Old fishing boat grounded near the harbour in Victoria, Prince Edward Island

Xysticus sp. on goldenrod

Female White-breasted Nuthatch foraging on the ground. Normally these little critters cling to the side of a tree trunk. In this case, she was content to scratch through the leaves and ground cover.

Not sure what type of ground cover this is but I thought it looked really beautiful. :D Victoria B.C. Canada

Yup that is yesterday and yup that is snow! Might be a heat wave out east but definitely not here. Several inches of snow fell all along the southern foothills yesterday which is actually needed given the dry conditions. Made it easy to see these ground squirrels, a Mom, who is barking at me and her two pups who came out of their burrow to see what all the fuss was about. Not at all what I was looking for but it was funny seeing all of these squirrels so very visible in the white snow. Spring time in Alberta is never dull and to think the summer solstice is only a day away!

Recently went on a wildlife photography trip with my Father and brother to Colorado. Saw plenty of these little squirrels all over the trails. This one happened to pose perfectly for me.

In Vienna you can find some populations of the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus), also known as the European souslik. It needs short turf in order to dig its tunnel system which it finds this on the steppes and in pasture, in dry banks, on sports fields, parks and lawns. These conditions are lost when changes in agricultural practice convert grassland into arable land and forest, or grazing ceases and the grass grows coarse and scrubland develops - which has happened a lot in the recent years. This is why the European ground squirrel is listed as being endangered by the IUCN in its Red List of Threatened Species. The population trend is downward and it is believed that, over the last ten years, the population has diminished by more than 30% due to the destruction of their habitat. These cute little critters are so much fun to watch and should be - as all living creatures - protected at all costs.

This little guy/gal popped up nearby as we were watching elephant seals on a beach near San Simeon, California. Seemed to want his/her picture taken.

Spathoglottis plicata is an evergreen, terrestrial plant with crowded pseudobulbs with pink to purple flowers. It is found from tropical and subtropical Asia to Australia and the western Pacific. Flowering occurs from September to April in Australia and in most months in China and New Guinea.

An adorable little ground squirrel that I photographed in Colorado on 5/25/22. I'm trying to go through my huge back catalogue of previously ignored photos and finally post a few of these.

The charismatic Southern Ground-Hornbills (Bucorvus leadbeateri) are considered internationally as 'Vulnerable' throughout their range in Africa by the IUCN, but within South Africa they have been classified as 'Endangered' , with their numbers outside of formally protected areas still declining. They are culturally important as the ‘thunder' or 'rain’ birds. (Kruger National Park, RSA).

Just before full time.

Premier League game V Crystal Palace.

I went to a woodmill some two years ago and saw a broken mirror lying discarded on the ground. It was in a musty and damp section at the back of a decaying wooden structure choked with planks and pieces of timber. I asked some of the guys there to hold the mirror up to their faces and I took some portrait photos. I finally returned to the sawmill recently (and gave the guys copies of the photos from two years earlier) and I was intrigued to see that the mirror has risen from the ashes and been promoted to pride of place on the wall.
