Peter and I went to Tate Modern yesterday and saw the photographic exhibition Shape of Light and the just opened Anni Albers exhibition. Then we went to Victoria and had a meal at Sourced before setting off to Clapham Junction and to 42 Webbs Road to see Grant's pictures. And, if you've enjoyed Grant's pictures on screen, they are just wonderful in print. Magical, joyous and intriguing. The evening was oddly sultry - uncommonly warm for mid October and the gallery crowded - and it was great to meet Grant, at last.

American Gothic is a painting by Grant Wood in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Wood's inspiration came from what is now known as the American Gothic House, and his decision to paint the house along with "the kind of people I fancied should live in that house." Created in 1930, it depicts a farmer standing beside a woman that has been interpreted to be either his wife or his daughter. The figures were modeled by Wood's sister, Nan Wood Graham, and Wood and Graham's dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby.

The neon sign of Grants Cafe in Grants, New Mexico.

Taken with an iPhone 4. Textured with ScratchCam. I masked out the texture from the sign itself by layering the untextured and textured images in Iris Photo Suite and masking the sign. Then I did a little toning in Iris. That's all!

A lot of lightning, all behind clouds but it made for some amazing cloud shots.

Benson House Circa 1916 - built by the Benson Brothers - Atley and Aldolf, who married the Christensen sisters, both pioneer families of Grant. FL. The family lived in the house until moving to Melbourne in 1928. The brothers were involved in commercial fishing, grew pineapples and operated a general store. Atley died in 1961. His wife, Clara, continued to live in the house and moved to Tampa where she died in 1981. The 'cracker house' was donated to the Grant Historical Society in 1984 and became a museum in 1987

Pacific Black Ducks and ducklings are a common sight on the River Torrens and the Lochiel Park Wetland and represent the importance of water for supporting life.

River Red Gums are shown as they are an important element of the local habitat and Kaurna culture.

The Southern Purple-spotted Gudgeon is included in the design as this is a critically endangered fish and is symbolic of the fight to preserve our environment.

A Purple Swamphen is shown as it is another local species that is dependent upon the wetland.

The blue background represents water and the circles represent light reflecting on the surface and bubbles underwater.

Grant is very helpful.

(Normally I am against printed sheets, but had to make an exception for blueberry percale, perfectly charming for summertime use.)

He made a name for himself as the leader of the band Grant Lee Buffalo beginning in the early 90's. They put out 4 high-quality, and very different albums, and Phillips was named "male vocalist of the year" by Rolling Stone in 1994. But they never got the wider recognition they deserved, mostly because of a serious lack of promotion by their label. Phillips went solo in 1999, and a year later received a call from the producers of the hit TV show Gilmore Girls. Fans of his work, they created the recurring character of the town troubadour for him, and Phillips gained access to a completely new (and large) audience. Since then he's continued to hone his craft and release music featuring his golden, honey-soaked voice and songs that spin tales of family, history, and place. His latest release is The Narrows.

The Shields Daily Gazette for 15 February 1904 reports:

"PUBLIC HOUSE THEFT

Two fisherman named John Grant (31) of North Shields and John Gillan (44) of North Berwick, went into the Newcastle Arms, Union Quay, North Shields on Friday morning at half-past six. There was a glass of money standing on the counter, which one of the assistants ought to have taken upstairs the previous night but forgot to do so. When they left the bar they took the glass and the money, £1 18s 6d, with them. PC Spindler apprehended them at the Fish Quay. Neither of them denied the charge, and both were fined 10s and costs".

Grant Palmer's Dennis Dragon / Duple Metsec M683 TDB is the first of the Dragons to have been given fleet names and is seen here parked in River Street, Bedford on 17th May 2011 displaying it's new vinyls, having just arrived in the town on a Bedford College contract.

"Respect the chickens, Grant."

Of course, even Grant can tolerate so much.

The third of Grant Palmer's Dennis Dragon / Duple Metsec vehicles is M685 TDB which is seen here on delivery at a transport cafe near the A1 at Stibbington, between Stamford and Peterborough. The vehicle, like the other two Dragons acquired had been fitted with seatbelts at North Hykeham near Lincoln. The vehicles have been acquired for enlarged school contracts for several Central Bedfordshire schools. New to Stagecoach's Kenyan operations in 1996, the vehicles served with Stagecoach in Manchester between 1998 and 2010. M685 TDB will be the third '685' to have served in Grant Palmer's fleet, the first being ex-Centrewest Mercedes 811 F685 XMS and the second being ex-Lothian Leyland Olympian OFS 685Y, both vehicles having now been scrapped.

I am now going back in my archives to my trip to Kenya in January of 2015. I have quite a few of them left to upload. The first image show a grant’s gazelle.

The Grant's gazelle (Nanger granti) is a species of gazelle distributed from northern Tanzania to South Sudan and Ethiopia, and from the Kenyan coast to Lake Victoria. Its Swahili name is Swala Granti.
