Casa de Baco, Complutum, Alcalá de Henares, Comunidad de Madrid
Located in the former Madre de Dios Dominican Convent School, founded in the 17th century, the Alcalá de Henares Regional Archaeological Museum provides an educational review of the history of the region that makes up the Community of Madrid from prehistoric times to the present day.
Its collection reveals the history of Madrid through material evidence of its past. In this way, it includes the evolution of the landscape and fauna until the arrival of early man, the life of these settlers, the first producing societies, the Roman occupation, the Middle Ages and the transfer of the Spanish Court to Madrid from Valladolid. It also has a section devoted to archaeology as a science and its presence in the Community Madrid.
The museum has guided tours available of its permanent and temporary exhibitions, and for people with visual impairments. All tours must be booked in advance by calling 91 879 66 66.
Coinciding with its 25th anniversary, the centre will be known as the Regional Archaeological and Paleontological Museum as of June 2022, incorporating the Valley of the Neanderthals -Pinilla del Valle- and Llano de la Horca -Santorcaz- sites.

At the end of the nineteenth century the family who owned this vineyard also owned a substantial Queenslander homestead with chimney places, can you see it beyond the vineyard?
An example of one such farming enterprise were the Childs family. The Childs’ arrived aboard a ship called the “Fortitude” in 1849. They were pioneer farmers and winegrowers of Nudgee. They were later to go on to produce quality wines and champagnes that won awards in overseas exhibitions.
Harvesting of the grapes nowadays with a machine. Where are the romantic days of grapepickers from all over the world who stayed a few weeks at the vineyard?

The island of Corsica is one of the 18 regions of France. It was colonized the Carthaginians, the Greeks, the Etruscans and the Romans. After the Roman empire collapsed, Corsica got invaded by the Vandals and the Ostrogoths. For a short while the island belonged to the Byzantine Empire, then the Franks granted the island to the Pope, in the early 11th century Pisa and Genoa together freed the island from the threat of Arab invasion. The island came under the influence of the Republic of Pisa, later it belonged to Genua for centuries. In 1755 after a long fight for independence from Genoa the independent Corsican Republic was proclaimed, but in 1769, when the island was conquered by France. As the areas near the coast over centuries have been threatened by attacks and raids of pirates many old hamlets and dwellings are wide inland, high in the mountains. So most of the old churches are in the mountains and some of them are hard to find.
The small eye catching Romanesque church San Michele is easy to find, located on an isolated hill just outside Murato.
It was erected from mid-12th century on and was consecrated in 1280. At that time Corsica was ruled by Pisa and so it was built in a bicolor typical Pisan style recognizable by the alternation of green (serpentine) and white (limestone) stones, very similar to the "Basilica di Saccargia" on the neighbouring island of Sardinia.
The single nave church presents remarkable naive motifs on the walls that are amazing in their imagination and variety.
The grape picker (see prev. upl.) - blessed and proud.
Part of a very large mosaic on display at the museum in El Jemm. The woman appears to be wearing nothing but a snake!

A statue honoring grape pickers in the town of Puligny-Montrachet, France. The Montrachet vineyards, that lends its name to the town of Puligny-Montrachet and nearby Chassagne-Montrachet, produce some of the best white wines in France. The small villages, dedicated to growing grapes and producing wine, attest to the importance of the industry, tradition, and culture of wine in the Burgundy region.
Montrachet is one of the most famous vineyards in the world. So famous that the towns of Puligny and Chassagne have appended their names to it. The vineyards are located on a hill between the two villages. The hill is called "Scabby Hill" ("Mont Rachaz").

We were lucky enough to see the grapes being gathered while we were on holiday in Tuscany recently. We were also lucky enough to drink some of the marvellous local wine. Cheers!
