Hellevoetsluis - Fortresse Holland - Droogdok Jan Blanken
Droogdok Jan Blanken - the Dry dock Jan Blanken is a national monument built for the Dutch navy between 1798 and 1822 (architect Jan Blanken) in Hellevoetsluis for the construction and maintenance of ships. Equipped with new techniques such as a pump house (rebuilt in 2001, now a restaurant) with a James Watt steam engine and hundreds of piles were driven into the ground for the dock foundation. The dock has a ship door (type of lock, French invention), and devided in a maintenance and construction section, the walls of which are constructed as an amphitheater to facilitate easy ship maintenance. The naval frigate Euridice was the first ship to be docked.
After the departure of the Dutch Navy until 1970, in operation, completely restored in 2005, and now a museum with the still fully functioning dock for maintenance on ships.

Wie is het mooiste Lichtschip in Nederland?
Zonder twijfel is dat "Lichtschip 12 Noord Hinder" in Hellevoetsluis.
The light tower of Lichtschip 12 Noord Hinder was lit on the occasion of the Lichtjesavond event. It puts the historic port of Het Groote Dok in the spotlight and shares the light with everyone.

Hellevoetsluis - During the time of the United Provinces Hellevoetsluis was the naval port of the Admiralty of de Maze (Rotterdam) and could accommodate an entire fleet within a special land-enclosed fortress with harbour and dockyard facilities, accessible through a canal. Thanks to its strategic situation the town grew from the beginning of the 17th century to be the homeport for the Dutch war fleet. In later years the port was fortified more and more and Hellevoetsluis therefore became a unique combination of fortified town and naval port. The Admirals Maarten Tromp, Michiel de Ruyter and Piet Heyn had their home base here and in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution William III of Orange's invasion fleet departed from the port.

Historical steam crane Boele 8 (Est. 1945) that could run on rails along the dry dock Jan Blanken. Placed at the Dok years ago from the Boele shipyard in Bolnes but has no further connection with the Dok except for a nice object along the Dok. The crane does have a steam certificate, but it is no longer suitable for hoisting where there is a regular need in the Dry Dock and instead a mobile crane is hired.
The steam crane has been relocated at the Mechanical Heritage Center (MEC) in Dronten since October 2016.
