“Rapport” was the theme of this year’s Young Alumni Lecture Series sponsored by the department of art & design and organized by the student chapter of AIGA|The Professional Association for Design at Ohio Northern University. Based on recommendations from the faculty, the lecture series brought to campus four young alumni to share personal career challenges and successes since graduation with current students.
The Young Alumni Lecture Series was scheduled for Saturday, March 27, 3p.m. at the Affinity Commons Building.
The panel of ONU design alumni discussed what it was like to send résumés and cover letters to employers and graduate schools, to have a portfolio reviewed in hopes of getting a job, and a personal perspective of the current job market.
Prof. Brit Rowe, department chair and associate professor in design, acknowledges, “Students were able to engage in an open dialogue with the speakers about the importance of specific classes and how the students might best position themselves for employment or graduate school. This is also a great opportunity for alumni to give back to the education process at Ohio Northern.”
The goal of the AIGA/ONU student chapter is to get the students involved in the local design community, create a community of their own and help them build leadership skills that will be valuable as they move into the professional world.
Ohio Northern offers both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees with majors in advertising design, art education, graphic design and studio arts. The department of A&D holds memberships in national organizations such as the National Art Education Association, College Art Association, Foundations in Art: Theory and Education and the National Council on Education of Ceramic Arts. The department is recognized in the second edition of “Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians and Writers” as one of the best creative programs nationwide. This artwork is about the contrast between animalism and humanism, organic beauty and structured mechanical elements. It can be viewed as an environmental issue in a sense of a need for more conservational care, the creature being masked from pollution because of deprived attention to these matters. I have 8 projects to finish by Sept 8. Ya! woo. This is definitely a departure from what my usual stuff is. I'm trying to show more range in my portfolio. i know that i'm already pretty adept at flat images and shapes, but i'm trying to push myself with images and type.
