with public access to the prison facilities. Currently, it is San Francisco's most popular tourist attraction. The ferries run several times a day & all are often fully booked days in advance. Best to prebook via internet. Price of a ticket includes a self-guided audio tour & you can stay on the island as long a time as you wish. It's a welcoming well-run environement, no concessions or trashy souvenir shops to be found.

The audio tour is excellent & with an outstanding soundtrack that puts you there, in the moment. The section that audibly re-enacts the May 1946 failed prison escape known as the Battle of Alcatraz suggests all the intensity of the dire situation. 3 prison officers were killed & many more seriously injured. In 1962, 3 prisoners did escape by crawling through an air vent. The swimming distance to the mainland is 1.5 miles. After the 3 dove into the rough frigid late night waters of the bay they were never seen or heard from again. The official report lists them presumed drowned. 50 years later, however they are still on the FBI's Most Wanted list. More fanciful to imagine they got away, and like Biggs, made it to South America & freedom. The escape was dramatized in the 1979 movie "Escape from Alcatraz, with Clint Eastwood.

The island has a fascinating history dating back thousands of years. Definitely worth a visit.

Last weekend I went to Tasmania to walk the Three Capes Track. We spent an hour or so in Port Arthur Historic Site before the start.

These photos were taken with an iPhone 6.

The next day we were at Auschwitz-Birkenau. There were many camps around the same area in Poland called Auschwitz and most had a number attached to them. This camp was the largest and most infamous and it was called Auschwitz II but it was also called Birkenau. This camp was larger then the Warsaw Ghetto and the area it occupied was so big that I couldn't see the ends of it. It was misty and wet outside as we trudged into the entrance of the concentration camp. After walking for a bit I turned around and got this photo.

The Manzanar Concentration Camp is on the National Register of Historic Places #76000484 and is also a National Historic Landmark.

Guard tower on a steep rock with interior. My first Colossal Contest VI 2008 entry.

View of a moat and turret of Odawara Castle (Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan) located on the eastern side of the castle. The original turret collapsed in the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake (which also reduced major cities such as Tokyo and Yokohama to rubble), and was rebuilt to half its height in 1934. This turret is flanked on both sides with cherry trees, which create a beautiful scene in early spring.

New year's day at Ammoudara beach. Best viewed Large, On Black.

Some of you are maybe experiencing "déjà vu" here... This was taken the same day as the other one, but since the film camera is full-frame, I could use the full 35mm of the lens to get a wider angle, so I tried a different approach. I have to admit I like this photo way better than the other one, for too many reasons :-)

The enchanting coastal beauty of San Juan, Puerto Rico, unfolds as the viewer takes in a breathtaking scene. The composition frames a picturesque view that stretches out to the shimmering seawater, where a graceful sailboat glides serenely against the horizon.

Nestled amidst the coastal charm, historic walls tell tales of centuries past, their weathered textures adding a touch of timeless elegance to the scene. These fortified walls stand as silent witnesses to the rich history and cultural heritage of San Juan. Rising majestically above the coastline, an ancient guard tower commands attention, symbolizing the city's maritime legacy.

The juxtaposition of the sailboat, the historic walls, and the guard tower creates a harmonious blend of old-world charm and nautical allure. The azure waters, the distant horizon, and the architectural elements converge to form a captivating visual narrative, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the unique and captivating ambiance of San Juan's coastal landscape.

Officially known as the Granada Relocation Center, Camp Amache was an internment site for Japanese-Americans during WWII. The first evacuees arrived from California in August, 1942, and 3 months later the population reached 7,300, making it the tenth largest city in Colorado.

The barracks, water tower and guard tower seen here are modern reproductions. None of the original structures were meant to be permanent, though the original concrete pads on which they were built remain. Amache was closed in October, 1945.

More can be read about Amache here.

Infrared

One of the guard building that is positioned near the main gates of the ordinance plants. It was said the after a certain time, all passer-bys were shot on sight if they stay to close to the boundary.

Replica of an historic watch tower at the Manzanar Relocation Center National Historic Site, built in 2005. Eight watchtowers, equipped with searchlights and machine guns pointed inward at the incarcerees, were positioned around the perimeter of the camp.

Sarah's comment- " My hubby worked as a park ranger at Manzanar a few years ago and he is the one responsible for bringing the search light to the tower. He had some friends at a different park who were getting rid of it so he took 2 days to drive out and get it. He then spent hours restoring and repainting it so it could live in the elements a few more years."

Another interesting fact-

188 couples were married at Manzanar. Some former internees say that without the camps, they never would have met their spouse. Hundreds of other couples married just before going to camp to avoid being separated.
