Maryland Midland's UBHF was climbing upgrade nearing Highfield with the Pride of the MMID leading.

The Heritage GP38-3 had a trio of G&W painted SD40M-2s helping out on the former Western Maryland main line.

Spring colors are emerging along the Blue Ridge mountains and it was a great day to get out of the "cornteen" as the Baltimorons would say.

You know the saying, rise and grind! While the city sleeps, we run the streets.

Maryland Midland's UBEG was grinding uphill into Emory Grove with CSX interchange on a sunny morning in mid-September.

The 3 EMDs were making quite the racket as they slowly ground uphill.

Patchy sun unfortunately decided not to swing in my favour here for a shot that would have been far more impressive.

60 085 grinds up Selside with the 6J84 Horton Quarry-Brindle Heath stone on the 21st November 2025.

One of the first spots I fell in love with on the mainline was this S-Curve near MP149. Once I could see it in sunlight the love affair was put on hold as the 430pm lighting was dead nose-on. However this would be the day that a heavy NRFF lost their 3rd engine and ground their way to White Haven Tunnel on the 1.23% at about 8mph. The snails pace not only made for 4 different photo angles in about 5 miles but also caused an hour delay off the normal which was enough time to allow the light to swing to the side for this shot. It's the 21st of May and the leaves still haven't popped but at least it's sunny.

Keeping with the CNJ theme today we'll take a look at the former CNJ portion of the Lehigh Division. R&N acquired what was kinda referred to as the middle portion of Conrail's Lehigh Line in 1996. A collection of mostly LV track from Lehighton to Mehoopany. The exceptions are the former CNJ for about 40 miles between White Haven and Laurel Run which was kinda folded into the LV's mainline when the CNJ pulled out of Pennsylvania in the 60's. The other exception being the former DL&W from Pittston to Scranton. The LV portion of the line is spectacularly scenic through the Lehigh Gorge and the descent towards Pittston however it has become at times simply hard to access and at other times very, very grown in. Many classic shots along the LV have been destroyed in ways that could only be undone by a massive wildfire and others are currently blocked or otherwise marred by stored oil cars. The former CNJ portion of the line does a whole lot of aiming into the sun for the current afternoon NRFF schedule between White Haven and Mountain Top (Solomons Gap) with plenty of access, a tunnel, searchlights, restored mileposts, a yard and even a signal bridge. So today we'll take a look at that as well as the twice-weekly (Mo-Th I think...) Crestwood Drill which rates a single SW8 and serves the only active customers between Lehighton and Pittston from the yard in Penobscot.

I got to tag along on a work trip to California with my wife a couple weeks ago. She had the weekend free so I convinced her she'd enjoy riding around Cajon Pass in a jeep watching the action. It was fun to actually go through some mud puddles and enjoy comfortable temperatures compared to previous trips where it was hot and dusty. She really enjoyed hanging out at Hill 582 where they do a great job maintaining the landscaped park despite a rough ride to get there. Shortly after arriving in the morning a northbound Union Pacific freight came along grinding upgrade. In the background are the San Gabriel mountains covered in fresh snow.

On the footpath just outside Edale.

Impressed that I not only was able to get this through the fence pretty clean, but to also be able to reach the entry to the Inner Loop here. Granted, early morning and cool fall temps helped as there was no thermal activity radiating yet but still... kind of ridiculous when I compare to previous outings and gear used.

Finally having a chance to start editing photos from a myriad of events over the past month using a rented EOS R5. I was also able to rent the 100-500mm but will initially be focusing on what the 800mm has to offer on this camera. Thoughts and impressions welcomed.

I suspect that there are many of us these recent days whose teeth are crushing and grinding at the constant blaring of so called Christmas songs in public places. This Eason image shows a crusher and grinder from Dawson's, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, which could save our teeth and the stress if we each had one to carry around with us!
