once I wanted to be the greatest,

and then came the rush of the flood,
stars at night turned deep to dust.
I've been taking pictures of Great Blue Herons as long as I have been taking pictures of birds. The colors, the regal bearing, the grace despite its size. In Florida I had a chance to study one up very close. I think the image says it all about this bird.
I recently visited an university for a try-out day where I followed a couple of lectures for philosophy. It was a rather interesting experience. Though I admittedly did not find all the lectures particularly interesting, there was one that stuck by me. [read more...]

There are some lovely Cyclamen flowers growing on a hillside near our house. Every year I tromp up the hill to pluck one or two blossoms before they disappear. What a treat to see them once again. I'd always been intrigued about their form, but found myself excited about the shapes found inside the Cyclamen flower. There are so many hidden delights in this glorious world!

I hiked up to the top of the earthen dam that forms Lake Mercer because the colliding weather fronts that afternoon promised and delivered a very interesting sky. The trail across the top of the berm brought to mind the theme song from "The Hobbit" hence the title of this shot.

The EsterhĂĄzy Palace at FertĆd is the greatest Baroque-Rococo monument complex in Hungary. On the site of the Palace, Duke Joseph EsterhĂĄzy initiated the construction of a hunting lodge with twenty-two rooms in 1720, based on the plans of the Viennese architect, Erhard Martinelli. However, the golden age of the Palace began when Nicholas EsterhĂĄzy (also known as MiklĂłs âthe Magnificentâ) succeeded to the ducal title.
Utilising the grandeur of 18th century Baroque-Rococo architecture, Duke Nicholas enlarged the palace, and with the help of Nicolaus Jakoby; he created a large garden with several alleys. At the French Garden with an Opera House and a Marionette theatre and employed German theatre companies as well as Italian and French ballet dancers. The orchestra of the Palace led by Joseph Haydn the great musician and composer, the chamber composer and conductor at EszterhĂĄza, was well-known all over Europe.
The second golden period of EszterhĂĄza came about at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The suites of the Palace and the French Garden were restored for Duke Nicholas EsterhĂĄzy IV. and his wife, Countess Margaret CzirĂĄky. Enchanted by EszterhĂĄza the Countess spent her dowry on the restoration of the palace and the gardens. The modernisation of the park started in 1902. Among the designers of the gardens was Anton Umlauft, one of the best-known gardeners in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
Had a hard time leaving Texas because the clouds this morning had me mesmerized. I kept stopping and taking pictures as the greatest Artist/Creator of all showed off with a constantly changing cloudscape. This was down along the border on US-90, not much in the way of landscape, but who needs landscapes when the heavens play.

No, I'm not possessed.
Just frustrated b/c I couldn't get a decent photo of the spectacular blood moon. Long story.
But I did get to see it.....all of it.
Wasn't that a sight!!
Still.....came in feeling arrrrrrgh and then the devil made me do this.

To my greatest regret, I have to inform you that today is the last Poppy Monday (at least for this year). Next year there will (hopefully) be replenished again.
But considering the number of poppy fields I was able to visit this year (one), I am more than satisfied with the yield, not to say happy.
And so I wish you all a week (what else could come next) full of happiness and satifaction. And maybe a little anticipation for what's to come next year. And next year. And in the next... You understand the principle. đ
Zu meinem allergröĂten Bedauern muss ich Euch mitteilen, dass heute der (zumindest fĂŒr dieses Jahr) letzte Mo(h)ntag ist. NĂ€chstes Jahr gibts dann (hoffentlich) wieder Nachschub.
Doch gemessen an der Anzahl der Mohnfelder, die ich in diesem Jahr besuchen konnte (eins) bin ich mit der Ausbeute mehr als zufrieden, um nicht zu sagen glĂŒcklich.

Sweet corn is one of summer's greatest crops. When it is in season we eat quite a bit of it. There are quite a few roadside stands around here so it is easily available without having to go to the grocery store. I usually buy two dozen at a time and whatever we don't eat at suppertime goes into the freezer to eat the rest of the year. It is very easy to do. Simply hold a cob (it must be either fully cooked or blanched) on top of the hole of the bundt pan, then you slice off the kernels with a good sharp knife. As you do this, the kernels fall into the bundt pan. Then you just need to spoon them up and put however much you want in either a small or medium size freezer Ziploc bag, squeeze out the extra air from the bag and pop it in the freezer. We probably have about 20 bags of corn stored in our freezer. It really is easy and you get the same great fresh taste of summer corn. To serve it later all you have to do is boil it on the stove top and drain before serving. I prefer it this way because you don't get all those annoying kernel pieces stuck in your teeth. Am I right? ;-) Haha!

Maybe you can listen to the sound of the sea, if you hold the found to the ear*. Unfortunately, this small snail shell has a hole and it is already a bit worn over the years in the ocean. Nevertheless, this snail shell is valuable to me. Well â I did not dive into the eerie depths of the water â I just picked it up from the beach. That was not difficult, that was by the way while walking on the soft sand. But now that I have the snail shell lying on my desk here, brought from a faraway land, it's important to me and especially ...

Manchmal findet man die gröĂten SchĂ€tze ganz tief verborgen, wie z. B. in den Tiefen des Ozeans auf dem Meeresgrund. Da, wo sich ein kleiner Lichtstrahl verirrt hat und etwas zum Glitzern bringt, wie versilbert. Eine Kleinigkeit vielleicht, die fĂŒr einen etwas Besonderes hat. Vielleicht kann man dem Meeresrauschen lauschen, wenn man sich das Gefundene ans Ohr* hĂ€lt. Dieses kleine SchneckengehĂ€use hat leider ein Loch und auch sonst ist es ĂŒber die Jahre im Ozean bereits etwas verschlissen. Trotzdem ist diese SchneckenhĂŒlle fĂŒr mich wertvoll. Gut â ich bin nicht in die unheimlichen Tiefen des Wassers abgetaucht â ich habe sie ganz schlicht vom Strand aufgelesen. Das war nicht schwer, das war ganz nebenbei beim Gehen auf dem weichen Sand. It is said that the sound of the sea should be heard in shells. It is possible to record the noise of the shell with a microphone without a human close by. The noise would then be heard on the recording. In fact, this is a resonance phenomenon: as in a wind instrument, there is an air column in the shell, which has a certain natural frequency. That's the sound that comes when you make the shell swing. The air column is vibrated by barely noticeable sounds in the environment, whose frequencies correspond approximately to the natural frequency of the shell. As a result, these otherwise inaudible ambient noise is significantly enhanced. The resulting sound mixture is perceived by people as noise.

Es heiĂt, dass in Muscheln das Rauschen des Meeres zu hören sein soll. Man kann nĂ€mlich das Rauschen der Muschel mit einem Mikrofon aufnehmen, ohne dass sich ein Mensch in der NĂ€he befindet. Auf der Aufnahme wĂ€re das Rauschen dann zu hören. TatsĂ€chlich handelt es sich hierbei um ein ResonanzphĂ€nomen: Wie in einem Blasinstrument befindet sich in der Schale eine LuftsĂ€ule, die eine bestimmte Eigenfrequenz besitzt. Das ist jener Ton, welcher entsteht, wenn man die Muschel zum Schwingen bringt. Die LuftsĂ€ule wird durch kaum merkliche GerĂ€usche in der Umgebung, deren Frequenzen ungefĂ€hr der Eigenfrequenz der Muschel entsprechen, in Schwingung versetzt. Dadurch werden diese sonst nicht hörbaren UmgebungsgerĂ€usche erheblich verstĂ€rkt. Das entstehende Tongemisch wird vom Menschen als Rauschen wahrgenommen.
