This is a Grandstream BT101 VoIP (Internet) telephone - looks like an ordinary handset, but plugs into an Ethernet port (in our case, on our router) instead of a normal phone socket. We use it for calls to South Korea, as it works out much cheaper than the regular phone (even though we call landlines and mobiles in Korea).

Update (Dec 2007): At the time of this photo, the Grandstream was the only item on the LAN which connected directly to the router via Ethernet. Everything else went through the wireless, until I installed a HomePlug setup near the end of 2007. There is now an Ethernet switch located next to the router, which connects up the router, the Grandstream and the HomePlug adapter.

So everything's back in a tangle again under the desk, but I got rid of quite a few wires and cables I didn't need. Obviously the cabling going into the switch is still a mess, and I have no idea what to do about that.
Still, I got my Grandstream GXV3140 working again today, and as always it looks nice on my desk.
Also, I almost went with four monitors (which would include an open laptop) but I ended up not having enough power plugs. It would have been another Samsung monitor like the one already there.
I need a bigger desk.
I don't particularly like this picture and I may end up taking it off. Oh well.
This is the story of a weird conversation today with a couple of Year 8 girls. They were on a student reception desk and said they were having trouble with the phone.
It's not unknown for these VOIP handsets to crash sometimes, so I thought it was be easy to resolve. I went to check it out to find the phone was working just fine.
The problem, it transpired, was that the kids didn't know what buttons to press when it started ringing. I explained that you didn't press any buttons - you just picked it up and started talking. Then they asked what you pressed when you were finished. I explained that you just put it down. They were blown away.
The kids had never used a phone with a handset. :|
What this tells me is that there are actually some kids out there who didn't have a Fisher Price pull along rotary dial telephone. That is a serious tragedy.
Maybe next time we can discuss the fact that none of the kids seems to know that if you press the shift key and a letter key you get a capital letter. That's a whole other story...

Today was, blessedly, a bit better in work.
Sadly we didn't get out for a walk, because at lunchtime the catering system went belly up. That means a support call to the supplier. And our call was valuable to them. I know this because they told us. Over and over again. For two and a half hours.
Yes, you thought calling Sky was bid, but today they were knocked into the proverbial cocked hat. Needless to say, this was not a free call!
In fairness, lots of problems with catering at the start of a new term only manifest when you get kids in so it's their busiest time of year by a mile. You're normally in a queue of two or three people, not 43.
Once answered, the actual call was probably less than five minutes. All in a day's work. :/

OK, so this isn't what an android phone normally looks like, but it is a phone and it is running android!
Really busy day today and I photographed next to nothing, so it's a grab shot.
In this case it's a Grandstream VOIP phone sitting on my desk that I powered up to take a shot.
The house still runs on a creaky Panasonic analogue switchboard that will probably never die. :)
This is my Type 90 Monophone (made by Automatic Electric, ca. 1967), hooked up to a Grandstream HandyTone-286, which is then wired up to the great internets. With this, I can telephone into the modern age from the 1960s. It works, although unfortunately the bell doesn't ring (probably a voltage or current problem) and the pulse dialing isn't recognized by the HandyTone.
