This terrific sign dates back to the 1950s, I believe. I shot this photograph in 2014; oddly, it was blue on this side and green on the other. In 2016, the neon was removed. Yes, even that wonderful neon grinder sandwich. (I revisited the sign in 2018 and took many photographs, but they just seem so sad, with all the neon gone. I've yet to share any of those shots.)

 

And, unfortunately, more destruction was to come -- it has been completely repainted, now brandishing the name of a taco shop, the new owner.

A stump grinder or stump cutter is a power tool or equipment attachment that removes tree stumps by means of a rotating cutting disk that chips away the wood.

This is my entry for the Kill Teal contest on The New Elementary.

Grinder, one of the two orphaned Grizzly bears on top of Grouse Mountain. Grinder is very playful and in this shot; was poking his head up and down playing hide and seek with his admiring human fans.

A Loram rail grinder is overtaken by Norfolk Southern train 376 on the Scioto River bridge in Downtown Columbus, Ohio.

I tried to make the best of a non-natural sighting and attempted to enhance in my photograph, the 'metallic/robotic' characteristics I saw in my mind's eye with this cicada. Enhanced by the metal fly screen on one of my house windows. And the common name also gave me inspiration - it is a razor grinder, so called due to its harsh and at times, ear splitting call.

 

Male razor grinders sing in large groups on the main trunks of tall eucalypts, especially spotted gum, Corymbia maculata. Here in Australia, this species of cicada is found along the east coast.

Late on Halloween night - Network Rail send out their rail grinder to make some groaning noises in the night. Rumbling through the delightful Lewes Station with the 19:32 Tonbridge Engineers Siding to Willingdon Junction. passing at just before 10 on Halloween.

 

31st October 2019.

50008 'Thunderer' exits Wickwar tunnel with Rail Grinders for testing, forming 4Z01 1245 Chaddesden Sdgs to Okehampton on 29th June 2017.

 

This followed the failure of DCR 31452 at Abbotswood Junction on on 25th June, en-route to Lydney. Two days later on 27th June 56303 collected the rail grinder, and 31452, and returned it to Chaddesden. A further two days later, with no other DCR locos available, 50008 was drafted in take the grinders to Devon.

 

The Network Rail rail grinding units were DR79301, DR79302, DR79303 and DR79304
