'Babies'
Straight out of a nightmare, barcode-faced babies climb up and down Prague's television tower.
The city of Prague is infamous for its unusual, often bizarre public art, much of which was created by Czech sculptor David Cerny. Another of his works can be found on the exterior of the Zizkov Television Tower, and it's the stuff of nightmares.
Miminka (Babies in English) consists of 10 fiberglass sculptures of babies crawling up and down the tower. Each approximately 11,5 feet long and 8,5 feet tall, and weighing 550 pounds, they seem to defy gravity. And if giant babies aren't creepy enough, their faces are replaced with barcodes.
The first of the Miminka sculptures was introduced in 1994 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and it then traveled across the world. In 2000, 10 of them were placed on the Television Tower's exterior, then as a temporary installation. They were met by a positive response, and soon it was decided to keep them permanently.
Perhaps due to the initial plan to have them there for a limited time, the original statues's durability was insufficient. They were replaced by new pieces in 2019: heavier, more durable, and better attached to the tower. The originals were removed in 2017 and returned to Cerny, who loaned them to Palm Springs as a temporary installation.
Eight more copies, made of bronze, can be found on Kampa Island in Prague. They were installed in 2008 and, unlike the originals, not crawling on the wall, but on the ground.
Whether that makes them more or less creepy - for being so much easier to see - is up to the viewer.

Bosco Verticale
Two very green residential towers cleaning the air in one of Europe's most polluted cities.
Opened in 2014 and called "the most exciting new tower in the world," Milan's Bosco Verticale, or "vertical forest" comprises two 27-story residential high-rises teeming with cantilevered balconies and planted with almost 900 trees and more than 2,000 shrubs and bushes.
The project was proposed by architect Stefano Boeri as part of his BioMilano: sic ideas for a bio-diverse metropolis. His firm describes the towers as "a model for a sustainable residential building, a project for metropolitan reforestation that contributes to the regeneration of the environment and urban biodiversity."
Bosco Verticale's extensive greenery provides apartment dwellers with shade in the summer and filtered sunlight in the winter, as well as cleaner air and reduced noise pollution. The buildings are also equipped with solar panels and a gray water recycling and irrigation system.

Legend has it the lovelorn tears of a princess and a shepherd boy formed the blue and green twin lakes in the Azores archipelago.
Jacob and Esau. Apollo and Artemis. Mary Kate and Ashley. People have always been fascinated with twins, and these twin lakes are no less interesting.
In a 22,000-year-old (at least) volcanic crater on the island of São Miguel in the Azores archipelago of Portugal, you'll find the blue and green lakes of Sete Cidades. While technically one body of water, the lagoon appears like two separate lakes - Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) and Lagoa Verde (Green Lake) - nearly separated by a narrow stretch of land with a bridge. The water is surrounded by a lush landscape of ancient subtropical forest, laurisilva (laurel forst), and blue hydrangea.
The twin lakes are often cited as one of Portugal's seven natural wonders, and for good reason.
While ecologically separate, they comprise the largest body of water in the Azorean archipelago and are an important freshwater source for the region. And their folklore is even more captivating.
Legend has it that a noble princess and a lowly shepherd fell in love, and their romantic liaisons took place in the hills over Sete Cidades where they could meet under the stars. The king discovered the clandestine lovers and forbade them to meet, as kings often do.The young princess had emerald green eyes, and the shepherd boy's eyes were hydrangea blue. When their romance was dashed they each cried a lake of tears, one green and one blue.
While science has proven the lakes to be a single body of water that simply reflects sunlight in two different colors, it's a beautiful destination that easily conveys romantic fairy tales past and present.
Don't miss the King's viewpoint - King Carlos I, not the mean father of yore - where the Portuguese ruler and his wife, Queen Amelia, stood during their visit in 1901 and declared it the most beautiful spot in the Azores.

Roman Polanski's Neptune
Massive galleon from a box-office bomb docked in Genoa.
In the early 1980s, Roman Polanski told Paramount Pictures that his new tale of treachery on the high seas, "Pirates," would cost $15 million. When it was finally released at Cannes in 1986, its budget had ballooned to $40 million, its budget buckling under exotic filming locations, special effects and a larger-that-life galleon called the Neptune.
At the time, the Neptune, was hailed as the most expensive movie "prop" of all time, and its dedication to detail shined through. Besides the steel hull of the ship and a diesel-powered motor, the galleon actually had fully functioning sails and rigging. Along with true-to-form galleon infrastructure, the ship was intricately carved and painted to perfectly resemble a Spanish galleon, complete with a giant Neptune figurehead. Oddly enough, the Neptune is actually larger than a historical galleon, and some of the budget could have possibly been spared by a closer adherence to reality.
But, Polanski was never concerned with reality or consequences and he built the Neptune in his image; larger-than-life. Today, the Neptune is still on the high seas, and the Tunisian-built rig is docked in the Port of Genoa, where its looming rigging towers over modern Italian boats.

The Gehry Buildings of Düsseldorf Harbor
Twisted buildings adorn the banks of the Rhine river.
A lot of harbor towns have seen better days. As developed economies change and resources realign, industries and the cities or even regions they support quickly rise and fall like the very tide that sweeps in and out of the bay. Fishing isn't what it once was. In the Information Age, seafaring, like many methods of transport, has become less important. And the seaports and harbor towns that went along with these industries are in dire conditions in several countries around the world.
Düsseldorf was one such town. Once a mighty shipping port and a key cog in European trade power from the late Roman Empire all the way through the Second World War, Düsseldorf was named capital city of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia at the end of the latter. The second half of the 20th Century was not as kind to the city, however.
Like so many industrial cities, the seaports of Düsseldorf were those faced with the steepest decline as the Western economies shifted from manufacturing and transport to information and finance. When one of the city's largest companies, Mannesmann, closed their operations, many lost their jobs and the harbor itself became dilapidated.
In a bid to bring the surroundings back to life, the East harbor has started the long, deliberate march toward redevelopment, which has already met grand success.
It's a familiar story: As shipping companies and their associated docks, boats and equipment fall by the wayside, literally into the water they were built on, modern buildings are rising to take their place. Corporations and development firms looking for cheap land with a nice view create feeding frenzies as one after another snap up the abandoned waterfront.
Now, Düsseldorf Harbor is home to some spectacular postmodern architecture, including buildings by the architect most closely associated with contemporary status symbols signifying corporate success: Frank Gehry.
Easily the most famous buildings in the new-look Düsseldorf Harbor are three twisted constructions by Gehry, spiraling and stretching into the sky in his iconic style, their mirrored walls and matte white finishes symbolizing the modernist aspirations of the harbor. They may not be as obviously utilitarian as the shipyards of old, but the gleaming facades do illustrate the newly stated purpose of the local harbor side industry.
Düsseldorf never lost its status as a hub of art, finance and business on the Rhine, and the declining harbor was out of step with the rest of the city for quite a while. But now, due to the redevelopment spearheaded by the Gehry buildings, a higher tide seems to be rolling back into Düsseldorf Harbor.

A tribute to smugglers and the Butter Wars.
Besides people and events, monuments can also be dedicated to a profession, usually, these are inspiring professions. In Baarle there is one such monument, except it is dedicated to the life of smugglers.
This is not too strange for the twin city of Baarle-Nassau and Baarle-Hertog, as a strange border situation has been present since the 11th-century. This made the region a smuggler's paradise.
Today, the borders are mainly touristic and not enforced since both countries are part of the European Union, but before that, the borders were policed and abused by those trying to get items or people from one jurisdiction to another.
Perhaps most notable is the "Butter War," a period in which many smugglers took butter from the Netherlands to Belgium because of the price differences. In the Netherlands, people preferred margarine, and butter prices were low. In Belgium everyone used butter, and thus prices were high due to the demand, with prices being two or three times just across the border. This led to many people smuggling butter both on foot and in cars, sometimes resulting in wild car chases across the area.
The statue commemorates this past, as well as the 1,000 year anniversary of the current situation. It was created in 1992 by Constant Grooten, but was officially installed and unveiled four years later by Sjaak Mulders en Mon van Casteren, two border security guards who drove around in armored cars and spread caltrops during the height of the Butter War.
