The climb starts heavy and hard. From the bottom of the hill at Clifton, AZ, Freeport McMoRan's mine-owned railroad points to the sky and begins its ascent towards one of the US's largest copper mines at Morenci a short distance away, a mere 6 rail miles if we are keeping track. But those 6 miles are hardly insignificant, challenging FMI's fleet of modified GP38s in consists of 4 or 5 to prove their worth, dragging cars delivered and interchanged from shortline Arizona Eastern up a literal mountain to keep the production of copper ore flowing at a maximum rate of 115,000 metric tons per day. The incline? Try over 5%. That's one of the steepest (the steepest?) active climbs on a traction railway in North America. So despite only having been burdened with 13 cars, this 4 pack of 38s has their work cut out for them, already grasping for every mph they can grab before the hill rips whatever progress was made away. They will balance out well under 10 mph as the climb thickens, but ultimately victory is in their hands as they will conquer the mountain as they most always do.
This is another view from Glacial Park, looking west. From the summit of a glacial kame (a hill created by glacial deposition), you have a view of this extensive plain of rural Illinois. I had had this view twice before and imagined it covered in a light mist. I anticipated to have a view with a mist that morning but mist didn't generate. Instead, I had a clear view that overlooks the entire park and beyond. Wildflowers were in bloom along the Nippersink River. I took a zoomed-in photo around the river with one of the bridges in center. The yellow flowers were in all the spaces in that photo. Sunlight was shining onto the flowers. It looks more like a spring scene instead of late summer. It is my favourite photo.
This place may look quiet, but the sound of traffic never ceased white I was there. There is a country highway outside the park, between the plain and the woods. There is a traffic noise even on a country road like this on the outskirts far from Chicago city limits. I have never been to the areas seen in this photo or beyond because I never had a reason to go. I checked the areas I would be seeing in this photo on the map. The farthest point in this photo is probably only in the eastern half of McHenry County. The county's limit is about ten miles away from the park, then there is another 60 liner miles or so to the state border. This state is immensely large. I always have difficulty grasping its scale.

Wild Indigo Duskywing skipper butterfly balancing on a grass leaf during a stiff breeze as it shows-off its exquisitely detailed wing patterning.
Common and abundant.
This image employs an unconventional top-down viewing angle. Imagine looking at top of an airfoil and looking down. In this case, the skipper butterfly is grasping the plant's seed-head with its feet, then bending its body and wings down as it arcs around forward so its body tail-tip becomes positioned under its head. As such, this view features the unique graphic design pattern displayed on the insect's upper-wing and forward edge (front shoulder?).
Additionally, this position helps moderate heat gain. by reducing the amount of body surface area to the heat of the bright midday sun.
Butterfly body flexibility and the ability to make micro-adjustments to take advantage of its setting, as needed, constantly amaze.

The Lanner Falcon is resident in Africa, southeast Europe and parts of Asia. The Lanner is outstandingly maneuverable and typically frequents open dry grassland and steppe, requiring large areas for hunting and cliffs for nesting.
They feed on a range of small birds and mammals. Like other falcons, the Lanner is an active hunter and rarely feeds on carrion. Prey is caught by the impact of hitting it at speeds of up to 100mph or by grasping it with their elongated toes and very sharp talons.
Meet Edwina Paynesworth-Wiggens, former star of the Pennywise Circus, world renowned tightrope walker, and wild animal tamer. Her life was anything but normal at home and people always looked at her family strangely. She never fit in anywhere. Even being voted homecoming queen by her class turned out to be nothing but a cruel joke.
Edwina never knew real joy and happiness until she met Hayworth Wiggens and her whole world turned upside down, literally. He was a dashing young man, driving his crazy clown car through their little town, and even through his clown makeup and puffy suit she could see this was the man she loved. Before she knew it she was swept up in the life of a circus performer. Not only did her romance with her clown flourish but her skills and career skyrocketed to fame and fortune.
The days of torment behind her, she lived the life she always dreamed of with her love by her side. Until one fateful moonlit evening her world came crashing down. An unsupervised child wandered away from his family at the circus show and somehow managed to trip over a cord, causing it to come loose and start a chain reaction that turned into one of the worst recorded circus disasters ever known. Edwina was in the middle of her act on the tightrope, her love doing a clown rescue act below in a cram packed car full of his clown posse. As the tightrope came loose the shrieks and cries of the crowd could not silence the thoughts in her mind as she plummeted towards the ground. There was no safety net. Her body came to a halt as it crashed into the clown car below, a fatal blow to all of the clowns inside.
The papers the next day could only show the big red shoes and honking noses laying scattered on the ground. They couldn't show her hand, plunged into Hayworth's chest, found grasping his heart as she lay there unconscious. They couldn't show the expression on her face when she awoke and her sanity quickly slipped away in a fleeting moment. Edwina survived the fall but would never be the same. Her family brought her back home but she was broken in mind, heart, and soul.

This scorpion, seen on the island of Samos, Greece, is thought to be Mesobuthus gibbosus. Scorpions are predatory arachnids of the order Scorpiones. They have eight legs and are easily recognized by the pair of grasping pedipalps and the narrow, segmented tail, often carried in a characteristic forward curve over the back, ending with a venomous stinger.

Grain. Lots of grain.....and we're not talking wheat here!
First there was mist, but no sun. Then there was sun, but no mist. So I played with this in Lightroom...Colour Efex...Photoshop...and back to Lightroom! Hence the grainyness. (Yes spellcheck, that is the word I want, and I do not wish to replace it with greasiness, graspingness or migranes..)

We need in our inhabiting of the world to take very seriously the fact that the world resists being controlled and digested by human subjects. We repeatedly act as if control and digestion were the only things that mattered; and this of course explains a lot about the ecological crisis that we currently face. But if we return to the centrality of time and difficulty and embodied labour, there is really no way round grasping the fact that we as bodies belong in a world where bodily processes connect us to a material world to which we are not superior. This in itself imposes on us a more patient, a more attentive, perhaps even more ‘reverent’ approach to the environment we live in. There’s no great novelty in making the point, but it may as well be made: how we think knowledge works affects how we approach our environment.

The days passed, a beauty of light, a tangled flower weeping as I tug it out of the dirt,
The whole world an oyster, a brilliant natural feast and dessert,
Oh how the wind caresses me, my hair against my skin,
My fingers slid against a shiny rock, it's colorful kin,
The scent of perfumed floral, a dampness in the leaves,
The solidarity of the branches, as they grow high in the trees,
A firefly dances ahead, just out of my reach.
The soft earth inviting rain, to drench the the higher Leaf
Grasping the fragile stems, a blue 💙 firework 🎆 of forgotten snap shots,
My eyes travel from one to another, all dainty connected azure dots,
My fingers touch the tip of one as I bring it close to my nose,
The sweet scent of beautiful mornings 🌄, and an evening ✨ that comes to a close,
If I strain to remember, those things I must have forgot,
It still washes away like a memory, one I tossed away for naught,
I know in the darkest night, My existence and compassion still survive,
And to forget me, is to never have loved me, I come to have derive,
Forget me not my sweet grounding presence. Forget me not. Tree of Life
For this world 🌎 is ours together, and with growth ✨ we shall be rife.
This Barred Owl was very close to the path at Circle B Bar Reserve, Florida. Yet even with it hooting it still took a while to find him in the Spanish moss hanging from the trees.
Barred owls are highly active during twilight (making them a “crepuscular” predator) and are more likely to be seen during the day than owls with strictly nocturnal habits.
The feet of the owl are more adaptable than that of any other raptor. Their toes can position themselves either two in front, two in back like woodpeckers, or three in front, one in back, like most other birds. This makes perching and grasping prey more fool proof.

"Gone, thought I lost my mind
Creature without a spine
Took back what should be mine
Thrown in the deep end
Trouble, I gained a voice
I’m not your shiny toy
Left me without a choice
What were you thinking?
Dig my grave
Take my blame
There’s no love lost
When I’m the strong one
Never changed
Gone astray
There’s no love lost
When you’re the wrong one
I’ll never be the same
Locked in your misеry
Needed some room to breathе
Cut ties so easily
I’ll be my hero
Grasping for sanity
Won’t be your casualty
Done with this apathy
I’m back from the dead
Dig my grave
Take my blame
There’s no love lost
When I’m the strong one
Never changed
Gone astray
There’s no love lost
When you’re the wrong one
I’ll never be the same
I’ll never be the same
Never, never, never, never gonna give the power back to you
Never, never, never, never gonna give the power back to you
Never, never, never, never gonna give the power back to you
Never, never, never, never gonna give the power back to you
Dig my grave
Take my blame
There’s no love lost

The Royal Grand Palace is a complex of buildings at the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam and later Thailand since 1782. It consists of not only royal and throne halls, but also a number of government offices as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It covers an area of 218,000 square metres and is surrounded by four walls, 1900 metres in length. After King Rama I ascended to the throne in 1782, the palace was built. Fortunately, after the covid period, it is not yet busy with tourists. Thailand has just ended their quarantine policy. Face masks are no longer mandatory. Great to visit the Grand Palace one more time now. The Phra Ubosot, or ordination hall, occupies almost the entire southern part of the temple complex. The Ubosot is surrounded by a low wall; this separation emphasizes the sacred character of the building. The wall contains eight small pavilions with high spires, each with a double bai sema stone covered in gold leaf. In Thai religious architecture, such stones traditionally denote a sacred boundary within which the ordination of monks could be performed.
Impressive 200 years of royal history and architecture at the Grand Palace in Bangkok with more than 100 buildings. The Royal Grand Palace has been the official residence of the kings of Siam. It is the city's biggest tourist attraction and a pilgrimage destination for devout Buddhists. Construction of the Ubosot began during the reign of Rama I in 1783; as such, the building is one of the oldest structures in the temple. The Ubosot was built to house the Buddha statue known as the Emerald Buddha, which the king captured in 1779 from Vientiane, Laos. The hall is surrounded by columns that support a massive roof. The roof is covered with blue, yellow and orange glazed tiles. The outer walls are covered with traditional Thai decorations of gold leaf and colored glass. The next level is a lotus-design pedestal in colored glass. The next level above is decorated with the Garuda. One hundred and twelve Garudas, each grasping two Naga serpents in their claws, surround all four sides of the Ubosot. They are gilded with gold leaf and inlaid with glass mosaic. The vahana or vehicle of the god is the mythical Garuda. A creature of great strength and loyalty, the Garuda has been adopted as the national emblem of Thailand.

We no longer understand how God can fill the world with himself. For people of Western societies, the world has gradually become empty of meaning. . . . Gone is the intelligence of love capable of grasping the truth and beauty of creation from its origins, from God who contains it and nourishes it with himself. Instead, it has been replaced by a skeptical and cold rationality that moves among things without penetrating into their deepest roots.

“Falling in love is very real, but I used to shake my head when people talked about soul mates, poor deluded individuals grasping at some supernatural ideal not intended for mortals but sounded pretty in a poetry book. Then, we met, and everything changed, the cynic has become the converted, the skeptic, an ardent zealot.” .....
Like a rumble of thunder in the distance,
a fine spray of dust kicked up, a storm

the stallion in full gallop, the jockey hunched,
grasping the dark mane hear only silence:
in this moment they are in another world.

. . . and I will leave. But the birds will stay, singing:
and my garden will stay, with its green tree,
with its water well.
Many afternoons the skies will be blue and placid,
and the bells in the belfry will chime,
as they are chiming this very afternoon.
The people who have loved me will pass away,
and the town will burst anew every year.
But my spirit will always wander nostalgic
in the same recondite corner of my flowery garden.
I am happy to say that the brown egg in yesterday's post was not harmed in the making of the image. I can not say the same for this white egg, but then I could hardly expect it.
This was more countertop fun. I brought in this vice, some vicegrips and a spring clamp in hopes of securing the whisk that I had been using. Then the idea of a hefty looking clamp grasping a delicate egg entered my mind.
A black towel was again used for the background. The vice was being held up by vice-grips clamped onto them and the vice-grips/ clamp combination was prevented from tipping by placing a heavy book on the vice-grips. Kind of a silly setup, but it worked. Again I used a little LCD flashlight that has an option for red light. Processed to taste using masks, both auto and manual and even some spot dodging and burning.
All in all it was a lot of fun and I am very happy with the result.

Grasshoppers are a group of insects belonging to the suborder Caelifera. They are amongst what are possibly the most ancient living groups of chewing herbivorous insects, dating back to the early Triassic around 250 million years ago.
Grasshoppers are typically ground-dwelling insects with powerful hind legs which allow them to escape from threats by leaping vigorously. Their front legs are shorter and used for grasping food. As hemimetabolous insects, they do not undergo complete metamorphosis; they hatch from an egg into a nymph or "hopper" which undergoes five moults, becoming more similar to the adult insect at each developmental stage. The grasshopper hears through the tympanal organ which can be found in the first segment of the abdomen attached to the thorax; while its sense of vision is in the compound eyes, the change in light intensity is perceived in the simple eyes (ocelli). At high population densities and under certain environmental conditions, some grasshopper species can change colour and behavior and form swarms. Under these circumstances, they are known as locusts.
Today I tried out a new trail called The Devil's Escalator.
That's me pictured in this self portrait.
He's got a dumb smile on his face because he thinks (despite being told how grueling the uphill was) that he just completed the Devil's Escalator. Little did he know that he was merely half way done (the easy half) and just around that mountain is the steeper, rockier, uglier part of the trail.
A second picture - an actual trail completion picture would reveal him with no dumb smile - he would be off his bike (which was tossed aside) grasping his knees and fighting to calm his breathing before his lungs exploded.
It probably took a full 15 minutes to gather himself before he was ready to take on the reward (also known as the downhill)
An old face in a familiar place, stripped of some of its polish yet still grasping to its pride, has assumed the foremost position of the 663 local on the Ottuwma Sub, creeping through the caynon-like brick-and-mortar back alleys of Burlington in search of headroom to complete its setout. A silver anniversary beyond the monumental mega merger that dissolved the green giant into a sea of orange, the white alligator "B" on cascade is now nothing more than a novelty in its namesake, a subtle reminder of who ruled this town from 1970-1995. Two more letters and a rebranding of corporate image later, the mighty BN has lost most of its relevancy, but for a few fleeting moments in the town for which it is named, it has the command over its successor, racing to complete its work in what little light remains before resuming its westward trip across the Iowa farmland in the pitch of night.
I have only seen this species a few times EVER, so seeing this mating behavior was very special! Initially, the male was seen nearby with something in his beak, and then he flew to where the female was perched and they assumed this pose for at least a minute - a very long time as typically such moments are very fleeting in birds! This ritual of mutually grasping the "gift" (which looks a bit like a green caterpillar) while mating is a well-recorded behavior in this species.
