It is the fastest land animal. The only extant member of the genus Acinonyx, the cheetah was formally described by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1775. The cheetah is characterised by a slender body, deep chest, spotted coat, small rounded head, black tear-like streaks on the face, long thin legs and long spotted tail. Its lightly built, slender form is in sharp contrast with the robust build of the big cats, making it more similar to the cougar. The cheetah reaches 70 to 90 cm (28 to 35 in) at the shoulder, and weighs 21–72 kg (46–159 lb).

The northern red bishop is a stocky 13–15 cm. bird. The breeding male is scarlet apart from his black head and waistcoat, and brown wings and tail. The conical bill is thick and black.

The non-breeding male is pale yellow streaked above and shading to whitish below. It has a buff supercilium. Females are similar, but smaller. Young birds have wider pale fringes on their flight feathers.

It can weigh up to 350 kg (770 lb), males being slightly bigger than females. Grévy's zebra is considerably larger, while the mountain zebra is somewhat smaller.

Life has a way of getting in the way of my photography, but I'm glad to have finally found an opportunity to indulge and a willing subject. After record levels of rain in Sydney, this week has been dry and sunny. It was safe again to take the camera out.

Kristen's hair style and color immediately jumped out at me. She had sunnies on which made me hesitate momentarily, though I decided to approach her anyhow. I caught up with her just after she crossed the street and asked if I could take her portrait, to which she immediately and without any hesitation, agreed.

Stuck in the middle of foot traffic and with mediocre light, I took a chance and asked if she'd walk around the corner to a spot I've used before. My intention was to take a step back and compose some leading lines into the photo, but when I noticed one of the walls would make a suitable background that idea became an afterthought. Old habits die hard.

Kristen works in graphic design near where I shot her and was just out on her lunch break. After positioning her against the background and setting her up with the reflector, a group of her coworkers walked by. Heckling ensued!

She was incredibly comfortable in front of the lens and responded to direction quite readily. Surely she had done this before. And with her work being in a visual and creative field, it was not a surprise how stylish she was. In a few months, Kristen will be leaving Sydney and heading to the US with her husband. We had a chat about the process of getting rid of all your stuff. It's amazing how much one can accumulate. But it is so very cathartic to eliminate all but the essentials.

Thanks heaps for your time and for participating in my project, Kristen. I hope you like how the photo has turned out. Let me know if you'd like a larger copy, as I'd be happy to send one to you. Best of luck in NYC!

Look at that, three in a row composed in the center of the frame!

Now that I've incorporated a reflector into my portrait taking, it's hard to imagine not having it. What I need to remember though, is to choose a color (silver, white or gold) that is appropriate for the day's conditions. The last time I had intentionally gone out shooting it was more overcast, so I had the gold cover on. Whoops.

My 85mm continues to give me some issues as well. Even shooting at f/2.2, not all the shots came out sharp. Perhaps I need to get it looked at? I wonder if the micro-adjustment will resolve this...

Constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated!

The bar-headed goose is one of the world's highest-flying birds, having been heard flying across Mount Makalu – the fifth highest mountain on earth at 8,481 m (27,825 ft) – and apparently seen over Mount Everest – 8,848 m (29,029 ft) – although this is a second-hand report with no verification. This demanding migration has long puzzled physiologists and naturalists: "there must be a good explanation for why the birds fly to the extreme altitudes... particularly since there are passes through the Himalaya at lower altitudes, and which are used by other migrating bird species." In fact, bar-headed geese have never been directly tracked (using GPS or satellite logging technology) flying higher than 6,540 metres (21,460 ft), and it is now believed that they do take the high passes through the mountains.

The greylag is the largest and bulkiest of the grey geese of the genus Anser, but is more lightly built and agile than its domestic relative. It has a rotund, bulky body, a thick and long neck, and a large head and bill. It has pink legs and feet, and an orange or pink bill with a white or brown nail (hard horny material at tip of upper mandible). It is 74 to 91 centimetres (29 to 36 in) long with a wing length of 41.2 to 48 centimetres (16.2 to 18.9 in). It has a tail 6.2 to 6.9 centimetres (2.4 to 2.7 in), a bill of 6.4 to 6.9 centimetres (2.5 to 2.7 in) long, and a tarsus of 7.1 to 9.3 centimetres (2.8 to 3.7 in). It weighs 2.16 to 4.56 kilograms (4.8 to 10.1 lb), with a mean weight of around 3.3 kilograms (7.3 lb). The wingspan is 147 to 180 centimetres (58 to 71 in). Males are generally larger than females, with the sexual dimorphism more pronounced in the eastern subspecies rubirostris, which is larger than the nominate subspecies on average.

(Intermediate Egret)This species, as its scientific name implies, is intermediate in size between the great egret and smaller white egrets like the little egret and cattle egret, though nearer to little than great. It is about 56–72 cm (22–28 in) long with a 105–115 cm (41–45 in) wingspan and weighs c. 400 g (14 oz), with all-white plumage, generally dark legs and a thickish yellow bill.

The grey crowned crane is about 1 m (3.3 ft) tall, weighs 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs), and has a wingspan of 2 m (6.5 ft). Its body plumage is mainly grey. The wings are predominantly white, but contain feathers with a range of colours, with a distinctive black patch at the very top.

The head has a crown of stiff golden feathers. The sides of the face are white, and there is a bright red inflatable throat pouch. The bill is relatively short and grey, and the legs are black. They have long legs for wading through the grasses. The feet are large, yet slender, adapted for balance rather than defence or grasping. The sexes are similar, although males tend to be slightly larger. Young birds are greyer than adults, with a feathered buff face.

Its small size, fine dark bill, dark legs and quicker movements distinguish this species from all waders except the other dark-legged stints. It can be distinguished from these in all plumages by its combination of a fine bill tip, unwebbed toes and long primary projection. The call is a sharp "stit".
