I've grown carrots in the garden almost every year. Here at Chiot's Run they aren't very fond of the heavy lean soil and thus they don't get very large. As a result I generally grow the small round variety. In my mom's garden however, she's spent years amending the soil and it's now a deep rich loam that grows some of the most beautiful carrots you've ever seen.

Yesterday I went to my mom's and we harvested a row of 'Yukon Gold' potatoes. These were potatoes that she grew last year and she didn't get around to eating and found them sprouting in her root cellar this spring. We figured we may as well use them, so we planted them earlier this spring when we planted my sampler pack. They produced over 50lbs of potatoes!
Publicity photo of Felicity Kendall and Richard Briers from the BBC series The Good Life*. I hope I'm allowed to keep this posted on Flickr because the message is important.
The Good Life is/was a British sitcom that ran from 1975-78 on BBC1. It starred the wonderful Richard Briers as Tom Good, a man who had a change of heart when he hit his 40th birthday and gave up his job as a draughtsman so he and his wife Barbara (played by the equally wonderful Felicity Kendall) could live their lives in a self-sufficient lifestyle. It was a charming program with many funny moments. I first became acquainted with it in 2005 when we were living in London and working at the British Library. I'd always been a gardener, but this program really inspired me to become more serious about growing my own food. I even bought Brier's book (he, too was inspired by the series) called GROW YOUR OWN NOSH.
I wasn't the only one inspired. In a recent issue of the Daily Mail there was a story about an entire English Village who banded together and did this same thing. It is truly inspiring to read about people who are taking such an active role in providing their own food. I've found similar inspiration here on Flickr, and hope others are doing the same.
*This series is available on DVD for viewing in the USA under the title "Good Neighbors." It also starred Penelope Keith and the late Paul Eddington .
Very excited to get my hands on some freshly dug ginger root! Ginger is among many foods that are irradiated, rendering the roots unable to sprout (amongst many other significant health concerns). Finding ginger root that hasn’t been treated with radiation is not always easy here. Last Winter I successfully propagated turmeric rhizomes and harvested some gorgeous fresh roots which we used in raw juices and in cooking, etc so this winter growing ginger is in the works The rhizomes grow horizontally so will need a wider pot as I have a few of these large pieces, some lighter soil, a good sunny place and some humidity. The reward is luscious foliage, gorgeous blossoms, an incredible spicy fragrance and of course the roots that can be harvested after a year (and will continue to grow!) Super excited to play around with these roots and see if they grow as happily as the turmeric did I’ve got a bit of a head start here with these being just dug and cut so getting the trimmed back greens to sprout will be a lot easier than working with a dried eye. I will post updates as they get going 😄 #ginger #gingerroot #wholefoods #organicgardening #containergardening #nourishing #zingiber #tropicalroots #spices #growyourownfood #eatrealfood #nonirradiated #wintergardening #indoorgardening #eatwhatyougrow #nonirradiatedspices #organicfoods #winterproject #dowhatmakesyouhappy #tropicalplants #growbabygrow🌱 #eatyourmedicine #plantmedicine #health
This is a picture of Georgia Southern's Biology building Greenhouse. Having a greenhouse makes this building green because it can produce its own plants and produce, even if it's not the proper growing season. Also, the more plants on the earth, more oxygen that is produced. We all like oxygen, right?
Original carrots were a rainbow of colors deep purple, ranging from lavender to deep eggplant and yellows. It wasn't till the 17th century, agriculturists in Europe started cultivating different varieties and developing an orange-colored carrot that had a more pleasing texture than its predecessor.
I've been growing mixed salad leaves in a pot on my balcony. Since the weather has turned cold and darker, I've brought it in to my kitchen window sill. It's having another growth spurt but I've noticed that the sides of some of the leaves are getting chomped. Closer inspection reveals these little nasties. They're tiny - less than 1mm - the whole leaf in this picture is about 3cm and you can only see about a third of the leaf here.
I'm left wondering whether to spray it with some kind of pesticide - what'd be safe to use while still hoping to eat the lettuce? Is there any organic alternative? Should I just throw the crop and start again next year? Or is it safe to eat anyway, given a thorough washing?
Oh how I’ve missed my Summer garden and the gifts it provides for breakfast, wandering around barefoot first thing in the morning, coffee in hand and seeing what nourishment is offered today Garlic scapes, zucchini and cherry tomatoes hot and garlicky over cold, thick yogurt, happy farm eggs, drizzle of good Spanish Eevo, smoked Maldon, and all the edible blossoms in the garden. Welcome to the first episode of the resumption of last summer’s daily Garden breakfasts 🌻🌱🌸 #breakfast #wholefoods #kitchengarden #seasonaleating #borage #calendula #edibleflowers #garlic #garlicscapes #summer #growyourownfood #nourishing #nutrition #zucchini #nourishingtraditions #earth #cleaneating
